(couldn't find a thread)so this came out in 2010. haven't heard the previous s/t, but this is some pretty nice sonic youth/velvet underground-ripoff material. lots of nice textures/atmospheres, and sort of "no wave" riffage? some tracks literally sound like a male nico singing atop sy-type soundzones, and others have cale-esk viola cries.. there are two vocalists, i guess they're brothers.lamentable moniker?

Christopher Reimer of Calgary indie rock band Women dies
Postmedia News Feb 21, 2012 – 11:42 PM ET | Last Updated: Feb 21, 2012 11:45 PM ET
The Calgary music scene was in mourning Tuesday with news that Christopher Reimer, guitarist for local noise-pop band Women, passed away in his sleep.
Women, who had released two albums to great acclaim, had been on indefinite hiatus for more than a year since the release of their last album, Public Strain.
The group had toured the world and performed with acts ranging from Mogwai to Wire.
The cause of Reimer’s passing as well as funeral arrangements have not been announced yet.

Christopher Reimer, guitarist for Calgary noise pop favourites Women and a former member of experimental outfit Azeda Booth, passed away in his sleep today (February 21). The sad news of the musician's death comes via the Calgary Herald, but it's as yet unknown how the young musician died.
Reimer (far right in the photo above) started playing guitar and keyboards in Azeda Booth in 2006 and formed Women in 2007 with fellow Azeda member Mike Wallace and brothers Patrick and Matthew Flegel. Shortly after the troupe issued their self-titled debut, which blended elements ranging from indie to Krautrock to psychedelia and '60s pop, Reimer and Wallace chose to focus on Women full time.
Women went on tour around the world and produced an equally acclaimed follow-up, Public Strain, in the fall of 2010. Shortly after the album dropped, however, the band seemingly imploded while on tour at a performance in Victoria, BC, which apparently erupted into an onstage fist fight. The group have not played since then, but are said to be on an indefinite hiatus.
Neither the band's label Flemish Eye nor Women themselves have yet issued a statement about Reimer's death, and funeral arrangements have not been made public.
__________________________________________________________________________________________I'd not known that's why Women had been quiet for so long (the onstage fistfight and immediate hiatus). Still, sad to see musicians keep dying so young.

Man, what sad news. This band was great, one of the few bands of the last 5 years or so that has grown in my esteem the more I listen to their records. Had high hopes that there would be another record that might even top "Public Strain". Of course, I just hope the other members and there families are holding up, a real shame.

Absolutely love this song, imagine I still will in 10 years. Something mysterious and special about their sound:

"drag open" is great, too. first i ever heard em was walking into a record shop during the latter part of "china steps," in a record shop. had to get it. such a nicely crafted record. can't get into the van gaalen stuff so much (lacks the roughness)

Only now noticed that Pat is in a new band, Cindy Lee (after Fels-Naptha and Androgynous Mind), and they put a tape out at the end of last year. Only through it once so far, but pretty good and out there. Holding the Devil's Hand stands out so far.

Any love for Viet Cong? Gonna give "Cassette" a listen today. This song rubs me the right way:

Hah Global, good to see you here. I love "Public Strain", so I would be willing to give any new project a chance. Will check that out today.

This album is good.

it is good. a lot of the trebly/spiky interlocking guitar parts that i loved about women, maybe more like a 70s british punk thing going, i dunno. more pop moments early on. love the noisier later stuff (structureless design, select your drone). looking forward to hearing more stuff though. hope that track on the soundcloud comes out on something

Yeah man digging that "Bunker Buster" song a bunch. Kinda guitar band I can totally get behind. Good trick to pull both in Women and this band is how they manage to make off-kilter knotty riffs seem really unforced and catchy as hell (at least to me).

It's not very cohesive but I like pretty much all the songs. "Select Your Drone" is great, the first part reminds me of "Before I Lose My Style" by the Space Needle which is one of my all-time favorite songs.

Also reminds me of a more lo-fi/punk Enon, oddly enough, might just be the affected accent.

Cool, I like that Space Needle song as well, though I haven't heard it in ages. Still, will dig deeper with this Viet Cong stuff at some point. Don't like the vocals as much as Women, but maybe it'll grow on me. The guitars are mainly what I am after though.

viet cong - continental strain
is straight up lansing-dreiden, but forgiven because it's more or less just as good as lansing-dreiden

i don't know how much it's worth but i think Women will be remembered for being one of the only unique rock bands of this era.
both records are classic...
and it's so much more than "sonic youth/velvet underground-ripoff material"

i could go on and on about this band but suffice to say i agree, their music is going to hold up.
― call all destroyer, Monday, 8 June 2015 23:17 (eight years ago) link
there's just so many genres they blended together. it's more than post-punk even. there's elements of post-hardcore, math rock, minimalism, art rock etc
they were a little bit genius, it needs to be said.
I don't think anybody's topped Public Strain since it came out

rip women
lucky to have seen them a couple times

saw Cindy Lee last night, heard some of my favorite live guitar ever. also loved the insistence on separating the guitar playing (seated) from the singing (standing w/out guitar), to the point of multiple quick transitions per song. a lot of it had the air of a staged rehearsal, Cindy Lee the great improviser.

I'll freely admit that Women/Viet Cong/Pre-Occupations/whatever didn't do much for me at the time and I even lived in Calgary when they were very much a thing (maybe I should revisit?) but this new album really is something special

great record. having a hard time getting ‘kingdom come’ out of my head
― devvvine, Friday, 5 April 2024 07:35 (one month ago) link
It's hard to describe beyond being an eerie '60s slowdance genre pastiche, but it's done in a way that feels so spare and so tender and hollowed-out and *sustained* that it really connects for me. It just keeps hitting these dark parts of my mind in sweet, unsettling ways. Naked. Or voyeuristic. Or something up that dark metaphorical alleyway.

i'm sorry to admit i've cooled considerably on this since first listen. idk, maybe because it's super long? i'm afraid to listen to it a third time now

seems about right
Cindy Lee - Diamond Jubilee answers the question what if the most faded 50s girl group / post-punk band forgotten by history played a sock hop in the town from Blue Velvet & introduced the villagers to guitar tones & krautrock jams that would kill a Victorian child— Good Willsmith (@GoodWillsmith) April 5, 2024
should I start a new thread about this album
