voted "You Must Be Stopped" but it was hard. This is one of my No.1 albums of all time.

I should listen to this again sometime. I bought it when it came out and hated it and sold it back. But maybe I would like it now? Or at least not have to worry about whether my $14 was well-spent.

If you decide you want to hear more, Matador now has a 2-disc complete recordings thing called Better Days Will Haunt You that is really cheap and grebt.

i don't even know how to choose. i've listened to this album more than any other album.

Not as familiar with this one as I was Gone Glimmering, so I'll have to listen to it again. The video for "Unreal is Here" was awesome though.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 12 April 2010 16:43 (fourteen years ago) link

the video for "break up your band" off the first album is even better. It's my favorite music video of all time and probably the one I've reposted the most often. But here it is again:

Wow. This is such an amazing classic album. But I voted for Our Boys. Not that really any other song is any less good though.

Yeah, seeing that was what made me buy Gone Glimmering and then listen to it approximately a BILLION times.

You Must Be Stopped is awesome - it's their best song. those heavy math rock guitar chords and wild drumming over a very melodic GBV style tune is killing me.
Guard Attacks 2nd.

it's so perfect yet so tragic that there are 28 recorded chavez songs

call all destroyer, Monday, 12 April 2010 16:54 (fourteen years ago) link

...also the "All i wanna do is open my garage" part is a total WOW - with those bass and drums following the guitar line...

I love their practice of ending albums with the heaviest songs; "Relaxed Fit" off Gone Glimmering is a monster too.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 12 April 2010 16:58 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah,it's like an improved Nirvana tune

Zeno, Monday, 12 April 2010 16:59 (fourteen years ago) link

basically there is not a single thing about this band that is less than amazing.

call all destroyer, Monday, 12 April 2010 17:00 (fourteen years ago) link

i dunno, the singing could have a little more in it. that's my only problem with it

goole, Monday, 12 April 2010 17:13 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, was gonna say that the vocals are the only thing that keeps them from being a fave band in my book. Not that they're bad, but just not particularly great, either.

from wiki:The band reformed in 2006 playing three shows and as confirmed by guitarist Matt Sweeney are working on their third album.

is this true? the third album part.

mizzell, Monday, 12 April 2010 18:24 (fourteen years ago) link

That was four years ago. I'm tempted to think nothing ever came of it.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 12 April 2010 18:28 (fourteen years ago) link

their position all along has been that they're not "broken up" just busy with other stuff. i don't know if they've played since i drove nine hours round trip to see them in '06 tho

call all destroyer, Monday, 12 April 2010 18:53 (fourteen years ago) link

anyone else put this album on their freeform 90s ballot?

*crosses fingers*

jerk orbison (another al3x), Monday, 12 April 2010 20:44 (fourteen years ago) link

do you guys like this album more than gone glimmering? i like gg so much i barely ever listen to ride the fader.

mizzell, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:07 (fourteen years ago) link

funny, i never got around to picking it up.

goole, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:08 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah. it's more original, and has larger amount of great songs compared to GG

Zeno, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:10 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah gg has some really obvious highs but rtf is probably a little stronger overall--wider variety of songs too

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:11 (fourteen years ago) link

...also the shiny production wins.

but i like GG too!

Zeno, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:13 (fourteen years ago) link

I love both of them but I think Ride the Fader might be a little bit better.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Imagine Gone Glimmering with both sides of the first single on it (still under 40 minutes, no?)! Too many anthems, perhaps, but...

had the bit around 2:00 in "new room" going through my head all day - when the drums kick back from the break and then the guitar starts screaming. such a rush every time. no closer to narrowing this down otherwise, so that gets my vote.

FLIGHT 96!!!!

great album

Unreal Is Here has always really done it for me. Great for sunny days. Though Our Boys Will Shine Tonight has such a triumphant building climactic melody. Hard to make choices.

still find it awesome that "The Guard Attacks" was a featured BUZZ TRACK on my local alt-rock station, THE REVOLUTION 101.1

da croupier, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 23:05 (fourteen years ago) link

vote turnout doesn't bode well for the 90s poll... 4-way tie is indicative of the consistency here though i think. sad to see no votes for the badass middle tracks (tight around the jaws and lions). i feel like some metal band could cover them successfully.

who else voted for new room??

jerk orbison (another al3x), Thursday, 22 April 2010 02:57 (fourteen years ago) link

ha i didn't even vote.

goole, Thursday, 22 April 2010 03:01 (fourteen years ago) link

six years pass...

For some reason, a seller on discogs can't get rid of the vinyl reissue quick enough...
