"swagger jagger" has leaked, i'm sure you can find it if you want. it interpolates "oh my darling clementine" and sounds a bit fergie, a bit gwen stefani, a bit lil mama. i like it fine (albeit possibly not in my fever/migraine-addled state today) but the other tracks i've heard from her are much better (and less gimmicky).

Sounds like someone's playing a stylophone in the background. It drags a bit in the middle. The chorus would probably be better in her baby-screwface-rapping voice.

The rap seems a bit pointless to the song but overall this is a million times better than Swagger Jagger.

Yeah I finally heard the full version of that too, I love it. Hopefully that will be the third single.

I love that in the hands of anyone else this could have been an insipid Bruno Mars type track but she grounds it in enough personality and charisma to make so much more than that.

i quite like this. i've loved her since that first audition. and you're on the mark about it being 1,000,000 times than that other song. also: she should've done the rap, she's a good rapper!

I'm kind of surprised Turn my Swag on isn't on the album. I never understood why she didn't ever do it on the show again. Pretty sure if she'd done it on the semi finals that might have got just that little bit further.

yes! it's a remarkably fat-free, coherent affair - and SO much character in it, all her ad libs and vocal tics are so irresistible - it's like every time there's a ropy bit (and there are a few) she just rides roughshod over it and seizes your attention back.

i can't believe that even the "buffalo stance" song works: that should be such a no-no but it's actually amazing. maybe because it almost sounds like the x factor god performance that she never got to do in the live shows (well ok apart from "stay" and "no diggity").

um anyway yeah delete "swagger jagger" and everything else is basically kind of amazingly great.

You're right about Playa Boi, it shouldn't work but totally does. Surprised how much I like Over The Moon, thought it kinda sounded annoying from the samples but it's great. Superhero is my favourite song by a long way but that's just because that's just a perfect song.

I think a couple of her other X Factor performances were pretty great too. Stay was the obvious highlight but I also loved Just Be Good To Me and Nothin' On You. Her ad libs on Nothin' On You were especially amazing.

Lex I can't help but feel that if this came from some other Sound of 2011 or Popjustice type you'd be seething with hatred for it. Her vocal tics mostly sound like Lily Allen or Marina and the Diamonds fwiw.

I'm only as far as the Viva La Vida one and it mostly just feels like standard issue post-Xenomania kitchen sink pop to me? I admire its energy and enthusiasm but her on-record persona is SO ANNOYING half the time - can't help but wish for more chipmunk rapping really, it's by miles the best look on he

Haha I've just got to the one that attempts to fuse Christmassy jinglebell pop with brostep, not sure it quite works but all credit to them for giving it a go.

As you can see from that paragraph the Xmassy brostep one stopped me in my tracks.

The one after that, the grimey one with Ghetts, is by miles the best thing I've heard so far. There's an element of 'chuck everything in and see what sticks' here isn't there? But no other X-Factor star would put Ghetts on a song, in a million years.

The attempt to write a Rihanna ballad is straight in the 'doesn't come off' pile though.

Finished now, strange album, kind of feels like a composite of everything that's happened in pop in like four years - there's a big slice of Paper Planes in the middle of With Ur Love.

Maybe my knee jerked a bit hard in the first instance because the first two tracks and the first ballad are comfortably the worst things here*. Second half's a lot better.

*Except Swagger Jagger which I obviously deleted on sight.

her tics are way more nicki minaj than marina - face-pulling brattiness rather than middle-class affected quirk. allen, i'll give you that especially when cher's doing carefree, but there's no mockney, which was always allen's greatest sin. i'm not sure i hate lily allen any more, anyway.

anyway i mean amazing things like VROOM-VR-VR-VROOM in the middle of "play boi" (which is a missy move, if anything), the flirta d noise she makes throughout "want u back" etc

I can't stand the affectations on the first few songs. I'm amazed that a girl of Cher's background has managed to make herself sound like middle class faux-quirky mockney then. I blame the producers.

have no idea how the US version of the album fares vs. the UK version but i find it pretty delightful that Mike Posner's vocals have been excised from the song he was on

i find that hilarious too (and so glad they did it, finally a version of that song i can listen to without flinching)

i think they took off "dub on the track" (on the basis that americans won't get grime?) and "over the moon" (oddly), replaced them with the three new tracks - "oath" (the single, pretty good), "behind the music" (forgettable on one listen) and "riot!" (AMAZING)

Love this new single. Shame her career in the UK seems to have just about disappeared.

Did she ever really happen in the US? I heard "With Ur Love" on the radio a few times but don't get the sense she's really broken through on this side of the big pond.

Tough to say how much she broke through. With Ur Love almost made the top 10 and hung around for ages selling something like 2 million copies which sounds like a lot to me. They released Oath as a follow up which didn't really do a lot but the album still went top 10. I thought this new single would be another hit for her but it's done nothing on US itunes.

I think in the UK most people have forgotten about her now. I Wish has had zero radio play so far and has been pushed back until November (probably so they can her on X Factor that week) I'm still annoyed they didn't put out Superhero singe as a single at any point, it's still her best song by a mile.

It was "I Want U Back" that was the smash US hit (#12, double platinum), not "With Ur Love".
I loved "Beautiful People" off the album, that would have been a great single too.

although i can't recognise where KYU KYU comes from. It's almost as good as her helicopter noises.

It's finally out in the UK next week, no slot on X Factor for her though as they've got to make room for Robbie Williams and Celine Dion!

And the single has been cancelled. Think she's pretty much done in the UK now. She seems to be unable to get another hit in the US too.

"dirty love" has a pretty massive chorus but the production is really brash and kind of off-putting. "sirens" is kind of tame and not special at all. "human" is a pretty fucking epic/sweeping/dramatic Big Ballad! without a doubt my fave from the album so far is "bind your love" tho:

it's pretty unassuming at first but has taken over my life now. the melodies are so light and beautiful.

Yeah Bind Your Love is great and probably my favourite song from the album so far, just ahead of I Wish. Shame this album will completely flop.

Ooh I hadn't been into the previous singles but Bind Your Love is v nice. I'm not super enthused about the overall direction but with the right songs she could def make it work

i see i didn't really post in this thread after the album came out but it's really grown into one of my favourite albums of the year. she kills those power ballads. it feels very vulnerable and fragile and kinda depressive for a major label pop album; i'd sort of file it somewhere near kelly clarkson's my december maybe? i guess i haven't talked about it much because it feels like such a lost cause trying to get anyone to care but it's a strong personal favourite.

(and in terms of big(ish) pop artists, this is one of the few total triumphs of the year so far *stares at ariana in disappointment*)

Not really. The album briefly hit the top 20 then was gone. She's mostly known for that Demi Lovato number (Demi's best song imo) which went big, but Cher didn't really bring much to that.

It reached number 21 in the UK but dropped out of the top 100 after one week. Sirens missed the top 40 by one place. Doubt there will be anymore singles from the album anywhere now. Really she needs to put out Bind Your Love and go on X Factor to perform it but that's not very likely. They've not tried to push her in the UK since the first album came out for some reason. Agree with Lex that this has grown to be one of my favourite albums of the year.

Top 3 of the year for me! I can't express how much I love Human.

X Factor final weekend inspired me to finally listen to this album and it's really good! Far better than its low profile would make it seem.
