iPhone generative music apps

tons of talk on music apps strewn through this thread: iPhone apps S/D -- but this is to focus on the impact of the music apps

I've been having fun watching descriptions of the drum machine & sequencer apps available, but they just seem like stripped down versions of long available programs -- my initial reaction was that I'd much rather have the full feature set than a portable toy. But seeing Brian Eno's Bloom and RJDJ within a day of each other is making me realize this is more of a game changer than I thought: I've heard generative music apps before, but not until today have I had one on a portable device I could leave lying around -- it's one thing to leave something running on your desktop while sitting at a desk, and another to have it in a small device you can take with you anywhere. one is still bound up in formal experience, and the latter actually has the option of being your soundtrack to quietly making breakfast in a cabin on the Lost Coast.

the sequencing apps are fun, but less revolutionary than the two people next to you in a bar suddenly starting to use RJDJ. & when Bloom slowly returns to a melody you had running three hours ago, I realized I was actually relating to this in completely different way than I do with pre-recorded music.

These would be really really really useful while on an airplane at a low volume when you're tired as fuck.

I use Bloom, iR-909, and SrutiBox almost all the time now when I'm practicing. The instantaneousness is a huge plus.

BBC Radiophonic Workshop on iPhone: http://www.jasuto.com/site/

I've been mucking about with it for a hour and it's singularly brilliant (and a fucking steal at $0.99)

I can't remember but did I read something about the Nintendo DS Korg cartridge DS-10 coming to the iPhone? Maybe I'm making it up, but that thing is amazing.

My favorite electronic music app is this little guy, who never fails to crack me up:

It's not generative but cue.play.DJ is pretty incredible. Like you could legit probably do an entire set with your iPhone/iPod

Also soundgrid is great but I'm sorta sick of all the sounds that come with it and I've already downloaded all the other packs

I've become moderately obsessed with Eno's Bloom and Trope (Air is good as well). I'm particularly into the fact that it's still "Eno's" music -- but that you have some control over its content.

At first they need to figure out how to make the wakeup calls work. Start with the basics, Jobs!

FYI, Propellerhead ReBirth (which is two TB-303's, a TR-808, and a TR-909 all in one) just dropped from $5.99 to $3.99. Fucking steal, IMO. Like, who the fuck doesn't want an 808 on their iPhone?

Falling Stars is far more fun than any free app promoting a chewing gum deserves to be.

Generative music app I made w/about 30 different artfuckers here in ATX:

http://itunes.com/apps/churchofthefriendlyghost

This was a custom job for the annual NMASS festival --

I need to get a how-to video up but basically: each lil circle is an audio loop, you can touch & tilt to remix or if you send the app to the background it plays back generatively...

onlydarkness.com, Thursday, 28 August 2014 19:35 (nine years ago) link

Speak of the devil, they just updated Animoog with Audiobus support this morning! First update in like 2 or 3 years!
