been diggin this guy for a few months ~ kinda a blissed out, more melodic but also glitchy casiotone for the painfully alone

idk this does it for me more than the rest of the glo-fi chillwave trendy shit

I like a lot of the stuff on Causers of This, but the vocal style is kind of a turn-off for me. Still, a good album. I don't even know where I heard of this. I think I downloaded Talamak off some music blog, and it sat around for weeks before I finally listened to it.

richie aprile (rockapads), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 00:17 (fourteen years ago) link

allmusic's review calls it "forgettable", but that's too harsh a word to describe what I think is good about the album: It's catchy, but in a subtle way. It doesn't stick in my head like a iPhone ad jingle might. I remember as I'm listening to it, because there is a lot happening in these songs - lots of little parts that pop up and go away just as quickly. Albums with that quality tend to last longer with me.

Anyway... surprised there's only one post on this thread.

Wears its influences a bit thick (J Dilla / Daft Punk) but kind of enjoying this so far.

LOVE the Tegan and Sara remix (but can't find it anywhere...)

Spencer Chow, Friday, 19 March 2010 20:11 (fourteen years ago) link

I might go see them on monday with The Ruby Suns and Oryx and Crake(?) even though I'm not a big fan on any embellished flowery indie/pop music and/or animal collective/grizzly bear trippy stuff.

When I'm drinking I think I could easily like songs from any of these 3 bands. I'm not as uptight as my first sentence^ makes me seem. I'm just saying I don't buy that kind of music.

love Lissoms and the title track

interesting (and often frustrating) how many of the acts doing this kind of thing tend to keep the tracks under 3 minutes

Sounds like a pretty good live show. I might go check them out when they come around.

Bundick (also working on disco/house project under the moniker Les Sins)

I haven't heard any of that. Is it good?

viborg, Thursday, 13 May 2010 17:04 (fourteen years ago) link

I haven't heard it either but it looks like there might be Les Sins stuff we can listen to online.

dynamicinterface, Thursday, 13 May 2010 21:13 (fourteen years ago) link

That guy's Washington Post review was of them opening for Caribou (who they had reviewed previously and featured an interview with instead of a review this time). I wasn't able to make it.

so, on November 9 Chaz is going to release a Les Sins single - "Lina" (probably my favourite single of 2009 btw), and that's really sweet news

underneath the pine is soundin a lot more "formed" & anthemic than his previous stuff -- liking elise & new beat & still sound the most

johnny crunch, Friday, 4 February 2011 23:54 (thirteen years ago) link

"still sound" def stands out but the whole album is gr8. not very "chillwave" either more like caribou/ dude makin music style

gr8080, Friday, 4 February 2011 23:57 (thirteen years ago) link

'New Beat' sounds like a song written around a cool bass line

Looking forward to the album.

On the last one, 'Thanks Vision' just KILLS it

blackcoffeeredsun, Saturday, 5 February 2011 02:41 (thirteen years ago) link

'new beat' sounds like mj's 'baby be mine' and it's cool but all album is a little bit boring. 'how i know' is my favourite.

this just in: a brand new track from Chaz! gram it while it's hot: http://pitchfork.com/news/43164-toro-y-moi-is-ifreaking-outi-on-new-ep/

sounds a bit like it's his response to either "Friday I'm In Love", "Friday" or "Sundae Love" (lol)

V79, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 13:33 (twelve years ago) link

...it turns out it's actually his kinda response/homage/cover to Sway's "Saturday Night Hustle", I had no idea before.

Liking the new album a lot so far. A bit dancier and while I wouldn't say his voice is stronger, he seems to be learning how to work around its limitations better.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 01:35 (eleven years ago) link

Album cover reminds me of pre-dreads Bobby McFerrin.

Early return: it's split between Royal Scam-ish jazz rock and Big Star power pop. Obviously very 70s sounding. I dig it, but I'm also biased toward anyone who knows their way around a 7th chord.

klonman, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 13:21 (nine years ago) link

I think this new one is his best since Causers

calstars, Sunday, 5 April 2015 11:27 (nine years ago) link

no way I haven't heard the new one yet but each of his first three was better than the last

The Reverend, Sunday, 5 April 2015 22:23 (nine years ago) link

okayyyyyy just gonna have to call a no on this album. It just isn't what I want from him at all, it feels like such a regression from the more interesting direction he was going. I don't fucking need more classic rock in my life.
