It really is one of the most amazing songs in the world when you think about it.

about time. the b-side version is even better.

the "album in eight minutes and eight seconds" megamix? yes.

we've done this already, though, haven't we? oddly, i can't find it ... there's this thread where i witter about them a bit, but i'm sure i remember banging on at length with Dr C about that version. bah.

i don't think this was it either, but it's close enough.

Is the "megamix" actually the album in 8 mins though? I've listened to "From the Hip" quite a bit and never noticed any elements of the album tracks on the single.

the one i'm thinking of -- i don't have the original 12" but it's on all the LTM repressings as megamix and lasts (amusingly) 8'08" -- certainly does, yes: it's a while since i've listened but there are cut-ups and maybe even beats in there too. i don't think every track is represented, mind, so i suppose "album in eight minutes" is exaggerating slightly.

if you look at the lyrics bit on their slightly shonky but quite lovable website it says:

LOOKING FROM A HILLTOP (MEGAMIX)

Strictly speaking there are no lyrics as such. The voices and sounds of voices are lifted from all the other songs on From the hip.

which is nearly as good as the entry for "je veux ton amour", which says:

CHRIST MICHEL!!IF YOU THINK I CAN WRITE THIS OUT. . . . . IT'S NOT A DIRECT
TRANSLATION OF THE ENGLISH NOTHING'S EASY IS IT? I CAN'T TELL WHAT THE
FRENCH ENDINGS ARE. I'LL HAVE TO LEAVE THIS ONE FOR YOURSELF BUT IF YOU
DO GET IRREVOCABLY STUCK CALL ME AND I'LL HELP. . . OK. . . . LARRY. . . . . . . . . .

Listening to it again now - I've got the LTM reissue too. I think this proves that I'm not as familiar with the album as I thought and only repeatedly listen to the "looking from a Hilltop" tracks and "Program for Light"

But yes, the Restructure and Megamix versions are brilliant. I even like the Bis cover version.

the whole album really is incredible. it's not perfect -- in fact, it's a long bloody way from it -- but it's so absurdly ambitious and confident that the occasional thin-ness of the production and the fact some of the songs sound a little, er, unfinished actually ends up adding to the overall effect.

"inspiration" in particular is just glorious.

ha, the bis cover! i've not heard that in a while. i did like it a lot, though.

six years pass...

Too right it's incredible!
