I have heard people talk about this record a lot this year for some reason.

I assume it was rad the previous 30 years too, though. Seems like everyone discovered it at the same time.

When I first heard "Temporary Secretary" at an indie club in 2003, I knew this album's time had come.

"Temp Sec" is amazing, but it's all about the vocoder & conga break in "Goodnight Tonight". Wonderful album! McCartney I is pretty wonderful too!

top 10 easily. "check my machine" - bside of waterfalls - is wackiest thing recorded to tape. most of the bsides of those tracks are amazing

There was a bit remixing on some of the shortened tracks. The rest of the songs are probably identical to the released versions.

IMHO, most of the unreleased tracks were the obvious choices to drop when it became a single album. "Horseriders" is annoying, "Blue Sway" is bland, "Mr. H Atom" and "You Know I'll Get You Baby" might as well be instrumentals--both lyrics are two lines repeated over and over--although "Atom" chugs along nicely (and it's short), and "Bogey Wobble" doesn't live up to the deeply weird "Bogey Music."

fucking weird... i had a dream about this record last night (maybe the night before) and i've never knowingly heard anything on it except "coming up". i can't say i've read any ilx threads lately where it's been discussed in any great detail either.

"Check My Machine" was the first song he recorded on his new home recording console.
I like it's utilitarian nature.

goodnight tonight wasn't on this but it might be on the EMI reissue. I don't think it was from the same sessions; I know it was credited to wings, I can't tell if it was actually a solo recording or not.

It was a band recording, but, yeah, it was included on one of the reissues.

At least it contains "Waterfalls". That is something at least....

Never cared for it either. It sounds more primitive and half-assed than McCartney, actually (EVERYBODY BOGEY BOGEY BOGEY BOGEY).

I can see the novelty appeal but yeah it sounds really cheap and unimaginative, loads of pointless repetition, containing only the most skeletally sketched ideas.

"Bogey Music" is, in part, intentionally bad because it's supposed to be an exploitation record (the first record made for the emerging Bogey market). But McCartney is such a great craftsman that he also throws in that cool instrumental break. It's also quite chilling when he calls the Bogeys "suckers."

I don't understand that at all.

An excellent essay! It strikes the right note: baffled but awestruck. A few months ago my bud and I, listening to "Let'Em In" on satellite radio, marveled at how a song this determinedly ridiculous -- a song about a doorbell! with a doorbell sound! with military snares!! -- sailed into the Top Five.

Yeah I've been waiting for McCartney 3 for like ever. His #'d solo albums are the best.

j/k about disappointment obviously but I would have thought it would have been up your alley. Darkroom, Coming Up, Temp Secretary, Check My Machine are all classics imo and the ballads totally grew on me. I just think of it as a great four-tracky weird bedroom pop record.

the ballad on it are incredible obviously, waterfalls and one of these days are, I think, two of the best songs he ever wrote (that includes any of the beatles work). and the thin sound of the rest of it is exactly what is good about it.

Great essay by Taylor Parkes. I do like the sound of Paul's 70s life-style: happy family life, a sympathetic soul mate who he could make music and go horse-riding with, and being cheerfully bonged out at all times.

I think this might have been one of his happiest times. I remember seeing an interview where he was saying that in the late 70s the Beatles hysteria had died down in the UK - enough that he could get the train from Sussex to Charing Cross and walk to his office in Soho Square without much hassle. One John died the hysteria started up again and that free and easy moment disappeared forever.

never been a huge fan of this record ... and yet i'm considering downloading the double lp version on the octaner blog ... paul is sometimes at his best when he's at his most tossed off.

I'm just kidding. Mostly. A few years ago he came into the radio station my mom works at and was flirting with her, but she was recently divorced and didn't see the signs. She's got some of it recorded. He sang her happy birthday.

Haven't heard it in a while, but I remember listening to "Pipes of Peace" once in headphones and being super-impressed by the arrangement. (George Martin worked on that record, of course.)

Especially the bit toward the end, I think - is there a full orchestra on that?

I had "All the Best" as a kid, and I remember it started off great but halfway through really demonstrated why he was so hated, after the plunge into the most ultimate syrupy stupid lame cheesy pop you've ever heard in your life.

Ha, no way! Seems a bit weird to see 2015 McCartney (and his touring band) performing this song. It'd be great if he did a whole set of some of his more interesting post-Beatles numbers.

Actually really like that. His voice not being able to hit the high notes so much makes the chorus less annoying.
