Iggy Vs The Corrs

A great rock n'roll moment took place last week between Iggy and The Corrs. The Corrs were sat in a small pulpit area a few yards above the side of the Olympia stage in Dublin. Included in the non-entity bunch were Andrea, Caroline and her new 'property developer' husband, the dickface brother and a couple more small fish. What they were doing at an Iggy Pop gig nobody knows but by the end of it they no doubt wish they hadn't bothered.

Andrea Corr seemed to be constantly smirking down at the crowd below as if she saw herself like some ancient mythical Irish Queen gazing out on her peasent subjects while the freaky circus prankster danced maniacally on the stage. Then horror at the end of one song as Iggy did the unspeakable and literally spat in the face of Official Ireland by launching a fully formed perfectly aimed gob right into the middle of the Corr clan, hittting one of the girls on the hair. A great moment for sure and the shock on their faces had me laughing like a hyena below. In the middle of the next song the bare blood stained chested Igster stared angrily up at them once more and screamed "Who The Fuck Are All You" and then slung his microphone into their seats knocking over their drinks. This finally caused terrified Andrea to skip hastily away while the others smiled awkwardly on pretending to know the songs by nodding gently along to Stooges classics.

Meanwhile in the pulpit on the other side, the tiny ultra weird Budda like BP Fallon sat completely still in full US Army gear for the whole event while his harem of 3 tall gorgeous raven haired and black clad chicks danced around him like sex crazed demons. Bizarre evening.

The band itself were Iggy's usual awful sub metal types that he's had since the Instinct tour and combined with the shit sound it made for painful listening at times but for once it was the quantity and not quality that mattered. Any other Irish ILMers head down?

so _that_ was who he was so pissed off at. i was underneath the boxes on that side and couldn't see who was in them. he really hated them. i did however have a great view of bp (the p is for pimp) fallon and his dancing girls. ughh.

as for iggy, the gig was great, loved when the mosh pit piled onto the stage.

angela, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Kewl, I was so far over to the left I couldn't see the Corrs just Beep over on the right - and he's old and infirm.

Personally I'm all on for his metal shtick. Sounded pretty good live to me.

I think I preferred the sheer rock power of his National Stadium gig (circa about 1989) - which was seated.... for about 5 seconds until the chairs were dumped in huge mounds at the back of the hall.

I don't care about the Corrs music, I do care about them being in shit Irish celeb rags 24/7 and being part of sham award ceremonies and the sort of backslapping bullshit that makes Dublin about as productive for music as my fucking wardrobe. So it doesn't bother me much either way to have a clapped out former legend spitting at a clapped out MOR celeb.

She's too successful? Too pretty? Too popular? She makes mediocre music that sells by the bucketload instead of crap music that only a tiny coterie of smug hipsters is interested in?

Well, maybe it's because the pampered tosspots were sat like royalty observing the peasantry at play and were only there because their PR ppl thought they needed to be "seen" at an Iggy show that the old fecker got so rankled. So I feel compelled to say "nice one, Mr Osterberg".

If he had spat in Jim Corr's hair would yr attitude be different?

Santa's little helper, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

the iggy of 1970 wd have acted so as to encourage the corrs to spit at him

i can't honestly see how idespair's "girls must be treated special" sexism is any great improvement on what he/she's "despairing" (=posturing) about

mark s, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I did not say "girls must be treated special". Spitting on people is contemptible, regardless of the sex of the person being spat on. The references to the Corr women are riddled with sexism. It hardly needs textual analysis to bring this out. But if you're determined to explain it away I'm sure that a little disingenuousness (or stupidity) will do the trick.

It's not ok for people to be spat at because they've gone to an Iggy Pop gig for what you surmise may be inauthentic motives; or because you imagine they may have an unflattering view of other people present (including, most hurtfully of course, your wonderful self).

As a feminist I can hardly argue that women have a right to extra protection from men around them if some middle-aged boor want's to spit at them. Nevertheless in my experience most decent men seem to have a strong impulse to protect women in these circumstances. Not one guy here has unambiguously criticised Iggy for spitting on a woman's hair or expressed any sympathy whatsoever for the woman. I agree that this in itself can hardly be called sexism but I think I'm entitled to draw my own conclusions about the type of creeps you are.

