I CANNOT FUCKING WAIT TO SEE THEM IN BOSTON. YAY.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Saturday, 22 March 2008 14:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Glad to hear they're back on form. I actually found last year's Glasgow Arches gig pretty disappointing. Was anyone else there?

Aye, I thought it was good, admittedly I hadn't seen them previously. I don't imagine what they're doing now will differ much from it I don't think that would have been a bad night (there was nothing lacklustre about the performance). It was pleasingly loud and although there were some spells that were a bit of a bore (haw haw), the encore for example, there were passages when they really hit it.

jim, Saturday, 22 March 2008 14:34 (sixteen years ago) link

May just have been me - I'd had a bastard of a time getting to the gig, and they'd been so great the previous occasion they played there. "I demand to have my mind blown. Right now. No. No. That's not it. Still not really feeling it . . "

Soukesian, Saturday, 22 March 2008 15:23 (sixteen years ago) link

I think the opinion that it wasn't as good as previous shows was fairly prevalent to be fair. Probably more impressive to me because I was green.

jim, Saturday, 22 March 2008 15:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Weird, I've seen this incarnation of Boredoms four times now and that Glasgow Arches gig last year was prob my fave of all of em - first time w/ the wall guitars, as Jim sez they were "pleasingly loud", and I thought they started off at just the right pitch of intensity etc

Ward Fowler, Saturday, 22 March 2008 16:55 (sixteen years ago) link

I was there too, the "pleasingly loud" occasionally became "annoyingly loud" as the sounds began to lose a bit of definition, but I was in a pretty good spot and had my mind thoroughly blown. I heard bad sound complaints from a couple of other people too.

Merdeyeux, Saturday, 22 March 2008 18:39 (sixteen years ago) link

i was into it for awhile, but i couldn't stay with it. it would kinda come and go as far as something i could latch onto.

I believe the way I described them live was as a machine of sorts which perpetually winds up and releases you, all at once.

One of the Stranger guys takes Eye and Senju out for a nice day here. You can probably ignore the text. The pictures are really neat, though.

I and I

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 22:03 (sixteen years ago) link

I also liked Human Bell just fine as an opener. Ex-Lungfish dude, I think.

oh man!!! pure joy :D :D

gff, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 05:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Human Bell were enjoyable enough. Had lost interest by the end.

RabiesAngentleman, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 10:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Notable from the evening:

- Those ORBS!
- You know those guitars that are like, 7 guitars?
- DRUMS
- A very, very small and VERY adorable Asian child running around First Ave with a flashlight.
- Some fat douchebag in dreadlocks sitting cross legged and doing elaborate spiritual moves during the Human Bell set. Awesome.
- ACID!! POLICE-AHHH!!
- Dancing people.
- The encore where they got boss.
- Turns out the bass player of my band was there!

Dumb things that happened:

- Hecklers yelling Free Bird and Slayer during the Human Bell set.
- Hecklers making sound effects during the brief quiet parts of the Boredoms set.
- I accidentally elbowed a guy.
- I FORGOT TO GET DRUNK

RabiesAngentleman, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 10:53 (sixteen years ago) link

forks, i am in, yes! also sanskrit i think?

BigLurks, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 18:12 (sixteen years ago) link

it fucking sucks when some "freebird" type loser shouts out "acid poice-ayyy" during a quiet moment. happens every time.

sanskrit, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 19:24 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm stupid and thought the show in boston was sunday. it's saturday. not that that is stopping me from going mind you.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 21:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Anyone who went to a recent show, did they happen to have the Eye Remix record for sale? I'm doubting it, but I'd love to get it. Thanks.

stingy, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 22:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I believe they did. (They had *something* with a colorful sleeve on vinyl for sale.)

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 22:16 (sixteen years ago) link

you mean Rebore Vol. 0? They had at least one copy in Portland.

sleeve, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 22:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Anybody know if Human Bell is opening the NYC show too? It's not listed on their myspace along with their other Boredoms dates. (not that this matters that much to me, I suppose, just curious)

maciej recognizing trill, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 22:43 (sixteen years ago) link

was there another boredoms thread revived recently? i thought some weird vinyls were listed as being for sale

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 22:53 (sixteen years ago) link

I was talking about this actually - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Re...Remix%3F

Eye remixes of other artists, described thusly by Other Music -

"a collection of remix and DJ work by Boredoms frontman Yamataka EYE, is all killer, no filler. EYE's been no stranger to the remix world -- he's been tearing tracks apart (mostly for Japanese indie, hip-hop, and dance artists, many unfamiliar to Western audiences) and rebuilding them as stomping tropical monsters since around the Super Ae period, turning anything he touches into jungle music in a quite literal sense (though not necessarily the drum-n-bass sense)."

