yeah i cant get enough of this album, just an incredible job all around--not just the songwriting or production but even the engineering and recording is fantastic (to my ears at least); the whole thing is so smooth and beautiful.
― fleetwood (max), Monday, 28 September 2009 23:02 (fourteen years ago) link
rasmus just bringing it on the basslines, too
― fleetwood (max), Monday, 28 September 2009 23:03 (fourteen years ago) link
its funny how stuff like this and studio is so readily comparable to the new lindstrom & PT album or the montee album despite having not very much in common except for high production values and technical competency--i think maybe thats the real hallmark of nu-balearica (besides marijuana); the terrific sounds all these guys are getting in the studio. like maybe theres just this one scando engineer whos the secret daddy of all this shit.

it really does kinda feel like there's a fairly singular vision tying a lot of this stuff together, maybe they have regional summits

i don't think this ep really has the same type of appeal as studio tho, even if there are some obvious similarities with the basslines they're working in a much different/far more AOR context
― psychgawsple, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 08:33 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah--i think the bass work is terrific but its hardly the only thing appealing about the album! the studio sound and the sound of this are related for sure but they seem to be reaching for two different things--im actually totally impressed by rasmuss ability to maintain a certain aesthetic coherency between this and the stuff he does in studio without making this just sound like studio w/ female vox

I'm so happy this record has a thread! I thought everyone was kind of indifferent about it but I've been in love with it for months. Probably my favourite Balearic-type release of the year.

Touring with Taken by Trees. Wish they would have Studio on tour with them since the reason their albums are so good is the involvement of Lissvik and Rasmus. Watching live clips on youtube of the tracks produced by the Studio guys reveals the failure of the live musicians to capture the beauty on the original recordings. I'm going to see them next week anyway, but i fully expect the show to be disappointing compared to the records.

The Pacific album is very good! "From Lips Divine" is fantastic.
The last EPDM album has somehow crept up from being "something I quite liked" to "one of my all-time favourite albums ever" in the past year and I'm not sure how or why. She doesn't really develop her lyrics but there's something about them that gets really stuck in my head, plus as has been noted the production on this is superb. There's a bit in A Better Love where she sings the line "caused you so much pain" and it just gets me every single time. I really hope she sticks with Rasmus Hagg or at least this vibe because I think it suits her very well.

There's not much to this song besides the sound of it, which is a sound I'm partial to. Hopefully other new songs will have some more substance.

― carly rae (flopson), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 15:19 (eleven years ago) link
I do really like the mood of this new track but it bothers me, because the one problem her songs have always faced is that they could with being fleshed out ever-so-slightly, not reduced to production effects and vocal mutilation. The EPDM of Love Is Not Pop is very different to the one of the first two albums, and it's that one I love - I can't fault her for wanting to try something different and push herself artistically again, but that album is so brilliant that it's hard to see a departure from that style as a better move.

I think this new album is really good, it totally makes sense that Saint Etienne have remixed the lead single which interpolates "Unfinished Sympathy" because those are the two most obvious influences on this, i.e it is very 90s. Not quite the change of direction I feared upthread - there's still all the Fleetwood Mac and lush sunset vibes - but still enough to be a pretty distinct prospect from Love Is Not Pop.
