sounds EXACTLY like a neurosis album.

i was gonna say is there anything interesting about this one
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:14 (eleven years ago) link
feel like i just wait for the last two minutes of every song.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:19 (eleven years ago) link
you know when they go all "cuh-razy". cuz neurosis still good at going cray cray at the last minute. but yeah other than that kinda done with their thing. and god knows i have LOVED their thing in the past. loved it to death. tattoo-worthy greatness. but the last, like, 3 albums? i dunno.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:21 (eleven years ago) link
and its awesome
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:22 (eleven years ago) link
as was the last one
i like tons of bands that are similar to neurosis but never really been into neurosis themselves
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:25 (eleven years ago) link
skot what's yr fav neurosis album
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:26 (eleven years ago) link
i tried to love given to the rising. even said nice things about it here. then i never played it again. i feel like a sun that never sets is as far as i need to go. i still love that album to death. everything after that is just more of that but i guess i don't need more. certainly understand people who do. people still buy motorhead albums. i still like converge albums a lot. everyone has sounds they will buy over and over.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:27 (eleven years ago) link
converge changes a decent amount of stuff up from album to album tho
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:28 (eleven years ago) link
oh there you go. i love a sun that never sets and through silver in blood. i love times of grace too. and the EP they put out in 2000. but all their stuff up to and including a sun that never sets is fine by me.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:28 (eleven years ago) link
converge build on their contant sounds/themes. i enjoy the incremental/subtle changes. i always kinda wish that neurosis would incorporate MORE of the neurot psych/synth vibe into their tracks. they can always be leaner and meaner live.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:30 (eleven years ago) link
i would go for these dudes if their vocals weren't all constipated goth-drama agony, when one dude guests on last year's yob album it makes me wanna skip the track
― j., Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:31 (eleven years ago) link
the vocals are so in your face. and clean. i just wish they would mess with everything more. they are really good at what they do. i guess i do judge them differently than a straight ahead metal band. like they should change more, but they seem to be happy adding a little fx action here and there and leaving everything else pretty much unchanged. i guess i hear potential for craziness that they hint at but don't really give me. its not like i want trad doom bands to change their formula from album to album. i'm usually happy to be a trad dad.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:38 (eleven years ago) link
the new album definitely has more of their psych leanings on it than before. Maybe its more subtle than in your face.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:40 (eleven years ago) link
and lyrically i just wish they would use old nature poetry. just use robinson jeffers poems instead of their standard cliche sun-worship stuff. i mean BOOM here you go. jeffers shit is ready-made for neurosis:
Ante Mortem
It is likely enough that lions and scorpionsGuard the end; life never was bonded to be endurable nor theact of dyingUnpainful; the brain burning too oftenEarns, though it held itself detached from the object, often aburnt age.No matter, I shall not shorten it by hand.Incapable of body or unmoved of brain is no evil, one alwayswent envyingThe quietness of stones. But if the striped blossomInsanity spread lewd splendors and lightning terrors at the endof the forest;Or intolerable pain work its known miracle,Exile the monarch soul, set a sick monkey in the office . . .remember meEntire and balanced when I was younger,And could lift stones, and comprehend in the praises the crueltiesof life.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:43 (eleven years ago) link
the guitars sound great! like i said, they are really good at what they do.
was the new one recorded by albini?
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:45 (eleven years ago) link
"casting of the ages" on the new album has great guitar action on it. i think the psych elements are on every album. they just never let it rip enough. subarachnoid space are kinda better at that. being heavy and trippy. on album. similar vibe at times. and don't get me wrong, neurosis still better at trippy than 90% of indie rock "psych" bands out there today.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:48 (eleven years ago) link
see now i'm talking myself into liking this album. how dare you say that about neurosis! oh wait that was me...
― scott seward, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:49 (eleven years ago) link
still listening to the crappy download on the crappy website anyway.
yeah they recorded it at albini's place. they should get out of that place. they should record in europe somewhere. they need a blood trsnsfusion.

Well then:
“As of today, after much thought and discussion, visual projections as we have presented them over the last 20 years will no longer be part of Neurosis live shows. “We are going to begin the process of reinventing our live presentation. This process will begin at zero, allowing the music to speak for itself and lead us where it may. Whatever form or however long this may take is unknown. “This also signals a parting of the ways with our visual artist of the last twelve years, Josh Graham. Josh’s tireless work and talent came at a time when we really needed it and carried us gracefully into the video age with original content we couldn’t have dreamed of when we were just starting out. Our parting comes from a place of mutual respect, friendship and understanding. We all agree that this is a step Neurosis has to take and are open to working together on specific projects in the future. We wish him success and the best of luck with all of his own musical endeavors and artistic passions. In the spirit of sound,-Steve, Dave, Jason, Noah, and Scott” In conjunction with this release, Josh Graham issued the following statement: “For us all, time for change has come. The friendships and body of work that have spawned from our time together will live on as we move forward. It has been an honor and a privilege to work with Neurosis over the last 12 years. “As the crossroads are upon us, and we feel that the pinnacle of our collaborative efforts have been reached; we now look toward our individual futures with support and encouragement. Constant reinvention is at the heart and soul of us all, and we will all continue to persevere. “Despite the larger picture winding down as we move on in our own directions, we will continue to work together on specific legacy projects including reissues and possibly more if/when the right projects come up. Onward.”-Josh Graham

How is it?
― imago, Saturday, 24 September 2016 15:09 (seven years ago) link
That's weird, I was about to ask the same thing. I should probably listen to it myself, but not in the mood for slow 'n' low right now. I suppose it's only 40 minutes...

Got a full page review in Wire this month too

I said on Twitter last night that the marketing slogan should be "20 Minutes Shorter Than Our Last One!"

Mine arrived this evening. Not played it yet.
― Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 24 September 2016 21:15 (seven years ago) link
i'll bet it sounds EXACTLY like a Neurosis album.
― scott seward, Saturday, 24 September 2016 22:01 (seven years ago) link
Playing now and the 1st side doesn't sound like previous albums so far
― Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 24 September 2016 22:12 (seven years ago) link
but then again all bands will sound like that band.
ever feelies album sounds like a feelies album
― Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 24 September 2016 22:14 (seven years ago) link
Yeah, I don't mind bands sounding like themselves - it's called having a style.
But Neurosis are ferociously fucking boring. Almost as boring as people who go on and on about how emotionally overpowering their ponderous, monolithic songs are. I'm glad Laina got paid to write a full page for The Wire about them, because she's a friend and I like to see friends get paid, but yawn.

I dont always want to read a review by a fan but I wouldnt say I'd want to read a review by a hater either. I thought Laina's review was good.
― Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 25 September 2016 00:16 (seven years ago) link
but yeah it's Neurosis and if you dont like them then its not radically different to whats gone on before so it will change your mind but at the same time it doesn't feel like a retread either.
― Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 25 September 2016 00:17 (seven years ago) link
This is good, in fact
― imago, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 16:00 (seven years ago) link
Except the closing track, which is boring
― imago, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 16:17 (seven years ago) link
Penultimate track kind of squanders its promise too. First three are good mind
'Broken Ground' is by far the best track on this for me. I put off listening to it for fear of being underwhelmed but this is pretty decent.
