haha i went to youtube to get that cfcf remix!!! one friday i cut out of work early and went to the park and drank tallboys and listened to this song on my phone while i waited for my friends to show up and watched the sun sit in the treetops and was glad summer was coming

Lamp, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 16:50 (eleven years ago) link

The first thing I heard from them was ALL WE FUCKING CARE ABOUT IS KPOP WHITEHOUSE AND OUR CATS which is basically a K-pop mixtape. I really like their democratic approach to influences. I guess its kind of a played out aesthetic ("post-internet" or whatever)but they bring a personal touch that I really like.

haha me too i think i listened to it because it was p much the best mixtape title ever. i dont think the aesthetic is that played out tho and i think theyre p grounded in the 90s revival mindset idk

max, Sunday, 3 June 2012 12:51 (eleven years ago) link

I'm a fan! Kinda bummed that I missed their previous shows in mpls, although I remember reading an interview or something with one of the guys in EG where he claimed lots of people hated them live, so maybe they've changed/improved their live show recently? I hope they do more shows here before they inevitably move to NYC as all bands that "make it" apparently must do

Dan I., Monday, 4 June 2012 20:17 (eleven years ago) link

originally they were gonna do this funny elite gymnastics karaoke thing (complete with squaresoft style title screen) but the guy tripped over the cable so they just had a bunch of strobes and they gave out flowers, i dug it

max, Monday, 4 June 2012 20:21 (eleven years ago) link

i still need to investigate these guy more, and like dan i'm finding out about them after they've done a spate of local shows.

i have zero idea what scene these guys are connected to here. there is a small waved-out + frankendance scene here, and i'm pretty sure i recognize one of the dudes from knocking into me on the floor at one of those events

Pitchfork: What's the music scene like in Minneapolis?

JB: There isn't a scene. I feel like we wouldn't really fit in wherever we lived. We're just really weird people interested in really weird things. We have cats and girlfriends and sometimes we like to go to this torta place because they make really good tortas. As far as we're concerned, our musical home is the internet-- our points of view, lyrical style, and writing style all come from there.

they have a mix called "I Want a 38-Minute Truce During Which There Is No Rape mix" after the dworkin speech

another song they said "that song was about the male gaze. this next song is about how people who smoke cigarettes are fucking retarded."

Fuck real life.

Dan I., Wednesday, 15 August 2012 22:28 (eleven years ago) link

Their visual aesthetic was one of the best things about them, and I guess the guy that left was responsible mostly for the visuals and very little for the music. That seems like something I've heard of other bands doing (having a visual artist who does all the album covers and other visual stuff and who is considered a full member of the band), but I can't think of any other examples right now. It would probably be insulting to compare it to Bez, but maybe kind of like a Terry Gilliam in Monty Python thing?

Dan I., Wednesday, 15 August 2012 22:40 (eleven years ago) link

Errr.. drawing analogies to Terry Gilliam might be stretching. As much as I hate to admit it, they definitely have struck me as a Tumblr band, if that's how you're reading the visual aesthetic.

women, man. can't they just listen to a guy who's trying to help

maura, Friday, 2 August 2013 22:37 (ten years ago) link

haha yeah I love how this guy follows up his weak garbled male appropriation of women's experiences by asking "why do I have no voice in this discussion?" to a group of women who have actual insightful things to say

staind in the place where you live (crüt), Friday, 2 August 2013 22:45 (ten years ago) link

maybe we should send him a link to our "death of the author" discussion so he gets that interpretation doesn't mean the lyricist telling you exactly what the lyrics are supposed to mean

carlos danger zone (mh), Friday, 2 August 2013 22:51 (ten years ago) link

obviously cant speak for the guy (of whose music i am a big fan so, idk, im biased i guess!) but the post he made immediately after the first 'wave' of controversy more or less seemed to imply that the song was about his own experience of (being) sexual(ly) assault(ed). he didnt come out and say that, so if youre really cynical maybe you assume hes just trying to imply that, or hes trying to weasel out or whatever. but id be wary at least for now of saying hes appropriating womens experiences.

other than that, idk, i have nothing to say really besides, huh.

this guy and grimes are frustrating because they're on point a lot of the time and obviously have a lot of shit to say, much of which is really important and timely, but when i read their tumblr posts they're so rambling and ill-thought-through (or overthought) and when i listen to their music i just want to turn it off because it str8-up sucks so much (elite gymnastics even more than grimes b/c i hear nothing of note going on there at all)

seems like people aren't really trying to give this guy any benefit of the doubt because stuff like this i think comes off pretty well:

And so, "On Fraternity" — it's called "On Fraternity." I don't want women to hear it and not be able to relate to it. I don't want to tell any of the women who are listening to it that your reaction to it, positive or negative, is not valid. But the purpose of "On Fraternity," in the context of the EP especially, is to call out my male peers for creating a situation where other people are victimized. I totally failed to do that. I guess if there was any reaction I was expecting, it was that the people, especially in the music industry, who are doing this stuff that's upsetting me would have a problem with it.

usic for 18 magicians (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:30 (ten years ago) link

How else could it be framed?
Even just singing about the rape experience, that's another weird thing that's hard to talk about. Obviously women are much more vulnerable, and it's perpetrated against them much more than other demographics, but the rape experience doesn't belong to women. It's my place as a survivor of sexual assault to sing about that if I want to. I don't want to make that a big issue, because the point of "On Fraternity," like I said before, was to call out other men for creating a situation where victimization is enabled, and the silence that allows victimizers to run around and act with impunity is also something that my peers in the music industry perpetuate. So I don't want to make it about me, like, "Oh, it's about my rape experience." But it's not like I wrote those lines from a place of complete ignorance. The fact that so many people assumed that, based on my race and my gender or whatever minimal biographic information people know about me? That was the roughest part of it.
