So will this be good?

Honeydew, Friday, 30 July 2010 22:19 (thirteen years ago) link

hoping it has a similar dark vibe as the avey/ d. grubbs split 12" on fat cat

mizzell, Friday, 30 July 2010 22:27 (thirteen years ago) link

if it's as good as his only other solo release (split w/David Grubbs) then I'll be happy. xpost!

nice album art

Honeydew, Friday, 30 July 2010 22:29 (thirteen years ago) link

the Paw Tracks blurb is as silly as you'd expect:

Down There is a world of nine new songs from Animal Collective's Avey Tare. His first official solo full length carries you through a murky world of sound, an alien death world of soul grooves that is both honest and otherworldly. Wait for sundown and turn it up loud. Take a ride on this haunted boat and let yourself be guided through deep sloshy rhythms, waterlogged bass, and moonlit breaks in the canopy that reveal a crisp crystalline pop buzz. Down There was recorded in the month of June by old friend Josh Dibb (Deakin) at the Good House, an old church in upstate New York, surrounded by The Great Swamp and visited regularly by monks, white widows, and groan toads.

but through the silliness I like the sound of it.

mizzell, Saturday, 31 July 2010 01:35 (thirteen years ago) link

has this leaked or just an announcement?

Bee OK, Saturday, 31 July 2010 01:46 (thirteen years ago) link

The title brings back horrible memories of his "sexy songs" on the last few AC albums...

seandalai, Saturday, 31 July 2010 02:21 (thirteen years ago) link

Why did mittens have to leave??

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Saturday, 31 July 2010 03:38 (thirteen years ago) link

mittens has been banned permanently.

please do not make sockpuppet accounts to slather unbelievably stupid trolling shit all over the boards.

looks like i took the wrong week to be absent on ilm.

last sentence is mine, the other two from somewhere else on this board.

haha, title sounds like something one of the Sex And The City girls would lean in and say to one another

krippendorf's trife (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 31 July 2010 10:06 (thirteen years ago) link

That solo track he did for Esopus magazine--Judy Biworker--was nice, along the same lines as the Fat Cat split. Sedate vocals, creepy vibe.

kmhyde, Sunday, 1 August 2010 17:19 (thirteen years ago) link

seriously dislike the art. reminds me of 90's action figure artwork for whatever reason.

um okay (kelpolaris), Monday, 2 August 2010 01:51 (thirteen years ago) link

is this the beginning of the end of AC?

Zeno, Monday, 2 August 2010 09:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Don't see why it would be - this is hardly the first AC solo album/sideproject.

seandalai, Monday, 2 August 2010 09:56 (thirteen years ago) link

of course it's just a vague speculation but - Avey Tare writes 80% of AC songs, so why not recording it as an AC album with the guys?
(unless it's yet another set of weird experimentaions like the album he did with his wife)
and it's his first solo album too.

SourPatchCorpse, Saturday, 9 October 2010 19:43 (thirteen years ago) link

is it good?

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 9 October 2010 19:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Tough question. I'm halfway through my first listen. Let's put it this way, I haven't been compelled to stop the album. There's a ton of WTF moments, and a few "oh, that's kinda awesome" moments. It has a vibe, that's for sure. I can see myself trying to unlock it.

SourPatchCorpse, Saturday, 9 October 2010 19:54 (thirteen years ago) link

nothing too groundbreaking here - it sounds more or less like a mellower, blurrier, more electronic version of Feels.
nothing as strong as Banshee Beat etc.. but still a pleasent enough record.

Zeno, Saturday, 9 October 2010 20:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Heads Hammock and Lucky 1 are great. Still haven't listened the rest but looks pretty good. I don't know. I'm not an AC fan neither a hater but these two tracks really caught my attention

Shin Oliva Suzuki, Saturday, 9 October 2010 21:29 (thirteen years ago) link

the fake leak is better

Zeno, Monday, 11 October 2010 10:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Yes, I was going to say that. Is the fake leak 60 Watt Kid?

Shin Oliva Suzuki, Monday, 11 October 2010 14:37 (thirteen years ago) link

the last song, "lucky 1," is the only one that caught my attention

kamerad, Monday, 11 October 2010 15:07 (thirteen years ago) link

i've only heard "lucky 1" and the synths are cool (esp the stereo panning), but if this is the best thing on the album then ugh.

This one joins the Liars album from earlier this year in the "cheap, minimal" packaging camp. Look, I understand that "no one" is buying physical albums these days, but skimping on the packaging to the absolute bare minimum certainly isn't going to help reverse that trend.

Liars album also had a deluxe version iirc

dmr, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 03:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, it did, but that doesn't mean the "regular" version should be just a disc in a cardboard sleeve with absolutely no liner notes or anything.

Anyway, this album. Sounds pretty decent on first listen, but I'm not sure how long it will stick.