"middle-aged" = so much for the moral highground

mark s, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Referring to middle-aged man as middle-aged might be relinquishing the moral high ground at a gathering of saints. Not so much in a thread dedicated to celebrating spitting at people, and gratuitously insulting the people spat at, though.

I'm not vegan; but I don't think the existence of worse suffering somewhere else is a reason for condoning cruelty where you find it.

As for suggestion that I am disqualified from objecting to sexism because I am a member of the class of people most affected. I mean that's just fucking genius isn't it? What a bright boy. Your mother MUST be proud.

Idespair, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's your opinion that this thread is sexist. You can make almost anything seem like sexism if it involves a woman.

I've already said why I'm not getting into that debate. Some of the comment above and the motives behind it are misogynist. I don't believe there's anyone here stupid enough not to know it. If there is I have no faith in my capacity to enlighten them.

That it's possible to interpret a non-sexist text in a sexist way is true but beside the point. I'm interested in entering a debate to "prove" something to someone who already knows it but is being wilfully obtuse or just plain lying. Read the thread.

sundar subramanian, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

it's not the fact that iggy spit on a woman's hair. It's the fact that he barked and terrorized members of the corrs (''This finally caused terrified Andrea to skip hastily away while the others smiled awkwardly on pretending to know the songs by nodding gently along to Stooges classics.''). And that story was funny!!!

At the end of the day it's harmless entertainment for all! And there's nothing wrong w/that.

Julio Desouza, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Julio how can it be just a bit of fun and also terrorizing? i've never heard anything about Iggy that suggest his extreme stage humiliations - which he does not spare himself from btw - are particularly aimed at women. he's just bile all around! I mean "spit in the hair" - potent image - is the least of it. he was terrorizing and publicly humiliating a very well-known (it seems to me; I don't know who the Corrs are) group of VIP attendees!

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Of course spitting isn't nice and certainly isn't big and grown up but The Corrs deserve what they got as far as I'm concerned. I'd be happy if they whole lot of them got showered.

Winkelmann, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Who da fuck are the Corrs? (as Iggy said, "Who The Fuck Are All You") Why so much disdain for them? Are they that bad? Or do they come off as smug? I can see hating their music (I guess - I've never heard it) but is there something about them personally? I got the part about Andrea sitting like a queen... but do they come off that way all the time?

Does America have a similarly hated group that is relatively unknown elsewhere?

Dave225, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

tracer- the fact you haven't heard the Corrs means you might not see the funny side. The way David phrases the story, it appears that the Corrs were there just to be seen at an Iggy pop show. I wouldn't be surprised if he knew who the corrs were and he just did it on purpose just to gain a bit of publicity too. so it's funny if you look at all that.

entertainment for all= for everyone else bar the corrs obv.

''unless it's totally harmless and "just entertainment".''

Ultinately it was harmless. HA HA tarcer are you saying that it would have been bettah if Iggy and andrea FITE! (actaully i'd rather they mud wrestle). or are you just trying to screw w/ my head.

JUlio Desouza, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I guess what I'm saying Julio is that everyone's been focusing on this poor spat-upon woman when it sounds like Iggy was doing other equally bad things - publicly calling them out, knocking over their drinks, literally driving them from their seats. If this all adds up to "entertainment" for you, fine, but to me it sounds like something else - impulse vs. manners, for instance, or rage vs. complacence, or ugly vs. pretty - that seems more complex and maybe more meaningful than the word "fun" can contain. mark s is OTM - Iggy's greatest trick is the annihilation of pomposity through self-abasement - maybe he twigged that they were so lobotomized no amount of goading would provoke their inner freak-demon

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

''If this all adds up to "entertainment" for you, fine, but to me it sounds like something else - impulse vs. manners, for instance, or rage vs. complacence, or ugly vs. pretty - that seems more complex and maybe more meaningful than the word "fun" can contain.''

to me it really is entertaining. I don't know how you could read this much into the situation. maybe you could clarify? (it's OK if you don't).

