So you voted for Beyond The Wheel? Think I'll go for Circle Of Power then. I assume some others will vote Flower (or it will end up with 0 as everyone thinks the same)

heh... I haven't voted yet... but come awn...

butt-rock miyagi (rogermexico.), Monday, 13 April 2009 17:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Went with "Flower." First song of theirs I ever heard (I bought this album because the cover was great - I had never heard of them before) and it made me a fan.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 13 April 2009 18:02 (fifteen years ago) link

beyond the wheel is indeed crushingly great, but my heart belongs to flower.

m the g, Monday, 13 April 2009 18:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Another vote for Flower here, although Nazi Driver and Head Injury are pretty good too. I recently revisited this one after a few years left on the shelf, and it still sounds quite fresh.

This album was also my gateway to SST; if it wasn't for the lil' paper catalogue inside I might never have discovered the Minutemen, the Meat Puppets, Husker Du et al.

I was going to do screaming life/fopp, but it may just be the two of us in there ;_;

butt-rock miyagi (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 15 April 2009 19:12 (fifteen years ago) link

Do it! Polls generally do make double figures in voting, there's far more lurkers who vote than post on every poll.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 15 April 2009 19:15 (fifteen years ago) link

I have Ultramega OK on vinyl (and screaming life too) everything else on cd. I'd love that ultramega ok on red vinyl that Kreation records are selling but you can bet they want several hundred dollars for it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 15 April 2009 19:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Know what would be great? if soundgarden reformed and didn't give a fuck about selling millions of a record and just expanded on the ultramega ok template like badmotorfinger did and just make a really good heavy doom album with some weird shit. I'm sure they're capable as long as they let Kim/Matt take control and tell cornell to fucking sing!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 15 April 2009 19:18 (fifteen years ago) link

oh and Ben too.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 15 April 2009 19:19 (fifteen years ago) link

What's Kim doing these days anyway? Last thing I heard by him was his guesting on a Sunn o))) album.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 15 April 2009 19:20 (fifteen years ago) link

i'd love to think they could still cut a killer record, but who knows? i know I'd be happy if they went with ultremegadoomsludge or dotu classicrockadelia or anything in between.

i really just <3 the fuck out of what these these guys did together.

(so much so that I'm paying money to go see cornell's current solo nostalgia act)

butt-rock miyagi (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 15 April 2009 19:25 (fifteen years ago) link

i really hated what i heard of Cornells pop single. Do what you do best Chris!

http://www.sludgeswamp.blogspot.com/ has a 1988 bootleg up!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 15 April 2009 21:58 (fifteen years ago) link

He writes:

"I can't find my original disk that I got this from but the quality is not bad. This is a rip at 320 from a burned copy of the disk.
It's a bootleg show from '88, I think. Sorry, no art on this one. But it's a nice one to have because of the time period. It's when Hiro was still in the band and there's a lot of Ultramega OK material on the set list. Even "Circle Of Power" with Hiro on vocals. I was gonna say signing but that wasn't exactly what he was doing..."

disk 1

1 Hunted Down

2 All Your Lies

3 Mood For Trouble

4 Gun

5 Thank You

6 Flower

disk 2

7 Awake

8 Kingdom Of Come

9 Head Injury

10 Circle Of Power

11 Incessant Mace

12 Earache My Eye

Yeah Soundgarden were a really different band with Hiro, at least to my ears. Anyone else here like his next band Truly? I still play their first album occasionally, it's like psych-pop filtered through a heavy-as-fuck machine.

MacDara, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 23:51 (fifteen years ago) link

I never got round to Truly but i remember Kerrang liking them. I think the Roadburn festival wanted Truly to play.

Love love love this record. Voting All Your Lies.

Hadrian VIII, Thursday, 16 April 2009 18:02 (fifteen years ago) link

This poll should include "Toy Box" too, for the heck of it.

Probably vote "Incessant Mace", tempted to vote "Mood For Trouble". Was that the only appearance of an acoustic guitar on a Soundgarden track (even if only for about 10 seconds?) I love the spacey parts led into by Cornell's big wail, the tempo slows and the thick, ringing arpeggios. I got to see them do "Incessant Mace" once, when my buddy Miguel and I road-tripped from eastern Michigan to Chicago to see that leg of the 1990 Danzig/Soundgarden/Corrosion of Conformity tour at the Riveria. They encored with it. When we saw 'em a week later in Detroit, they didn't play it. rest of the set list was the same.

Love this album, it was basically my gateway into indie/underground music. As a kid, i was a total Led Zep geek and would buy any album that drew comparisons to Zep. I remember at some point in '88 or '89 reading a Rolling Stone that had a "college band roundup" or some shit. pictures of "new bands" with little one paragraph blurbs. Soundarden was in there and the writer dropped the magic words, so I scoured the record stores and turned up a used cassette of 'Ultramega OK' at Wazoo's in Ann Arbor. as soon as "Flower" came over the speakers I knew I had a new favorite band. I used to smoke pot and listen to this in my truck every day after school obsessively. started buying everything else on SST and Sub Pop.

That setlist for that boot looks amazing -- can't wait to download it. One of my biggest regrets in life is that I never got see the band with Hiro. They had Everman on bass the first three or four times I saw 'em.

Why did hiro leave?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 16 April 2009 18:33 (fifteen years ago) link

I think he wanted to go back to school. To become a physicist or something of that nature.

Plunge Protection Team, Thursday, 16 April 2009 18:47 (fifteen years ago) link

'Truly' worth checking out?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 16 April 2009 18:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I bought the first EP when it came but I remember being disappointed. Band also had Mark Pickerel from the Trees on drums, right? I only listened to it a couple times and can't remember a thing about it. Maybe I should try to find it again! (been re-listening to a lot of stuff from this era so who knows)

Plunge Protection Team, Thursday, 16 April 2009 19:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Fast Stories... From Kid Coma was the album wasn't it? I remember it got 5 K's in Kerrang and I think made their albums of the year but I never heard it.

This album was also my gateway to SST; if it wasn't for the lil' paper catalogue inside I might never have discovered the Minutemen, the Meat Puppets, Husker Du et al.

yeah SST catalog inserts in all their CDs were mindblowing for me at a young'n as well

brewer and what (some dude), Thursday, 16 April 2009 19:19 (fifteen years ago) link

I was lucky, when I got into Nirvana/grunge in 1991 I quickly got into Screaming Trees,Husker Du, Black Flag, Soundgarden, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr etc via Missing Records in Glasgow. It was a brilliant shop back then, they stocked all the SST stuff. What they didn't have/were sold out of I could find in Tower Records round the corner. Magical times for a young pfunkboy!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 16 April 2009 19:25 (fifteen years ago) link

actually the very FIRST thing I ever bought on SST might have been the Sonic Youth "Master=Dik" 12", when that came out. I had heard it on a college radio station. I assumed that's what they always sounded like!

and yeah, the catalog that came with it was fascinating to someone at that time had heard of maybe two or three of the other bands. a whole new world opened up

Plunge Protection Team, Thursday, 16 April 2009 19:30 (fifteen years ago) link

I got Ultramega OK on vinyl 2nd hand in 92 from Missing Records. I remember getting Louder Than Love and the latest Mudhoney cd (piece of cake)for xmas 92.

Been listening to this for the first time since a car trip in '92. Surprised how 80s sounding it is- particularly the fast ones. "Circle of Power" is like the Hickoids or something. "Head Injury" is all Bad Brains.
