i'm really torn. i've listened to one of his mixes and it was pretty special. but his album kinda bored me.

I want to like him, but ditto on being bored by his album.

I like some of the indiviual components of his tracks, and even the overall feel of some, but yeah ditto.

los angeles was one of my favorite albums from last year and i think that essential mix is ace, too. i had no idea it got voted as the best.

i like this guy's music because it is unsettled/free and joyous (not in some kind of religious way; it sounds like he's having a great time), but it also sounds totally laser-focused.

Finally, and this can both help or hinder my efforts of persuasion here, but I recently had a nice little streak of using acid once a month for the last 3 months. Every time I just put on a ton of Flying Lotus and it really, really delivered.

1983 kind of sounds like bad downtempo Mr. Oizo. His style wasn't refined enough by that point.

LA x 3 EP > Los Angeles. Floating on massive bass-driven clouds over gray and turbulent shipping lanes. "Endless White" sounds like Marsen Jules circa "Lazy Sunday Funerals", except better.

i'd been avoiding this dude for some reason, and i haven't heard a whole record (just some random youtube shit and a couple of cuts from the upcoming album), but i'm sold now. seems like he's good at both the post-dilla drum programming thing and the nu-synth thing. his remix of 'reckoner' is great too.

those couple tracks he's done with daedelus' wife are great

but yeah dude's really solid

He mimes his live shows. It's pretty ridiculous. All premixed and he just works the filters and delays, then poses like jesus. I thought the Chemical Bros. and Oakenfold were the bottom of the miming and posing possee but FlyLo is right up there with the worst of them. Either make your entire set live on stage or don't pose when you twist the delay nob.

i think there is an ongoing snobbery - more in the uk than the us i would say - against jazz fusion that i think is unmerited. im suspicious of people who think its all just 'wanky' or 'noodly'. its like something q magazine readers would say.

also, youre dead is only really about 50% jazz

his transcendental stuff like on cosmogramma i think is all superficial and just window dressing but the stuff on youre dead is really good, if not exactly original, but the originality comes in the editing, not the performance itself

dont think im going to pay to see this guy live again - three times he's been billed as having a 'full live band', and unless hes really into hiding musicians where no one can see, all he comes with is a laptop. which is fine if you want to hear an ableton set with some occasionally memorable visuals but i didnt pay £35 for a glorified dj set. he is also a pretty boring rapper, if he isnt changing the pitch of his voice. i did like his specs however.

is his dj style still a bunch of stuff kinda mashed together? I haven't been amazed by the mixes I've heard from a few years back.

basically, yeah. all pretty much pitched at a 'party vibe!' level. so none of the jazzier tracks, no real sense of ebb and flow (i know asking for a journey/narrative from mixes is corny, but when done well, its great), which is what i would expect after the latest album. it was just one big smashed together club set (with some dj rashad tracks here and there) where everything seemed to blur into one mush. kode 9s DJ set before the show had some cool tracks, but i dont know if it was him, or his equipment, but he made some serious clunkers (dizzee's sittin her being mixed into footwork sounded terrible).

Found it surprising that this didn't make the top 77 of 2014. Yeah, it doesn't really maintain the breakneck fusion pace of the first couple of tracks but there are still plenty of ideas in the latter half.

When people I trust recommend things to me, including critics I follow writing positive reviews, and those things disappoint me, I end up disliking those things in a way that is different in both category and degree from the way I dislike, say, mediocre club music, or any other by-the-numbers shit you care to name. Hate is too strong a word. But it certainly factors in the disappointment with the person(s) who recommended the thing, and then bundles that with the thing itself, plus the money I no longer have because I spent it on the thing that was recommended. Anyway, that's probably normal and not at all interesting so thanks for reading!

I've paid no attention to him but liked his albums well enough. He opened for solange the other night with 3d projections and those, in conjunction with the contact high I got from everyone around me smoking, gave me a fairly credible LSD flashback experience so that was neat.

I'm honestly not familiar enough with all of his stuff to say. He did about 35-40 minutes (it was an opening slot after all) and the 3d animations were really impressive, great graphics.

he projected the video behind himself when he "played" it. the projections were really crisp and the 3d was very impressive

i was disappointed though that overall the 3d animations didn't really have any theme or narrative. as my friend put it, it was a bit ... windows screensaver-y

definitely felt like they were just throwing up whatever 3d animations they had come up with. some of it had an outer space theme, some of it was body horror, some of it was like random 90s cyberdelic stuff, some of it related to his old albums. just a grab bag of random shit.

but yeah, taken piece by piece it was impressive

Listening now, so far it seems well within his comfort zone, a lot of familiar off kilter beats and bass riffing, a bit less abrasive than some of his previous work. Very listenable, but not exactly revolutionary.

Haven't listened to the new one yet, but none of the singles got me going (except for Lynch), and I really liked You're Dead!. Honestly I'd like to hear a Thundercat-less FL record again. It's kinda cool how their sounds have become inseparable, but I wonder what he would do on some track without the 'just add Thundercat' plugin.

I always like his Twitter commentaries on the tracks. Love that 'All Spies' is straight-up the music from the Spy vs Spy NES game.

Re-listening to jonwayne's debut 'Bowser' and it holds up, such well-written tracks and rich video game synths. Better than all the retro-sounding indie game soundtracks around today. Probably my favorite non-FlyLo record to come out of the Low End Theory scene (along with Bad Vibes, and the first Teebs album).
