I've just been trying to catch up on the great releases I missed before voting. And yeah, I vote honestly wherever I'm allowed. Pazz & Jop prefers I not list clients, so I didn't there. Conflict of interest is something I have to watch closely because of my many endeavors.

Back on the subject, I recall clearly the show where I first saw YOB when they supported us at Ash St Saloon with Sea of Green headlining. Mike was wearing a baseball cap, wire rimmed glasses, and a Hawaiian shirt in those days. But they played "Revolution" from their demo and we were all blown away.

What year was that? Hey is it true that the Yob demos are available on vinyl?

Yes there is now a YOB demo vinyl. I still have the old CDr that I got in the mail too.

I guess that show was Nov 18th 2000. Crazy. I still have a few handbills somewhere that I made.

Mike sent the demo to Robwrong when he was still the main reviewer for Stonerrock.com. He came to practice and said "there's finally another doom band in Oregon", and we were stoked.

Since then, I booked essentially every YOB show outside of Eugene.

I dont have the cdr just mp3s, I need to get the vinyl. If i can find anywhere selling it. ATH is too expensive and to justify shipping you need to order more than 1 thing but now plus they wont mark down value so customs stops their packages so I cant order vinyl from them. And its not the kinda thing uk distros tend to get.
When is the new album coming out on vinyl?

There are major festivals in US and Europe where YOB can be seen in Spring 2010.

YOB (and I) will be at Roadburn. That's official. What I can't say is the name of the ultra-cool US doom label that is putting out the YOB vinyl. Please just mentally guess and know that you're right so I don't get in trouble.

Another great one was Soilent Green, Isis, Witch Mountain, YOB. Can't recall the date but it was right after Isis put out SGNL 5 ep.

I will give this band another chance in 2010. I tried listening to each of their Metal Blade albums and was bored horizontal. But I'll give it one more shot.

Catharsis is best

The new one's the best.

For me Unreal Never Lived and the new one are tied for best. Title track of Catharsis is pretty monumental and emotional though...

"The Lie That Is Sin" from the new one (first vid on the YouTube companion thread) is the best thing they ever did, totally blew me away at first listen. Some folks seem to have a problem with the vocals on the new album, but I think they're better than ever. Sure looking forward to that Roadburn show!

just to note that i saw YOB, witch mountain and lesbian last night at a weird vegan punk bar that smells like barbecue sauce (which used to be a nasty orange douche bar with a lamborghini on the roof). fucking crushed, a yob-shaped bootprint throbbing on my tender lobes. plus uta plotkin, witch mountain singer, was so fucking great & inspiring. for the record.

made me think how balkanized the seattle scene is. like zero audience crossover with the garage/punk shows i usually go out for. why is rockers not want to rock?

Uta Plotkin is a badass. That show in Seattle was so fun. I drove us home after the show and almost killed the whole band in a freak hydroplane.

No one around here likes it but it's weirdly growing on me. Not sure why or how. Those super earnest vocals and spoken bits certainly require some suspension of, err, irony.

His new material at the live shows is really going somewhere. He doesn't even play most of the album songs live anymore. Rapid growth as per usual. Mike throws away better songs than most people will ever write.

seeing 'em tonight, looking fwd to it. I don't get wrapped up in their music the way a lot of ppl to but when I saw them in London a couple of years back w/o really hearing them beforehand they were p undeniable

first listen thru i found it kinda tedious, maybe i just need more of a lock-in on the hypnotic elements. but when they get all neurosisy and substitute anguished bellowing for whatever else they've got going, i find it hard to maintain an interest.

newest album is really entrancing. esp all the open high strings they let ring out all the time....

i can't believe how great Great Cessation is. like I love all their albums that I'd bought previously but I bought this one at the show and it's just so supremely dark and savage, but constructed so well, with some really pretty passages in there.

saw them last night, they were great and really immersive

I saw Yob last year with one of my best friends, who had a mental breakdown earlier that day and almost missed the show. She started crying during "Our Raw Heart", and then went up to Mike to take a picture with him after and he said "I think you need one of these" and hugged her.

He is such a dope guy.

they played my favorite Yob song (all 20+ min of "Catharsis") when I saw them last week -- i could not be more grateful to have heard this superlong song performed live and in person. Yob is generous!

Wearing the shirt as I type. I am so glad I went to this show, so grateful for this band's existence. Beauty in Falling Leaves was breathtaking live.
