Best guest band/house band appearances on TV shows (especially 'Get Smart')

Can you tell me which bands on TV shows you've loved?

My favourites are the bands that appear on Get Smart. Whether it's at a party/happening or a band that's intended by Kaos to send out a sublimal message that turns everyone evil, they have great 'live' music. So, if anyone knows any interesting trivia about the Get Smart guest/house bands in particular, please tell me.

(1) Kiss on a 1976 Halloween Special hosted by comedian and "secret square" Paul Lynde

(2) Motorhead on "The Young Ones"

(3) the Damned on "The Young Ones"

(4) the Ramones on "Space Ghost Coast to Coast"

i'm still recovering from the apparition of KISS out of dry ice at the world (us) winter olympics closing ceremony this year

the feelies at the prom were the only good thing about "something wild"

andy warhol was great on the 200th anniversary sailing of the original loveboat

the young and the restless had their own fake pop star in plot as love interest as well as terrible hearthrob rock gig filler material

the beach boys should have been banned from any form of tv years ago (even timaru local -- should i mention Snakeskin ?) and the osbournes would be as good as the partridge family if they gave us a song each episode -- hey reality tv

back in the funny old days the Monkees sincerely added Head but you will have to bring us up to speed about Get Smart

on the first series of "A Very Peculiar Practise" English "funny" tv drama a physics student's punk band at the university saw him snapped up by special branch/military -- his band started a riot very efficiently at an alcohol free gig

The Tubes did "Sushi Girl" on SCTV's 'The Fishin' Musician'. The Plasmatics were on 'The Fishin' Musician' as well (and performed. Too many to name from SCTV. HA! John Mellencamp getting the name Cougar because he looked at the back end of a shitty 70s car! Tony Bennett having a stubby with Bob & Doug. Roy Orbison on 'Mel's Rock Pile'. A veritable treasure trove.

someone showed me a tape of the seeds playing on some sitcom from the 60s, i dont remember what it was tho.

unknown or illegal user, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

oooh...forgot about the Plasmatics on SCTV. They were also on Solid Gold playing "Black Leather Monster!"

There was a *GREAT* "Love Boat" episode where Sony Bono played an Alice Cooper/Gene Simmons character named "Deacon Dark" who was trying to change him image, but Gopher was a huge fan of his, particularly his hit tune "Step, Step, Step on Toads." I swear I'm not making this up.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 29 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

i second the feelies in "something wild" - it's a great film and a great soundtrack, but i remember even when a teenager and still determined to hate all modern music thinking there was something extraordinary about that band...

also quite fond of the lovin' spoonful in "what's up tigerlily" and the bizarre line up of musical guests in the strange canadian roadmovie "roadkill". not only do we get nash the slash, but we also have a strange bit with one of the ramones and a cuddly toy. i forget which ramone it is but the conceit throughout the film has been lying taxi driver making great claims about his music links. and then when all the protagonists are in a bar one of the ramones pops by for some bizarre reason. very strange film. would love to see that one again...

"Glen Ponda and Chalet" from "Knowing me knowing you with Alan Partridge"

Steve Nieve and the playboys from (I think) "The last resort" had some wonderfully cheesy moments.

The MTV send up on "The day today" with Nirvana doing "Pantie smile" and the gangster rapper "Far Q" while not really relevant to this thread is pretty funny.

man i really want to see my fathers appearence on TV. check out the description from a rock cameo website:
The Hook
TV Show: IRONSIDE
Episode Title: "A Trip To Hashbury"
Songs Performed: "Son Of Fantasy" plus others.
Original Airdate: 03/21/68 (Color)
Syndicated: Yes
Comments: Hook was ex-Leaves Bobby Arlin's band. They appear in two great scenes inside a hippie drug commune. Raymond Burr watches the second song from his ever-present wheelchair in a classic stoic stareā€¦ The Hook's music is featured for almost 10 minutes in this episode.

The Wu-Tang Clan on Larry Sanders. Hank tells them that his favourite is "Shame On A Nigger". A classic TV moment.

