The least Genesis-sounding of all Genesis albums, and one of my least favourite albums by them. But I know it has its fans among non-Genesis fans on ILM, and it's next out in a series, so let's try a poll then.

Poll Results

OptionVotes
Abacab 5
Dodo/Lurker 5
Keep It Dark 4
No Reply At All 3
Man on the Corner 2
Another Record 1
Me and Sarah Jane 0
Who Dunnit 0
Like It or Not 0

Going for "Dodo/Lurker", just ahead of "Me And Sarah Jane". The rest mostly doesn't hold up, although "Man On The Corner" is a nice Collins-ballad.

"No Reply At All" for Mike Rutherford absolutely tearing it up on the bass.

"Man on the Corner" is not my favorite Genesis song, but it gets points for sounding so sinister and minor key.

Keep it Dark!

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Love this record. If this were a "which track on this record deserves more attention" I could vote for the winsomely arcane "Keep It Dark" or "Dodo/Lurker" or even "Like It Or Not," one of the only Genesis power ballads I really like. But I take it I'm supposed to vote for the best song and I can't deny the title track that honor. Probably this is the rock song that first taught me that rock songs could be about things other than cars, girls, and spaceships.

I loved "Man on the Corner" at the time but now I see it as the weakest song here, presaging all that was overwrought and bad about solo Phil.

My favourite Genesis album. Voting "Dodo/Luker" despite finding the bouncy keyboard sqwronk sound somewhat annoying, because the rest of the song is just so great. Though the Earth Wind and Fire horn section in "No Reply at All" is great too.

Correct title of this poll: "Wake to find you're covered in POLLophane."

despite finding the bouncy keyboard sqwronk sound somewhat annoying

That is part of my problem about the "Abacab" album. A couple of the keyboard sounds on that album were made absolutely horrible on purpose. See also the annoying synth sound in "Whodunnit".

That keyboard sound had 'incredible resonance' when I was five and listening to this cassette for the hundredth time.

Sorry, my mistake: the correct title for this poll was "I know there's a poll in there somewhere."

By the way, "Abacab" was playing at Trader Joe's yesterday afternoon. They followed it up with "Come Sail Away."

six years pass...

Listening to this album today, I was struggling to think of a worse song than "Whodunnit" in their entire catalog.
("Illegal Alien" was the only other contender i could think of)

They must have improvised that shit in the studio.

enochroot, Sunday, 7 February 2021 19:07 (three years ago) link

Illegal Alien would be a pretty decent tune if it had a completely different set of lyrics

whodunnit good

The infamous 'booing' concert from Leiden with Phil going mental is a fun listen

"Whodunnit" should have been replaced with "Submarine." Or maybe "You Might Recall" or hell, "Paperlate," all the good songs that ended up on "Three Sides Live."

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 7 February 2021 22:37 (three years ago) link

no, it's a cool and fun song

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 7 February 2021 22:46 (three years ago) link

It's a pretty crap song, but even if it wasn't it would be fine at half the length (since it already feels twice as long as it is). Usually I skip it when it hits the "we know section," and this is an album and band I *love.*

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 7 February 2021 22:55 (three years ago) link

Whodunnit rules, and both zero-vote-getters here (that and "Like It Or Not") are good songs that are better than "Man on the Corner"

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 7 February 2021 23:09 (three years ago) link

I do love "Like It or Not", but if I was on ILM 12 years ago, I'd have been more likely to toss a vote to "Another Record" or "Dodo"

enochroot, Monday, 8 February 2021 01:47 (three years ago) link

Who Dunnit is so much fun! I'm glad at least a couple of you agree. I seem to like Abacab more than most; I think it's easily the best Collins-era Genesis album and their best overall after the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Foxtrot
