california gurls

magic
your love is my drug

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 July 2010 18:46 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i posted about "magic" in the other thread

i think the hook is kind of killer tbh, just wish it wasn't sung by freakin rivers cuomo and padded out by worthless b.o.b. verses

he should've saved it for someone else and repackaged it

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 July 2010 18:47 (thirteen years ago) link

like, third single for KP maybe

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 July 2010 18:47 (thirteen years ago) link

u mad, "Hot N Cold" is killer

the two things that kill "hot n cold" for me

1 the beat is really thin and unappealing
2 the hooks is obvious in a way that he usually pulls off but for some reason it grates on me for this particular song

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 July 2010 18:51 (thirteen years ago) link

"the hooks is obvious"

this period of dr. luke was really, really awful but i think he's really redeemed himself of late

Lil Mama - "G-Slide (Tour Bus)"
Katy Perry - "I Kissed A Girl"
Katy Perry - "Hot N Cold"
Britney Spears - "Circus"
Flo Rida - "Right Round"
Kelly Clarkson - "My Life Would Suck Without You"
Miley Cyrus - "Party In The U.S.A."
Weezer - "I'm Your Daddy"
Adam Lambert - "For Your Entertainment"
Ke$ha - "Tik Tok"

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 July 2010 18:53 (thirteen years ago) link

wow i didn't realise dr luke's trajectory involved falling off like that - i dislike most of this list, but the three songs i love on it are right at the start, and i REALLY love them:

Kelly Clarkson - "Behind These Hazel Eyes"
The Veronicas - "4Ever"
Paris Hilton - "Nothing In This World"

it's kind of like he had one really good idea and since getting the most out of it, it's either been diminishing returns on it or just plain bad ideas. nb the two most recent k perry singles are probably some sort of upturn but i'm still not sure how down with them i am. also nb, i haven't heard those other veronicas songs, are they as good as "4ever"?

voting PARIS of course.

i'm prolley a cheeseball, but this is a pretty hard choice between Who Knew & Hot n Cold...

but seriously, three consecutive life sentences for I'm Your Daddy

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 18:58 (thirteen years ago) link

that Paris song really is great. i enjoy stuff like that and "Teenage Dream" that use the same tricks as his bombastic anthems but just glide along very gently.

imo "4Ever" is kind of shrill and monotonous and "Untouched and "When It All Falls Apart" are way way better

The chickbad from the ludicrous 'ludacris' song (some dude), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 18:58 (thirteen years ago) link

americans, you should probably hear "about you now" by the sugababes - it's pretty much in his soft rock mould and it was their last great song (and last song that anyone cared about, really):

decided to vote for "Who Knew," which has probably gotten me more emotional than any other pop hit in recent memory, and has the great narrative of totally missing the Hot 100 at first and then being re-released months and months later and finally breaking into the top 10

The chickbad from the ludicrous 'ludacris' song (some dude), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 19:01 (thirteen years ago) link

that Paris song really is great. i enjoy stuff like that and "Teenage Dream" that use the same tricks as his bombastic anthems but just glide along very gently.

yeah this applies to "about you now" too. there are a couple of other songs on the paris album that do pretty much the same thing, i'm surprised he didn't have a hand in "screwed" or "not leaving without you". (i still maintain that paris herself was pretty important to those songs' louche glide.)

avril's "girlfriend" and miley's "party in the usa" both fall into the category of songs i enjoyed the hell out of for two weeks but honestly feel a bit sick at the thought of listening to again.

"4Ever" for me, bloody great and one of the best songs of the period, period. The Veronicas - "Everything I'm Not" could actually place second. It's more Avril-ish and doesn't sound like 4Ever at all, but it's catchy beyond belief.

For what it's worth, aren't the majority of these co-writes/co-produces with Max Martin, among others (but mostly Max)? When doling out credit, I think I'd defer to that dude. Dr. Luke solo (more or less) has done, what, "Party in the USA" and "Tik Tok?" And those are among the most unctuous of the bunch.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 2 August 2010 12:04 (thirteen years ago) link

well, Max Martin did a lot of these songs, yeah, maybe half of them (mostly the earlier ones, plus the more recent Clarkson/Perry ones). I'm inclined to give Dr. Luke more credit for the tunes and the overall aesthetic here, since Martin hadn't been doing much of particular worth for a couple years before "Since U Been Gone," certainly nothing that sounded like it, and since then the only non-Dr. Luke hit he's had that has been anywhere near that good was "So What."

The chickbad from the ludicrous 'ludacris' song (some dude), Monday, 2 August 2010 12:47 (thirteen years ago) link

xp .. how is this list of songs even remotely comparable to neptunes '99-'05 ?

Aside from the fact that both producers charted with actual hits.. the similarities end there.

I get the suspicious feeling Martin just stared pawning his demos over to Luke for a polish. Like, per KLF's "The Manual," the only reason Max Martin stopped churning them out was because he got bored of the formula, not because he couldn't, and handing them over to Luke to finish has been his way around the creative burnout, like a lazily symbiotic relationship. 'Cause Luke without Martin (save maybe Flo Rida's "Right Round," which is think is a great production) sort of sucks.

iirc it's pretty much the opposite -- Dr. Luke did simple voice-and-guitar demos for songs like "Since U Been Gone" and "My Life Would Suck Without You," Martin's role was I think more in terms of studio polish and maybe fleshing out the compositions. why would Martin do big blocky synth pop songs for 5 years, and then suddenly start writing chugging guitar rock songs that happen to all have the same collaborator?

The challenge is there's really no control, i.e. much in the way of Dr. Luke all by himself. When I see the name of One of the Most Successful Producers of All Time in the credits, I give said producer the benefit of the doubt.

Dr. Luke’s highest-profile single this year, for Jennifer Lopez, was met with immediate backlash; a song crediting him has not reached the Top 10 this year.

this is consistent with Luke seeming to get less and less high-profile work over the past few years (it's weird that people cite the J. Lo single as the beginning; this has been happening for several years), though it's hard to say how much of that is blackballing, how much of that is contractual necessities, and how much of that is simple changing tastes. and... like, it's a J. Lo single, it isn't going to reach the Top 10

Changing tastes? Dr. Luke and Max Martin have been ruling the pop music landscape for (checks the release date of "Baby One More Time") seventeen years! And they will doubtless continue churning out hits for seventeen more years. They will never go away.

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 21 October 2016 22:51 (seven years ago) link

this is the weirdest fucking take -- denniz pop died in 1998, and virtually all of britney's early-career hits (post-"baby one more time") and most of the backstreet boys and 'n sync's hits were produced by max martin afterward. not sure it's worth rewriting history to play captain save-a-luke

after max's mentor denniz pop died, max struggled to make hits consistently until he joined forces with luke. luke has a great ear for fresh sounds coming from outside the mainstream and a total lack of shame when it comes to appropriating them. they were scammers, not masters
