That video makes me dizzy (in a bad way). The album makes me dizzy in a good way, though.

this album is great !if you love 80s pop and cheezy synths, of course.
― AleXTC, Monday, 3 November 2008 10:46 (fifteen years ago) link
one of the best albums of the year for me. she certainly has enough tunes in her. 1st track reminds me of garbage (the band) unfortunately and there are obvious references / ripoffs of 80s songs but she manages to make it all quite refreshing. there a certain NZ style chorus thing (islander influences maybe) which makes some of them hang in your head forever (like that old dave dobson track).

garbage (the band)
― Niles Caulder, Monday, 3 November 2008 20:09 (fifteen years ago) link
I like the album but it really feels like a 3rd generation copy. 1/3rd Zoot Woman, 1/3rd Phoenix and 1/3rd Ladytron.
― Siegbran, Monday, 3 November 2008 20:32 (fifteen years ago) link
Also about 10 years too late
― Niles Caulder, Monday, 3 November 2008 20:42 (fifteen years ago) link
?? all 3 of those bands are still putting out albums
― winston, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 04:54 (fifteen years ago) link
this album would never have come out 10 years ago. This thing is really just one of the first forrays in 1986 retro-fetishism
― baaderonixx, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 08:40 (fifteen years ago) link
I'm hearing Pat Benatar and Flash Dance
yeah, I can't see this released in 98 at all...some of the melodies/harmonies are amazing and indeed, struck me immediately.no idea if there's a NZ style there, though. it's an interesting idea !
― AleXTC, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 11:14 (fifteen years ago) link

I was in Selfridges with my son last week and a track came on that made my ears prick up. I asked him if he knew what it was but he didn't. It turns out it's the 'Paris is Burning' track embedded above. The verse melody is lifted from Gary Numan's 'Cars', while the chorus has a bit of an uplifting New Order feeling to it. That's what it sounds like to me - I can't hear the Pat Benatar or Flashdance thing at all. For one thing it's not polished enough for that. In fact that's where it falls down for me. I like it but the vocals sound too rough, strained and amateurish. I'd prefer it if it was less indie/home-made sounding and more of a proper, big production. Plus points, though, for the bass guitar, glistening keyboards on the outro, and the layers of different drums.
― dubmill, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 22:08 (fifteen years ago) link
i think it's the combination of the 80s polish + the home made sound that makes it sound so good.
― nonightsweats, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 07:00 (fifteen years ago) link
The Benatar thing is probably more relevant for some of teh rockier tracks on the album.
― baaderonixx, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 08:42 (fifteen years ago) link
and the production on "paris is burning" isn't the best on the album. actually, the single was released last year. it was the track that got me interested at first but it's not even in my top 3 of the album, now.and it keeps growing. I wasn't too fond of the last tracks at first but now it's almost my favorite part. the 2 openers are still meh but as things go, i might love the entire album by the end of the week !
― AleXTC, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 12:16 (fifteen years ago) link
Another vote for 'Shitehawke more like'. I really don't need yet another record like this in my life, there are a couple of nice touches but the whole aesthetic was getting tired two years ago.
The production doesn't help - it seems to dull everything to the point that everyone involved sounds bored, and the songs, voice and ideas aren't strong enough to rise above it.
Paris Is Burning is good though.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 6 November 2008 11:22 (fifteen years ago) link
Hm just hearing this, and I find the constant talk of 80s a bit misleading... first thoughts are more "90s idea of the 80s" than the original thing. Prob because of how production is sewn together, synths did sound this way, but drums + vocal never did, or something.
Has a way with choruses anyway!

this isn't bad, or isn't as bad as i thought it would be. though i've yet to get any reason for its existence beyond her love for stevie nicks, and...it kinda makes me just want to listen to the real stevie nicks
― lex pretend, Saturday, 7 February 2009 00:09 (fifteen years ago) link
wrong - I saw her live this week and it was surprisingly enjoyable. Somehow this sounds like my idea of Pat Benatar (who I've never consciously heard)
― baaderonixx, Saturday, 7 February 2009 09:26 (fifteen years ago) link
More Laura Branigan than Benetar I think. I can hear Ladyhawke covering Self Control with ease (she more or less did with Dusk Till Dawn).

xpostGood lord, how have I never made the Jem connection? She's working on a new album and it's rumoured to be leaning towards a hip-hop sound...

six months since last tour and you think she's quit, not that she might be recording a second solo?

She was one of the worst live performers I have ever seen. No natural charisma whatsoever.

a hip hop sound, really? has she spoken of this in interviews? i caught her UK tour 2 or 3 years ago and yep, she wasn't very good onstage then either. when did you see her, boxedjoy?
― NI, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 10:09 (thirteen years ago) link
weren't there stories of her really suffering badly from stage fright ?
suspect that would account for her lack of presence, and unimpressive shows.
― mark e, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 10:55 (thirteen years ago) link
I saw her on US tv last year and, despite liking the album quite a bit, I found her live performance just left of terrible.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 10:57 (thirteen years ago) link
she caught a Craig Nicholls diagnosis on the road
― Teddybears.SHTML (sic), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 11:01 (thirteen years ago) link
I think the whole charisma/stage-fright thing must certainly be down to her alleged Aspergers Syndrome.

I just went to my local record store to buy either the new Ladyhawke or the Kristin Kontrol album. They didn't have either so I bought the Tegan & Sara album instead. I have a feeling I might end up regretting that.

yeah, the press release implies things were not good re the time of the second album, hence the whole folk singer blues groove, whereas this is back to the synths, and happy grooves.

Newest album hasn't been reviewed too favourably (57 on metacritic), but I'm finding it a more-than-passable 2016 Sky Ferreira substitute