''maybe he twigged that they were so lobotomized no amount of goading would provoke their inner freak-demon''

from the account given. First he spat at one of them at the end of one song. They didn't move and so Iggy started calling them out in the middle of the next one. Lobotomy indeed!

in 1970 he was playing to a far more 'dangerous' crowd. If he had spat at them he would've got it. nowdays he's a part of the world of entertainment and so he gets VIPs (and no confrontation).

Julio Desouza, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Julio I can be massively entertained by utterly un-"fun" events or performances (i.e. nasty or technically awful or severely depressing) - calling it "fun" underplays and simplifies what it sounds like Iggy did.

a) Idespair (good name, but not as good as your first alleged mail address): I did not say "girls must be treated special". Spitting on people is contemptible, regardless of the sex of the person being spat on.
But you did connect the spitting -- and the cheering of the same -- with sexism, in the punch going "You sad, inadequate, sexist assholes, which, as far as I can see, had no other foundation than that it was a woman who was spat on by a man.

b) Idespair: The references to the Corr women are riddled with sexism.
As far as I can see, they are not. You clearly see things different. Could you enlighten me how the original post is "riddled with sexism"? Honestly, I'm baffled

c) Spitting on people is neither big or clever, I agree, but neither is textual analysis.

d) Just realised idespair has probably err-Left The Building-uh!, and since I didn't find the following Julio-Tracer exchange very interesting, I'll just say

The Corrs are NOT INNOCENT and they SUCK as an example of feminism. Have you seen the video for their song where they take the piss out of Destiny's child as if they're BETTER, as if DC are FUNNY, as if hip hop hos are hilarious ... though i do love the corrs for being so straight ... i love them for being so christian but that's what you want if you're a christian, to be spat upon so that you know that you're standing up for what you believe in. if iggy didn't spit on them, what would they have to endure? what use would their years of warm parenting be? i'm tempted to say that iggy's a better example to girls, though i can't justify it. i guess he's a better example to girls because he's such an object. he totally degrades himself in a way that few men will - in a way that lots of women, will, though ... he's the type of guy who would have been threatened loads of times for acting 'gay.' if anyone deserves to spit on someone, surely it's him.

Mark, Tom, Julio --

Right at the outset, I want to make a few things completely clear: Since I haven't liked anything Iggy's done in about twenty years, I wouldn't describe myself as a 'fanboy.' Moreover, I've never knowingly heard the Corrs, and I have no opinion on them one way or the other.

As a lawyer, I'm very interested in the idea of burden of proof. In this situation, I think the burden of proof would be on those who are criticizing Iggy's behavior rather than those who find it amusing.

The argument that Iggy doesn't have a reputation for spitting on people is asinine. Iggy has a reputation for doing stupid and gross things. Spitting is a stupid and gross thing. It's not too hard to draw the lines.

I'm very sorry that Andrea Corr got spat on and found it to be disgusting. If Iggy had spat on me I too would be disgusted. Perhaps I'm just unlucky that I don't have a bunch of fans I can rely upon to attack him for me.

Bottom line: if he spat on somebody non-famous, we wouldn't even have heard about it, and I barely heard about it as it is.

Look, kids....for a start, this board represents a *DEBATE* (see the "vs" in the title?), i.e. I'm simply presenting one side of the argument. That you're failing to represent the other side of the argument adequately is your own fault. Moreover, you accuse me of "pissing people off," yet assume the name "Sad Sad Iggy Pop," a provocative a name as any comment I could come up with. Come up with a better retort than "stop posting on this thread" and maybe some progress will be made. (That the debate itself is a herculean example of pointlessness is another matter). Maybe check out some of the other non-Iggy/Corrs threads. This isn't simply a hallelujah chorus for any one single artist.

Mix it up a bit, man... OK all the IGGY fans now should take on the position of the Corrs fans.. and all the Corrs fans should take on the position of ... (could say "head out of ASS!" but ...) Iggy fans...

I really liked how the lead singer of the Corrs fell on that table in the bar and got the stem of a martini glass stuck in her.