Does that really happen at every show? In mpls someone did it before the encore began and Eye just smiled and said it back. It seemed like a nice moment at the time. The sound effects heckling (I don't know what else to call it), unfortunately, was mid song.

i don't really know, was talking out of my ass. saw them at bowery ballroom and it happened. saw them at shepards bush empire and it happened. want to say it happened a third time somewhere, but i can't picture where it would have been so i guess i've only seen them perform twice.

sanskrit, Thursday, 27 March 2008 02:07 (sixteen years ago) link

soft circle and black pus listed as openers for nyc.

tehresa, Thursday, 27 March 2008 02:57 (sixteen years ago) link

sanskrit, if it makes you feel any better the Rebore copies were 50 bucks plus $5 to check the item for the night. not TOO much cheaper!

I was a bit bummed that the Super Roots CD were selling for $20 each. I don't paying a little more at a show for something I can get at a local store, if it increases the chances of a band I love from coming back to tour here again. On the other hand, those Super Roots CDs are, what, 10 bucks elsewhere? 2x the normal price breaks my loyalty threshold. :/

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 27 March 2008 16:51 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't mind paying, etc.

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 27 March 2008 16:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Were they the Vice reissues? I could understand it if they were the import versions.

o. nate, Thursday, 27 March 2008 16:53 (sixteen years ago) link

cds and records are supposed to be CHEAPER at gigs!!!

s1ocki, Thursday, 27 March 2008 16:54 (sixteen years ago) link

you're cutting out the middleman and the band makes WAY more by selling htem to you directly.

s1ocki, Thursday, 27 March 2008 16:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Just went to the show last night in Chicago, and agreed about the prices being high, but I guess they have to make a living and it's a capitalist system, so if people are willing to pay it, go ahead. But yeah, $20 for Super Roots is quite much, especially when most of them aren't that long. I was more interested in some Yoshimi thing, but it was $40. There was also the Yoshimi and Mats Gustafsson collab for $30, which I think my local store had for $17 or $18. No Eye - Re: Remix though, sadly, but then that would have probably cost $40 too.

ANYWAY, the show itself was TREMENDOUS & SUPER, as everyone has said. It was my 2nd time seeing them, and having the 7-necked guitar thing added a lot to it, both musically and visually. And having the show in the round and being able to stand right beside the stage, specifically next to Eye's set-up was great. I can't believe he was still able to move around and even jump as much as he did with the broken foot. Very impressive indeed. Boredoms for life!

P.S. Does anyone have any idea about the music being played between bands? It was various tribal chant type stuff, probably just from comp's maybe, but I wouldn't mind checking out more of that kind of thing.

DOLLAR IS WEAK

Yunnan Colorfree? it is v good

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 27 March 2008 17:26 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't think it was Yunan Colorfree, looking at the cover of that one. Sounds cool though, cover of Death Valley 69 with Kim Gordon! I don't remember the title of what was there last night, unfortunately. There was also a DVD of OOIOO videos, I think that was $50. Does anyone have that Live at Sun Flancisco CD/DVD? Would love to see the footage, but can't justify spending $53 for it.

stingy, Thursday, 27 March 2008 17:37 (sixteen years ago) link

This coming August 8th, in New York, Boredoms will be heading up a sequal to the 77 Drummer Boadrum concert that was held under the Brooklyn Bridge. This year, 8/8/08, there will be eighty-eight drummers. Numerology aligns expansion.

sleep, Thursday, 27 March 2008 17:45 (sixteen years ago) link

DOLLAR IS WEAK

Sure, but they were selling the Vice reissue CDs (not imports as o nate inquired) for $20 each, which I can find for $10 at any store in town.

Hey, they can sell the CDs for any price they want! Whatever. But if they don't sell any because they're jacked too high, then that hurts the Bores too. Weak dollar sucks for anyone touring the U.S., whether the band is from the U.S. or not. Just sayin'.

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 27 March 2008 18:43 (sixteen years ago) link

$10 refers to wrapped/new/sealed, btw
