Yeah, the first video's one of their older songs (live, obv), and the second video is their first single from their most recent album

Funnily enough, just got some promo hash in e-mail:

By now, I'm sure you've heard of the little band out of New Jersey called Screaming Females... in the past year they've went from being a diy or die band playing basements, bike shops, or any other weir, 400 odd places that they self-booked over the past couple of years, to being the hand-picked opener for Jack White's Dead Weather tour.

Along the way, they picked up fans like Henry Rollins, Kristen Hersh, J. Mascis, rock critics Jessica Hopper, Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis and a million other people. Just last week they appeared on MTV's It's On With Alexa Chung!

All that praise will not stop these three kids from hopping back in the van for another month long tour of the East and Midwest. They're even throwing an appearance at the Montreal Pop festival in there.

These guys are the real, rock & roll, deal

etc. etc.

Sleater Kinney meets Bikini Kill with dirtier sound.
very nice.
shame that the weakest link is the singer.

Zeno, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 15:26 (fourteen years ago) link

The singer singing? Or the singer in general? Because she also plays the guitar...

claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 15:32 (fourteen years ago) link

singer singing. and songwriting.

Zeno, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 15:35 (fourteen years ago) link

really like the sound of the stuff on their myspace page. will need to investigate further.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 15:47 (fourteen years ago) link

good stuff.
i like the singing. she's got a little biafra warble in there.
couldn't hear the lyrics though, what is it that she's a victim of?

m0stlyClean, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 20:04 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah these dudes are good! what if someone is watching their tv and baby teeth are fun records, still need to hear the new one. def something of an acquired taste but i like the warbly vocal stuff, jello & corin tucker's lovechild or something like that. cool weird catchy guitar lines too.

pretzel walrus, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 21:16 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, great guitar. i dig the solos in bell, and the little "bridge" near the end of theme just makes the song.

I think the album is kind of ho-hum tbh but I saw them play to about 20 ppl last week and they were really good - Maria is so awesome to watch you kind of have to check yourself else you just look crepey :/

Joy Orbison wrapped in clingfilm (DJ Mencap), Saturday, 6 November 2010 12:52 (thirteen years ago) link

That's the thing, is they used to be a REALLY good live band who just sort of recorded the songs they played and put out albums. But with the last album and especially this one I feel like they've put much more effort into the recording process and they've put out stuff that I actually want to listen to apart from just going to see them live.

I've been enjoying _Castle Talk_ quite a bit. I could see how the vocals might be an acquired taste for some, but the way she belts some lines reminds me of Poly Styrene in a good way.

o. nate, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 20:57 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, she eased up on those a bit with the previous album, "Power Move" (they were alllll over the first two records) but she seems to have brought them back.

cheese wiz khalifa (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 15:52 (twelve years ago) link

I like the vocals! I like the part in one song, I think it's "Normal", where she really stretches out the word "aroooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuund" and then cracks up a little bit to herself.

Yeah, it was the Church show... and the band blew my mind... I heard all the stories about how they were better live, but it was so true in their case.

The band fits the stuff I love perfectly and they do so I think with zero intent or even awareness of this. I am a self-identified metalhead hurtling towards 50 yet later in life I concluded that my second favorite genre of music was post-punk, specifically the twitchy stuff with prominent, stiff, march-along bass lines.

Screaming Females has Marissa who fucking shreds and has an amazing, powerful voice, which fits perfectly into my metallic sensibilities that have formed much of what I love about music, even non-metal stuff. And from the very brief conversation I had with her after the show, my suspicion that she came about what she does organically and without actually listening to metal was kind of confirmed. She conceded not knowing much about metal. But it doesn't matter, all it means is she developed this style without needing to cater to idiots like me.

Although it is much more likely the rhythm section, specifically Mike the bassist, do harbor enjoyment from early Cure, Killing Joke, Wire and the like, I still think that they do what they do not to emulate those things, and I base that not in a conversation but a gut feeling that they came around it the same way that punk evolved into those things, naturally and taking cues from the do-what-you-like ethos that punk embodied. And honestly, when Marissa is going off like a tiny shredding whirlwind, having a sturdy foundation is kind of necessary to keep it all together. And they do.

I am very much a late-comer to the band. I picked up Rose Mountain last year and got three more CDs from the band at the show - Castle Talk, Ugly and Power Move. Looking forward to delving into them and seeing the band again and again.

King Mike's big influence is Graham Maby. Marisa followed a pretty traditional grunge and alternative into Kill Rock Stars/K Records trajectory.

All At Once (their new album) spits fire straight through from beginning to end. Similar to 2015's Rose Mountain in that the songwriting is quite tight and catchy, but even more so, with a wider tonal palette than ever before. As a good a place to start as any, imo, though they're never made a bad record.