Oh, wait.
I guess I haven't gotten into the spirit of dave225's suggestion....

Was Led Zeppelin playing in the bar that night, Custos? (*sorry!*)

Y'know whats odd? The Corrs would, in theory, be a band I'd stereotypically be into. I have a real weak spot for Celts, I prefer female singers to male, I like nearly group that has a Fleetwood Mac influence...but for some reason, I just can't get into the Corrs.
Why is that?

Was Led Zeppelin playing in the bar that night, Custos? (*sorry!*)
Nope...the Cranberries opened that night.

OK, I'll give it my best shot:

I think it was simply ghastly the way that horrid Pop fellow spat in poor dear Andrea's hair - didn't he even stop to think of the possible consequences?

Why she might have needed to use a different shampoo afterwards to get it out and that could have given her dry hair and split ends or anything which could have ended her entire career!

Is that better Dave?

You are so hilarious (for those who didn't realise, I'm being sarcastic) Everyone loves a lame ass.

yknow, this has gotten way more responses than an ordinary old "TS: Iggy Pop vs The Corrs" thread EVER would have.

Goody goody - being popular is just SO important, don't you think?

Is it just me, or does that Dixie Chicks cover of "Landslide" completely validate nu-country as a genre?

So, yeah, anyway, the Corrs deserved it. Glad we're all in agreement and that's settled then.

five years pass...

A decade later:

- The Dundalk "Fab Four" have become more famous for their everlasting career hiatus, than their poor, pissant "oeuvre", achieving
solely one goal: making Coldplay and Dolores O'Riordan sound like fuckin' Beethoven in comparison...

- Andrea still hasn't realized she sounds like a cat in agony, nevertheless she decides to put out not ONE, but TWO solo albums...

- Apparently too busy to save Obama, Bono didn't bother enlighting her as to the fact she still posesses the writing "auteur"
skills of a mentally challenged kid in last-stage leukemia.

- Undeterred in her grandiose endeavours, she painfully achieved the sale of merely two dozen copies of her first solo masterpeice
to her siblings' kids, which helped scoring a number #8 on the Philippines charts, due to the sheer number of the ever-expanding offspring that only Brangelina &Ben Affleck/Jennifer Garner can rival.

- With the looks of a junkie that could frighten Nicholson&Keith Richards in their prime coke roller-coaster days, she may eventually be coming to the conclusion that the Corrs beauty canon has always appealed solely to gay&senior audiences.
Thus she applied for a rock-solid life insurance by marrying a billionaire, while she struggles to reach 10000 followers on Twitter.

- Finally, Andrea says she's afraid of celebrity lifestyle. Her fucktard brother scares me way more.

- Sharon Corr, in a stroke of genius, puts out a solo album, too, apparently without Bono&Brian Eno's artistic endorsment, then
angrily blames the poor sales on the fiercy pirates who downloaded it for free, while struggling to learn how to turn a computer
on...her husband would gladly help, but couldn't, since he's too busy downloading on his own. Some serious porn. Sharon admits to smoking like a camel. Hubby actually realises she is one.

- The major failing of this second solo endeavor by a Corr is to be blamed on the Jewish-American-Masonic-Alien conspiracy, led by W. Bush&Winny the Pooh, who turned to be a major pedobear, says brother Jim (he has proof of all facts, since he dug out the secret archives of the World in the ruins ot the World Trade Center), in order to prevent camel sis to gain more followers than him&Andrea combined, on Twitter.

- Last but not least, the Corr-"Man" admits turning Goebbels by jerking way too much when spying on his sisters in the bathroom, thus having the idea behind the corporate incest ad that morphed into The Corrs.

- Two years from now, drummer Caroline either gives birth to 5 more kids, or reveals the truth of being a shemale. Like her sisters.

The Corrs, a band that will endure the test of time...

I prefer Iggy in this match up. I believe, because of his songs and because of the extra ability he has to drum, I would place him clearly above the CORRS on ability and overall results. On the other hand if the Corrs could quickly release three of the greatest rock records of all time, they could quickly catch up.
