GARETH?!?!

Honestly, I can't believe you. Esp. being such a Suede fan and all...

Ooh, part of me wants very much to side with Venga and pick "Street Life" but there's just something so off and compelling about "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" that it gets to me every time and I must pick that instead.

Nicole, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Can I second Nicole's shock there. Gareth, please fix this unfortunate situation posthaste. :-)

"Mother of Pearl" jumped most immediately to mind, but that's probably because I was so amazed to hear they did that one live last year -- unfortunately I couldn't attend the show, which still annoys me greatly. But there are about 25 other choices I could select, frankly. "Casanova," "Triptych," "All I Want Is You," "Out of the Blue," "Sea Breezes," "2HB," "Ladytron," "In Every Dream Home a Heartache," "Avalon," "Manifesto," "Trash," "Both Ends Burning," "End of the Line," "Street Life"...

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

later: "Avalon," earlier: "For Your Please," and if I can pick 3: "Mother of Pearl"

cecilia, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Of the tracks I've heard so far, "Do the Strand" still wins.

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Gareth, you really ought to check out Roxy Music. (I bet you have heard some of their songs without knowing who it was.)

Ned, no fair picking so many songs on a OPO thread.

I don't know them as well a I like (and rather stupidly I don't own their first two albums, in particular, though I hope I'll correct that some time within a year). "Mother of Pearl" was the first song of theirs to attract my attention. I would actually say "Whirlwind" which will probably puts me in a minority, but I really like Ferry's crazy singing on that song.

DeRayMi, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Actually, there's quite a bit of variety in the answers here, compared to the answers for some groups. (Possibly simply because R.M. has more good songs than the average band.)

DeRayMi, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Just Another High"

Arthur, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ned, no fair picking so many songs on a OPO thread.

Roxy is one of those groups that I can't limit myself. Simply impossible. :-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

best non-Ferry song (ie lazy lyrics by Ferry on top of instrumental showcase from the band, supposedly co-written, Ferry and Manzanera) "Out of the Blue" for sheer 3 dimmensional sheen and vroom (that's the _studio_ version on the 4th album)

where do you start and what do you reject with so much extraordinary music almost compressed into the bands first 5 studio albums ? even if "Whirlwind" features slightly silly lyrics it still rocks and rhymes -- the worst song on Siren yet probably a better song than many other bands have ever achieved

RMs self-mocking "outrage" at its own audacity and "impeccable style" seems to have gone under the heads of the American audience of the day, which set against RMs achievements is a minor outrage, more a distinguishing hallmark

also note the unique approach to the problem of bass players resulting in the correct bass players for songs and a revolving door rhythm section, not manipulated as a variable so brazenly by other bands

compare these fine albums to solo Ferry minus those same musos and i think the "musical nucleus" should have been expanded for song- writing credits purposes -- that is, the semi-co-ordinated spazz of the musicians is greater than the sum with this band, the first clear "VU influenced" band

George Gosset, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

i just bought the first 2 albums in the hmv sale, so my ignorance should be approaching an end.

i'm not as much a suede fan as everyone seems to think you know!

gareth, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Are you impressed Gareth?

Venga, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

haven't played them yet!

gareth, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's Virginia Plain uber alles because of the very end of it when it all crashes together, that's the best thing.

Ally, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

George, I don't have "Siren" but I have heard it before, or at least some of the songs, and I can't see how "Whirlwind" is the worst. I've heard "Love is the Drug" a little too much, and somehow the lyrics are excessively specific for me to want to listen to them repeatedly. I still am not entirely sure what "Whirlwind" is about, and in this case that seems to give it an advantage over "Love is the Drug." It's kind of the way I feel about some Dylan songs: the fact that they are telling a specific story makes me less interested in hearing them again and again. There's not enough room for me as a listener.

DeRayMi, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

well i guess nobody is gonna pick 'love is the drug' so i guess i'll have to but....secretly "editions of you" wins

geeg, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

DRM, i think "you can guess the rest" goes for both songs -- I didn't notice you'd singled out "Whirlwind" at the time I posted but in my experience it was the most catchy of the songs on that record so it burnt me out on itself; the lyrics are a little glib i think once you've dispensed with the music; and given previous unsolicited exposure "Love is the Drug" had already ceased to be of any interest to me years before i'd heard the whole album so it's hard to approach as a song as i've always been sick of it, but that doesn't mean it isn't a good song as well as being an especially good fit for Roxy Music;

but you're lucky to have not got close to having finished with "Siren" yet; how i wish there was another Roxy Music album out there that i haven't worn out, although i still listen; go and buy "Siren"; some people think it's their best, and "Love is the Drug" is conveniently first eliminated

George Gosset, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

'Do the Strand' - easily.

Dave225, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm also going to have to go with the live version of "In Every Dream Home, a Heartache."

Nick A., Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

'Pyjamarama' - almost. 'Do The Strand' - nearly. 'Street Life' - a gnat's crotchet away.

'Both Ends Burning' does it for me today though...

Ray M, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I still say "Do the Strand", but I wanted to mention the fact that I just saw Bryan Ferry hanging out the window of an SUV as said vehicle pulled out of the parking lot of the Muchmusic building. We just happened to be doing a loop of the area on the way from Comdex to a Comdex event and BAM, there he was.

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bryan Ferry in an SUV? That seems so sick and wrong.

Nicole, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bryan Ferry hanging out the window sounds wrong. He'll muss his hair.

RickyT, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, if it was a Land Rover, it'd be forgiven. Then it seems like he's on safari.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, Gareth, have you played them yet? So what do you think?

Arthur, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

He wasn't driving, but was in the seat behind the passenger seat. I'm assuming it was a record label people transport or something. His hair was a-blowin' in the wind, but it actually suited him.

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I can't believe it. No one has voted for If There Is Something yet. Probably the GRATEST song of the 70s! Genius and beauty and madness.

And Gareth, did you listen to them now? After more than four months?

Look-at-me pick: "Your Application's Failed"

Sean (Sean), Friday, 15 November 2002 16:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's one of the B-sides that never appeared on album -- the import box set has them all, happily. Some of them are way goofy instrumentals!

That's right, he is coming through town...

Just Another High for me.

dan (dan), Friday, 15 November 2002 16:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Is it Paul Thompson uttering the words "You're applications's failed" on that one? Top drummer.

Can't choose between "In every dream home" and "Mother of Pearl" myself.

But very few albums start better than "Remake/Remodel".

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 15 November 2002 16:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

so many greats, but "Editions of You" takes the cake for me. Shorter, crazy solos and revelations like "too much cheesecake too soon" and "boys will be boys will be boyeeyoyoys!"
