Matt pointed me at it and I downloaded it:
http://thirdworlds.net/
and me and the gal like it a lot! Might be a passing fancy but curious what ilxhivemind thinks
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaE8cMt_8iU
lyrics are stone cold stupid but the energy is manic, the production is lo-fi punk shit and the ideas are omnivorously informed and twitching
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBO5PbpDPng
dash of aphex, little horrorcore, some industrial, some disco... aesthetically it's all over the place and scratches an itch i was not aware i wanted scratched?

My friend and I watched this from forks' inexplicable thread last night and she tried to download the mixtape but it made her browser crash when she used the internet at the same time. She said, "everyone's talking about this on facebook," and I said, " 'everybody'? How can it be everybody? This video only has 21,000 views and it's his most-viewed video," and she said, "okay, not EVERYBODY. Like two or maybe three people posted the video, "and I said, "still, that's pretty impressive when you consider the ratio of 21,000 to the population of the unites states. This is probably gonna get big. Like, indie big, maybe," and she said, "Yeah, maybe."

love this shit. thanks forks.
yeah, mostly about the energy, like he just can't shout loud enough or bang hard enough.
some tasty musical action too. guilotine is a jam. not one sound more than it needs. works those bleeps just perfect.
also digging culture shock, like the flipside to lilb's age of information.

although it's a lot more punk rock + a bunch of other things, i definitely get a shabazz palaces vibe at times (mostly in the lyrics + flow, like on "culture shock" for ex).

finding death grope a lot more enjoyable & fun than any of those precedents. like it sounds like it ought to feel oppressively angry and "harsh", but it doesn't. good times album imo.

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Thursday, 12 May 2011 00:08 (twelve years ago) link

no but seriously: I think the 2xLP-with-half-leaked-in-advance could be a surprisingly good marketing strategy for bands in Death Grips' position (rabid fanbase, restless musicians) to basically cash in their chips -- "here's a free half-hour of the experimental shit that might alienate you; btw you're still paying for it whether you like it or not when the proper album drops"

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 13:44 (nine years ago) link

in closing, there is no way in hell I would pay for tix to a Death Grips (RIP) show unless I could literally see the band standing in front of me as I handed over my credit card

lol nice. year of the snitch was probably my most listened-to album of the year. it didn't bowl me over at first, but its endless parade of off-the-wall ideas--coupled with its uniformly hazy, blunted sonics--kept pulling me back in. i don't think i've seen it on a single year-end list :(

flopson, Monday, 9 December 2019 02:01 (four years ago) link

I should have absorbed more DG by now. Really, really, really liked The Powers That B or whatever the two-disc thing was officially called. The juxtaposition of the two not-very-similar discs somehow added something in itself. I even bought a physical copy fercrissakes, which is noteworthy for me nowadays.

But I have no recollection of hearing the stuff since then, nor NLDW for that matter. I've no real excuse...