Of course, your talkin' about the great episode Get Smart episode with the Groovy Guru and his house band The Sacred Cows. The words to their classic song go "Kill, Kill, Kill Thrill, Thrill, Thrill Make a scene Bump off a Dean Yeah, Yeah, Yeah Knock off a square That's what's it's about Love is Out Hate is in Love is Out"

Of course, who could also forget The Flaming Lips shambolic performance on Beverly Hills 902150

''The Wu-Tang Clan on Larry Sanders. Hank tells them that his favourite is "Shame On A Nigger". A classic TV moment.''

Polaris {Miracle Legion) on "Adventures of Pete and Pete" where younger Pete realizes his favorite song by a band playing in a garage when he's late for school and then he can't find the band the next day. So, he recruits the meter man, Marshall Crenshaw and his math teacher, Syd Straw and his friend Clem to try to recreate the song.

Cibo Matto on Buffy the Vampire Slayer as the Bronze band doing "Sugar Water."

REM on Seasame Street doing some variation on "Shiny Happy People."

Boyce & Hart performing "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight" on the BEWITCHED wherein Serena, Samantha's evil twin, hijacks them to play the Warlock's ball. Great performance, and the sexy "evil twin" gave Elizabeth Mongomery a chance to stretch her boundaries (a little). I've seen it 6 times, all completely accidental (though I never tune away).

The best part of that BEWITCHED episode is Serena singing "If'N" - "If'n if'n 'if'n - yeah yeah yeah!"

I read once a long time ago that the Velvet Underground did a cameo on the Monkees as a motorcycle gang called the Spiders (The old West/ ghost town episode) - But I've never heard about it since, which leads me to beleve that it isn't true... anyone know?

Iggy Pop on the Adventures of Pete & Pete - as Mr. Mecklenburg...

That Flaming Lips on 90210 was utterly classic. We just had a long discussion about it in the tourvan because someone couldn't actually believe that it had really happenned. 90210 was pretty hip, considering. They had Brendan off his face on U4IA dancing around to Tones On Tail at some nightclub in another episode. How cool is that?

However, we've joked about bands appearing on The Muppets so many times that I've actually come to believe that it happened. Please someone reassure me that Bauhaus NEVER appeared on Sesame Street, miming "Spirit" to the accompaniment of little fluffy bats and the Count because we've joked about it so much I'm CONVINCED that it happenned.

The Munsters: The Munsters agree to rent out their house to touring rock group The Standells. When they return, they find a way-out beatnik party in progress, but Herman soon gets in the spirit and tries out some impromptu beat poetry (The Standells, in a pre-"Dirty Water" phase, perform "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" and "Do The Ringo").

The Mothers-In-Law: In a special episode of this somewhat-forgotten series about the trials of two pairs of middle-agers coping with their married offspring, the older set have a go at managing wild primitive rockers Sky Saxon and The Seeds! This amazing show was directed by Desi Arnaz, and also features Joe Besser of The Three Stooges (what a meeting of the minds!).

The Flintstones: In "Shinrock-a-Go-Go," then-popular rock showcase Shindig and its host Jimmy O'Neill are caricatured, as are San Francisco's genius folk-rock/beat group The Beau Brummels. Fred inadvertently invents a new dance craze, "The Flintstone Flop," as "The Beau Brummelstones" play their hit "Laugh Laugh."

Plus much more, including The Andy Griffith Show (Opie's garage band play their first gig at a teen party), and Love American Style (with segments featuring both Davy Jones and Sonny & Cher).

The appearance of Phil Spector and Monkees songwriters Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart in 'I Dream of Jeannie'. Spector is pretty funny in 'Easy Rider' too, and for some strange reason Boyce & Hart also turned up in an episode of Bewitched.

And Bob Dylan in 'Dharma and Greg'!

Does anybody (wish they could not) remember a TV comedy called "Throb", set in the offices of a record label? (The throb record label had a logo of a heart so stop that!)..

One episode had a 'punk' theme, where the three band members were all sulky and snotty and not nice, but when it came to the gig, one of the band members was all nice and rocky and the other two all rubbish. Clearly the two were actors and the rocky one was a bona fide star guest.

At the end the record label guy was all "yeah, I guess the kids go for it, I'm more a CSN&Y guy myself"

( I think Sammy Hagar was involved somehow)

(Like I don't actually know it was him, like)
