pretty sure this is obvious (and i know it doesn't matter) but bec subsequent posts indicate otherwise...
i'm celebrating perry's video because it is HILARIOUS
and "awesomely emo" wasn't an endorsement of that bruno mars song

yeah i hated on that song so hardcore the first bunch of times i saw the video & when i scored it on Singles Jukebox, then when the local top 40 station started playing it i kept catching myself liking the intro and then getting mad at myself about that

the big flaw of my J.R. Rotem singles poll thread is that it now feels incomplete post-"Love Like Woe" in accurately summing up the horror of Rotem's body of work

I heard it for the first time recently, and didn't know what it was, and spent *an amount* of time googling "sounds like owl city" so I'm feeling like

so today this dude i work w/ sometimes put me up on some dope 2010 j & k-pop (no far east movemento)
alright so MONKEY MAJIK (swag) are a j-pop band fronted by... two canadian dudes? idk really know the deal but this song is a fucking jam -- like one of the best rock songs i've heard this year, just a classic pop-rock killer idk what else to say -- has a sorta early 2000s vibe to it in its slickness & pop-punkiness i think (i also wanna say phoenix but don't wanna scare ppl off)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6NY2ZCeEQ8
2NE1 are a korean girl group fronted (i think) by a chick that looks like nicole richie -- some of their songs are hella ke$ha but "baksu chyeo"/"clap your hands" is more like peppy electro-r&b w/ a drip-drop keyboard thing a la "me & u" -- the chorus has a great melody & actually benefits from not trying to shoehorn "clap your hands in", instead sticking w/ the japanese version -- also the beat goes all danchall (+ AIRHORNS) for a rap verse, then there's a super autotuned bridge that's pretty dope -- this sounds like a lot of stuff on the radio here but it reminds me more of, like, "whip my hair" than ubiquitous electro stuff
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTw-UM5Jy4E
SS501 are a boy band that have been kicking around since 05 it looks like (might've been a reality show formed thing) & "let me be the one" is a piano ballad that sounds like something that ne-yo might've written for backstreet boys if their peaks were at the same time

K-pop
lotta good stuff in there, 2NE1 are dope
― dayo, Wednesday, 22 December 2010 00:44 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah i was gonna read up on that thread but wanted to give this stuff some wider exposure
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 22 December 2010 00:44 (thirteen years ago) link
lol - a K-pop single was featured on the singles jukebox and got pretty high marks across the board. although lex's review really got under my skin
― dayo, Wednesday, 22 December 2010 00:45 (thirteen years ago) link
shit, i should look that up
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 22 December 2010 00:47 (thirteen years ago) link
he also played me this dope BIGBANG song but i can't remember the name of it
also played me the BIGBANG/2NE1 song that's a dead chorus of the three 6 song "lolli lolli"
er, where the chorus is a dead rip off of*
I think the key to remember is yeah, the songwriters and producers are obviously informed by western pop aesthetics, but the end product is still made for an audience w/ different expectations and from a different musical tradition... so tryin to use the exact same metrics to judge k-pop/j-pop as you would to judge western pop might not give you the most rewarding results

There has been so many rumours and incorrect reports surrounding the new Britney Spears single. However, what is officially true is that the 29-year-old held dancing auditions yesterday (December 22nd) for the music video of her new single ‘Hold It Against Me’. The music video is being choreographed by Britney’s pal Brian Friedman who has been sprouting off about yesterday’s casting on his twitter.
Friedman, who also choreographs on the UK X Factor, previously choreographed the singer’s visuals for ‘Toxic’ and ‘Me Against the Music’. In fact, one attendee at the audition described the routine as “Slave 4 U/Toxic/MATM type choreography”. A staggering 5,000 people is said to have attended the audition. ‘Hold It Against Me’, which is produced by Max Martin and Dr Luke, is set to exclusively premiere in January. The new album is scheduled to follow in March. Check out a photo below of yesterday’s casting.

At No. 1 on Digital Songs, Bruno Mars' "Grenade" sells 559,000 downloads (up 164%) -- the third biggest sales week for a digital song in history. Right behind him this week at No. 2 is Katy Perry's "Firework" with 509,000 (up 165%) -- the fourth largest frame ever.

i have no beef with "grenade"
― The Reverend, Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:06 (thirteen years ago) link
but like oh hey, a rap song that is actually a rap song in the top 10. never thought i'd see that.
i guess "6 foot 7 foot" was in the top ten last week. that's good too.
― The Reverend, Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:08 (thirteen years ago) link
but it doesn't feel like nearly as much of a huge hit as b&y does
― The Reverend, Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:09 (thirteen years ago) link
i thought it was called 6'7" but i'm seeing it listed as six foot seven foot everywhere, which kind of makes no sense
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:10 (thirteen years ago) link
the sample goes "6 foot, 7 foot, 8 foot, hut"
