A Sunny Day in Glasgow - Ashes Grammar

The thread. Big right now in Northeast indie stores. Philly sisters. Huge sound. Shoegaze, goth, ambient, noise, blah blah.

Could just be my bad "sunny day" (real estate, glasgow) searches, but here you go.

From the samples, it sounds better than the debut. But the credits required to download it on eMusic (22) are giving me pause.

I hesitated because of the emusic credits too, but it was well worth it.

I've been sitting on this for a few months, but the resurgence of ILM interest made me throw it on. ZOUNDS! So much better than the debut. It's probably too long, but the best songs are the longest ones oddly enough.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 11 January 2010 19:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, I need to listen to it more, but a few tracks like 'Failure' just leapt out at me. It's like all my favourite bits of UK indie cobbled together - a bit of C86 jangle, a bit of shoegaze, a bit of 'lost generation' postrock. Kind of like Seefeel meets the Shop Assistants in parts.

Now the twins have gone this isn't quite so apt, but maybe they're like an indier School of Seven Bells?

Oh I just ignore it. It's funny hearing the way some interviewers pronounce Glasgow though.

Does anyone else like them? Of the few (non-critic) reviews I've read on the net, they oft compare their latest LP Ashes Grammar to the heights of Loveless... I personally don't have the album (just their EP Nitetime Rainbows, and an idea of what the latest sounds like based off the 30sec samples on iTunes) but from what I've heard I find their stuff very, very catcthy and occasionally cathartic in the subtle ways that MBV achieved. But this is based off listening to songs off Youtube, of which there are sparing...

Like the new album a lot. Crushin am early favorite.

I feel like "restlessgaze" is a more apt descriptor of this band than "shoegaze." They're constantly switching up timbres and tempos and the vocals always seem to be coming from every direction at once. As "ethereal" as they are they don't make music to unwind to. It actually wears my ears out listening to them, as much as I enjoy them, but I guess that's part of their distinctive charm? Anyway, I dig the new album too, it seems like a more aggressive sound for them, which is interesting. I wonder how a lot of it will work out live, especially since they're apparently scattered all over the globe.

I get a bit of a broken social scene vibe from them .. It's a welcome feeling

calstars, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 00:33 (nine years ago) link

I really really like this. Reminds me of Of Montreal, especially when they yell 'ANTIPSYCHOTICS' in In Love with the Useless'. Boys Turn Into Girls and The Body, It Bends big favorites.

Frederik B, Sunday, 6 July 2014 16:34 (nine years ago) link

I feel like there's almost too much going on in the arrangements and that the songwriting would stand out more if it wasn't so busy.

calstars, Monday, 7 July 2014 22:07 (nine years ago) link

Well, the 'songwriting' would, but all those wonderful little hooks wouldn't hit quite as well if they weren't popping out of this hyperactive melange. Like the trompets on The Body, It Bends. Where did they come from AND WHY DID THEY DISSAPEAR SO SOON??!!!

the new one is the most complex yet but feels very slapdash and pitchfork bait-y... not my favorite.

Yeah it sounds like they could be trying to get a spot opening for Passion Pit or something but on the other hand that also makes it kind of a fun summer record!

Evan, Thursday, 10 July 2014 18:36 (nine years ago) link

Ha, was just going to write that they remind me of the latest Passion Pit! Which I also completely loved, and thought was unfairly maligned. Also: Autre ne Veut at his most manic, there is definitely an r'n'b inspiration on tracks like Crushin and Never Nothing.

Frederik B, Thursday, 10 July 2014 18:46 (nine years ago) link

I heard Passion Pit, too. And loved that last Passion Pit record.

I like this ASDIG album but haven't quite fallen in love with it. We'll see.

Hoping they tour Europe. Is there much talk on here about the current album?

mmmm, Saturday, 27 September 2014 09:37 (nine years ago) link

A bit.

For me it was the first half of the record that I got into first. The sequence of the first four tracks (minus the opener, though the remix of it is yards better) is great. The second half requires a bit more patience but ends up having some really nice moments too.

from 2014 Favorite Unheralded Albums:

Great thread. Speaking of A Sunny Day In Glasgow, I really enjoy Jen Goma's guesting on the (I guess under-heralded?) Deluxe Edition of The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart's Days of Abandon (they've also got Kelly Pratt of Beirut in there, but think Goma sings most if not all of the guest leads). Anyway, her bonus tracks vocals, plus her performances on the basic first-edition sequence, really help to sell me on the whole thing (the dude vocals seem better when you've got more alternatives), and the rhythm section is pretty toned for "dream-pop" or whatever you call this stuff.

And with a 4AD/TeenBeat-esque album cover. Thanks for the alert. Jen Goma was a great addition to the last Pains album and I've always liked Kurt Feldman's other projects even better.

"Ashes Grammar" was my album of the year, easy, in 2009, wish I'd been here to praise it. And when I saw ASDIG live last summer, at an unfortunate venue, barely an audience, me one of only four people standing by the stage, it was still probably the best performance I saw all year. Joyous, genuine, awesome--your words are apt.

geoffreyess, Sunday, 7 June 2015 15:35 (eight years ago) link

3/5 of the group was at Union Pool a few nights ago for the Roman a Clef album release party. Ben got on stage to play the ending solo on one of the songs, and Chris Georges got up to do the same on "Roman Clay."

RaC also played at Cake Shop on the LES a few days before. So cool to see them in such a small venue, and they sounded great. Kurt seems to have many talents and drumming is another one to add to the list.
