A host of artists have been selected to pay tribute to the cutting-edge craftings of Krautrock legends NEU! on a new compilation.

As well as those you might expect to turn up, such as Foals, Fujiya & Miyagi and Primal Scream, Kasabian and Oasis will be featured on the record, which will be called Brand NEU!

Said Bobby Gillespie of the compilation, “I hope that this album turns more people onto the music of NEU!” Noel Gallagher added, “My current new favourite German band of all time. Proper tour bus music. Spiritual!!” Michael Rother also contributes a track.

So, pick your favourite, your least favourite, your one you dread or hope for, whatever...

I don't know that SVIIB track, but I know that Benjamin is the biggest Michael Rother fanboy in the world, so I've got high hopes for it.

I think they only did the Noel thing for controversy and WTF?!?! purposes.

I think none of these are covers. Don't know a lot of these but my guess is that they're all songs with a motorik(ish) beat. That Rother track also featured on an earlier tribute cd. Never heard of that La Düsseldorf track and I thought I had everything (well, up to '81 or so, maybe this is from a later incarnation). The whole thing looks/feels pretty random to me. A shame, really.

What label is this on? None of the reports say, and there's no Amazon listing for it.

On the Neu! thread at least one person reckoned this was a hoax.

"Super Inuit" and "Wataridori" are my favourites of the tracks I know. Luckily I have them and half of the others already.

The thought of some Oasis or Kasabian completist buying this and hearing it open w/ Ciccone Youth was pretty amusing, but I see their tracks aren't exclusives either, so no draw. So I'll just have to be amused at the idea of Bobby G (is it his comp or is he just on it?) making himself this as a winamp playlist while stoned and then thinking how it would be super awesome to, like, actually license it all, man.

pretty sure it's a wind up

vain_bowers, Friday, 27 February 2009 13:07 (fifteen years ago) link

I just found this School of Seven Bells interview which suggests it's not:

As far as music goes, we're finishing up a song for a comp that Michael Rother and Gronland Records are putting together of music in the spirit of Neu! called Brand Neu! We're giving them a new track for that.

braveclub, Friday, 27 February 2009 13:47 (fifteen years ago) link

It's a good title. Not cover versions, but bands that would like to be compared to or have been influenced by.

Mark G, Friday, 27 February 2009 13:52 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't really see why anyone would think it's a windup based on the people involved - I didn't personally know N Gallagher liked Neu! but, like, they're not exactly lost to a bygone age, nor massively challenging to listen to

That Foals track was a b-side and it's kinda terrible and not a bit Neu!-sy to my ears.

Frank Sumatra (NickB), Friday, 27 February 2009 14:00 (fifteen years ago) link

Also wtf is Hook & The Twin?

ZANE LOOOOOOOWE.....
...played Race For The Bone! Last night! The king of motormouth DJs called for texts at the end of the song and the reaction was beautifully split between one hater and a bunch of lovers - one bigged it up as "a mix between Hot Chip, Cypress Hill and the background music from a Bruce Lee film, remixed by The Prodigy". Which is exactly right.

^^^great things promised by their own Myspace blog here

Luka ModReq (DJ Mencap), Friday, 27 February 2009 14:05 (fifteen years ago) link

From that description, I can see that they'd be the natural choice for a tribute to Neu!.

DONKEY CANCER in action (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 27 February 2009 15:21 (fifteen years ago) link

I did a piece with Michael Rother a few years ago where I sent him a CD of obviously Neu!-influenced songs and asked him to comment. A while later, the label asked me to suggest some tunes for a tribute album but it fell apart when Klaus Dinger vetoed it and I never heard from them again. Primal Scream and Fujiya & Miyagi (but not that tune) overlap with my list. The rest, including Stereolab, Secret Machines and OMD, didn't make it for whatever reason.

Anyway, what I wonder is how long they waited until after Dinger's death before reviving the project.

If someone seriously tries to make a tribute release worse or more pointless than anything Cleopatra Records has made, I will personally send them a Tiara Of Lol
