CLUSTER / Moebius & Roedelius solo & group recordings 1970-1986 poll

I might not be voting in this one, I just want to look at the list

Plenty of good moments from both of them after 1986 but it is a clear dividing line

impossible.

nerve_pylon, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 00:11 (twelve years ago) link

& just to shortcircuit all those Ax Geinrich fans, yes the Supersession record is cool but were you really going to vote for it

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 00:12 (twelve years ago) link

ha ha

geeta, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 00:13 (twelve years ago) link

& I did forget two! tarnation

Cluster - Live Metz 23-9-77 (bootleg)
Cluster & Farnbauer - Live in Vienna 1980

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 00:18 (twelve years ago) link

i totally knew this was a milton thread

geeta, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 00:21 (twelve years ago) link

my first poll

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 00:24 (twelve years ago) link

i consider myself a fan and i've only heard like a third of these

frogbs, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 00:26 (twelve years ago) link

I never vote in polls, but I had to weigh in here. I knew it could potentially encompass hours upon hours of tortured overthought, so I just went with my gut. Of course, I kicked myself about 5-6 other records within seconds of doing so.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 28 September 2011 00:27 (twelve years ago) link

I have about 70% of these records. i am pretty sure that Milton has them all

never heard of farnbauer! who was he?

geeta, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 00:28 (twelve years ago) link

I have about 80% of them on LP, all of them again on CD.

to the best of my knowledge Farnbauer is a percussionist who played one concert with Cluster! not the tightest rhythmically but plays some mean atmospherics. it came out on cassette, reissued two years ago on Important, as an improv concert it wanders a bit but the 25 minute track 'Metalle' is worth the wait

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 00:45 (twelve years ago) link

durch die wuste is pretty good

frogbs, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 00:47 (twelve years ago) link

Selbstportrait II been my favorite lately, but yeah, I've heard maybe half of these.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 00:52 (twelve years ago) link

Actually, I've heard most of them, but only own a couple. Not made of money!

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 00:53 (twelve years ago) link

rastakraut pasta, double cut, and zero set are later ones i have enjoyed but it's still all about zuckerzeit and sowieso for me

mizzell, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 01:20 (twelve years ago) link

Inclusion of Harmonia makes this poll totally impossible so I haven't even considered voting

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 02:21 (twelve years ago) link

Seconded.

International Waters, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 02:24 (twelve years ago) link

dronestreet, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 03:26 (twelve years ago) link

Tonspuren is the sleeper here.

nerve_pylon, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 03:38 (twelve years ago) link

Voted sowieso but looking forward to seeing what the rest of you recommend as I've only heard about ten of these

I am using your worlds, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 03:45 (twelve years ago) link

I only know about 7 of these - voted Deluxe.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 05:22 (twelve years ago) link

forgot the umlaut in 'Wüste' - this poll totally needs to be redone

geeta, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 05:23 (twelve years ago) link

This poll is cruel. Cruel! I'll probably vote for "Deluxe" or "Zuckerzeit". Extremely fond of the Liliental album too though. Then there's the solo albums. Blimey.

Juice Should Be Sterliized (Tom D.), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 08:40 (twelve years ago) link

xp - yeah I was wondering, is that a different album? I would have voted differently

frogbs, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 13:13 (twelve years ago) link

Okay, I voted.

My favorite record on that list is far-and-away Harmonia's Deluxe. That said, I feel it's more of a Rother & Co. record and not a Cluster record.

So I voted Cluster II. I can still remember the first time I heard it, in the dead of winter, driving on a mostly empty highway late at night. Perfectly mind-blowing listen...like hearing the frequencies of a distant planet.

sowiesoso is all time obv but wenn der südwind weht got me thru this last week so voted that. LOTTA options though. rodelius is playing in atlanta soon, obv i'm going - anyone seen him lately?

balls, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 16:44 (twelve years ago) link

>This poll is cruel. Cruel!

yes, should have had 'they are as alike as trees and best considered as a whole' option

there are really only about 4 or 5 of them that haven't been my favorite at some point. even the ones that seemed slight at first, I keep coming back to. and the main albums all sound so radically different from each other and yet you can always tell it's them within seconds

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 16:47 (twelve years ago) link

yes, should have had 'they are as alike as trees and best considered as a whole' option

totally
why choose? it's like choosing which tropical fruit i like best. i like them all -- they are tropical fruit!

i guess i marginally prefer solo roedelius to solo moebius, but i prefer them together overall

black metal version of "the boy with the thorn in his side" (Edward III), Thursday, 29 September 2011 21:21 (twelve years ago) link

seriously considering voting for harmonia live '74. god, it's so good.

original bgm, Thursday, 29 September 2011 21:54 (twelve years ago) link

Amazing how hard it is for everyone to choose -- myself included. Has any outfit assembled such a diverse yet consistently innovative catalogue? I mean, in addition to those already mentioned, I'd rep for the piano loops of Wie Das Wisperen Der Winde almost as much as, say, Harmonia Live '74.

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 29 September 2011 23:32 (twelve years ago) link

love love love Jardin au Fou, but I still don't really know what to vote for.

Might go with that just so it gets a nod, though these Harmonia records. Man.

kraudive, Friday, 30 September 2011 00:03 (twelve years ago) link

>so I can't vote kluster & friends huh

no M or R on any of those. was a little tweaked by Schnitzler using the Kluster name to release music by the band that at the time was known as Eruption, but the music on that box was consistently good and admittedly sounded in the same vein as Kluster.

I was tempted to make this a 68-86 poll to include the Human Being record, and probably should have

got the Wasser Im Wind CD last night, which sounds a lot clearer than the fuzzy transfer Roedelius was selling from his website for years, but y'know what I think I prefer the fuzzy transfer. that album was the first one with acoustic instruments like sax & violin & I think I liked it more when it was harder to tell that was the case, although he's still in Selbstportrait melody-writing mode

>Has any outfit assembled such a diverse yet consistently innovative catalogue?

No

Was listening to stuff on random and "Legende" came up; what an incredible (and way too short!) piece that one was. are any of the later roedeliuses worth diving into?

frogbs, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:49 (eleven years ago) link

the electronic arrangement of Legende, Alle Jahre Wieder, on Selbstportrait II is even better

all the Roedelius albums on this poll are pretty lovable, I think I mutter about some of the latterdays on the Roedelius thread

thought i'd heard all the crucial roedelius stuff but only now just got around to this one. really his best of the solo piano works. apparently its a tribute to his mother

I bought that on iTunes -- there's something funky going on with that record. I can't tell if it's that the record is multitracked, edited together with loops or if he is using a long delay on his piano.

recently got the Bureau B reissue of 'Sowiesoso', which is the first CD edition to restore the first minute of the title track which has been missing from every digital edition since the 90's Sky one. It's so good to hear the long slow build all the way through again. They didn't finesse some of the crispy distortions out of some of the surges the way they did with the Water reissue, but I like it, the fry is supposed to be there, sounds like the original wafer-thin vinyl.

if your mp3 is 7:20 and not 8:11, totally worth rectifying
