A$AP ROCKY's top 25 albums

http://www.complex.com/music/2012/01/asap-rockys-25-favorite-albums

a disappointingly uninteresting top 25 albums from A$AP. his reasons for liking most of the albums are so uninspiring.. most of them are because he likes a few songs on them. i would have thought he would have a lot more to say.

"Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stadium Arcadium (2006)
A$AP Rocky: "That had 'Dani California' on it. I liked it because it was rock and it was something different for me.""

he said in that GQ interview that john lennon and jimi hendrix were his favourite artists, but this is all he could say about the jimi hendrix album he chose:

"I like Jimi Hendrix. I know that sounds cliché. I like 'All Along The Watchtower,' 'Hey Joe,' 'Purple Haze,' 'Voodoo Child,' everything. That nigga's the shit."

he didnt even mention a beatles or a john lennon album. he's probably never even really listened to the beatles...

FINALLY.. any of you guys seen that video with ASAP rocky and danny brown interviewing eachother by the pool? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qMAzn4s1_g)
rocky has literally nothing to say about anything, not even his own music. danny brown starts raving about jimmi hendrix towards the end and rocky, unsuprisingly, has nothing to say. he hadn't even listened to the album he was talking about. so much for him being his favourite artist??

OK i love rocky.. man, i saw him the other week (although, half of his songs he rapped over the full vocal studio recording). but it really disappoints me that he has absolutely nothing to say, and that hes fronting on his music preferences- it shows there is no depth to the man whatsoever. perhaps i was just expecting too much... sometimes the reality of an artists you like is a bitch ha.. anyone have any thoughts on this?

cant believe disappointing, uninteresting, uninspiring rapper A$AP Rocky has a disappointing, uninteresting, uninspiring list of favorite records

i heard the list seems cooler if you read it really slowly

the list isnt that bad, mostly just notable millenial gangsta rap

if he didnt spend much time listening to full length albums then he shouldn't put out a top 25 albums like he's some eclectic mother fucker. it just makes him look really ignorant, and like they are the only 25 albums he's ever listened to

All I heard was Danny Brown saying that Hendrix jacked Arthur Lee from Love's style, and A$AP saying he'd never heard of Lee.

Coldplay, A Rush Of Blood To The Head (2002)
Label: Capitol
A$AP Rocky: "'The Scientist' was the shit, man. 'Nobody said it was easy,' that shit was too trill. Personally, sometimes you want some different shit, and that's what appealed to me. I can't describe it or explain it. That shit just really appealed to a nigga."

Village Voice: A lot of rappers claim to be down with rock and roll; it's become kind of a thing to be a rapper and do an interview and say something like "I'm down with Coldplay, I love Coldplay" to flash some sort of open-minded bona fides.

Danny Brown: People really do that? That's corny.

I find it endearing that the first choice to show you're "down with rock'n'roll" is Coldplay.

fennel cartwright, Sunday, 11 November 2012 14:29 (eleven years ago) link

ASAP has been absolutely terrible on everything since his first mixtape IMO .... has to be the stupidest 3 million sony has ever spent.. . rocky is too stupid to be an artist, too real to be a major label puppet.....

meanwhile....
"“I want to say it’s looking like top of the year, first quarter because it makes no sense to put out a album in December,” Rocky said in an interview. “The issue with my album is I got things on it that’s so out of this world that it’s taking so long to get mastered. That’s the issue, and I refuse to take anything off. … It’s complete. Everything is being mastered and cleared right now.”"

lolololol

oh god i can imiagine him wide eyed with fear listening to the kendrick album - he raised the bar while i was faffing around smoking bongs with danny brown?

i don't see why it's implausible. a LOT of dudes have tried to start rap blogs in the past few years in part to build buzz for their own career or someone in their crew, the other ones just weren't so successful.

this song kinda shades whoever upthread was saying kendrick's prob got a$ap worried, i'm not a huge fan of his necessarily (i like stuff like "suddenly" a lot) but this is definitely a next level iteration of his aesthetic. pretty beautiful actually, gonna go add to my 2015 songs list rn

I've loved most of the new songs tho, especially everyday and LSD

slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 26 May 2015 11:52 (eight years ago) link

a few listens, a few thoughts...

pleasantly surprised to hear this more psychedelic sound suiting him well, but aside from a few highlights it feels unfocused. not helped by all the bloat... cutting the entire middle third of the record (really, up until wayne's verse) would do a lot of good by itself. also some sequencing weirdness, I'm not sure if the record needed both "LSD" and "excuse me" but it definitely didn't need them side by side.

speaking of, I really was not expecting wayne to save "M'$." might be the best verse on the whole album...following his show-stealer on tyler's new one, no less. digging how he really shows up on these younger rappers' records, hoping it continues, (elsewhere, I wonder what kanye wanted in return for...that...)
