wish half of the heavily-arranged diane warren/imitation-warren aerosmith songs were as thoughtfully orchestrated as "you see me crying," okay

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 2 November 2012 18:50 (eleven years ago) link

I probably haven't listened to this since 1986, '87 at latest, but can still sing big chunks of most of the songs from memory. All of side 1 for sure. Not as great a record as Rocks imo. Figure the fighting dogs here are "Walk This Way" and "Sweet Emotion" with the title track maybe the spoiler.

ha those are the three I was deciding between

obv went "Sweet Emotion", because it's fuckin' "Sweet Emotion"

Gandalf’s Gobble Melt (DJP), Friday, 2 November 2012 18:53 (eleven years ago) link

Out of the deep cuts, I really love Adam's Apple and No More No More.

Trip Maker, Friday, 2 November 2012 18:54 (eleven years ago) link

well i'm probably voting "no more no more" or "round and round"

pretty certain r.e.m. were born whole out of "no more no more" and "sick as a dog"

title track

seasonal hugs (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 2 November 2012 18:57 (eleven years ago) link

This was one of my absolute favourite albums in Grade 7. I really need to find it and listen again.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 2 November 2012 18:59 (eleven years ago) link

"Uncle Salty" is interesting because it's Aerosmith doing the blues-rock thing in a way that's actually kinda good - the closer they get to this style, the quicker their appeal decreases for me, but the movement of the guitar and vocal is pretty damn sweet and the chorus has Tyler at his trembling-through-my-teeth best. The Beatles-rip bridge is fantastic, too.

man I had forgotten how much I loved the title track as a kid

Gandalf’s Gobble Melt (DJP), Friday, 2 November 2012 19:11 (eleven years ago) link

actually I'd forgotten how much I loved this entire album

Gandalf’s Gobble Melt (DJP), Friday, 2 November 2012 19:13 (eleven years ago) link

xp yeah I just fired that one up and as soon as that tape-reverse cymbal sounded I was like "well...hold up, 'sweet emotion'...this track slays"

there is something very evocative of The Monkees about the end of "Uncle Salty"

Gandalf’s Gobble Melt (DJP), Friday, 2 November 2012 19:15 (eleven years ago) link

Voted for 'No More No More' because I fucking love that intro.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 2 November 2012 19:16 (eleven years ago) link

I like how "Adam's Apple" sounds like it's about vampires if you aren't really paying attention

Gandalf’s Gobble Melt (DJP), Friday, 2 November 2012 19:18 (eleven years ago) link

fyi legit chills just went up my spine at the first 20 seconds of "Sweet Emotion"

Gandalf’s Gobble Melt (DJP), Friday, 2 November 2012 19:27 (eleven years ago) link

aerosmith at their best is about as good as rock music gets

seasonal hugs (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 2 November 2012 19:28 (eleven years ago) link

classic rock radio never ruined "sweet emotion" for me bc they always cut out the intro and the intro recreates the entire song for me without fail every time

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 2 November 2012 19:53 (eleven years ago) link

What a great fucking album!

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 2 November 2012 20:10 (eleven years ago) link

I really love "Sweet Emotion," but there's something special about "No More No More" so I'm-a give it some love.

Kent Burt, Saturday, 3 November 2012 03:53 (eleven years ago) link

The title track.
It was for sooooo many years that I only knew it by the REM cover:)

t**t, Saturday, 3 November 2012 09:02 (eleven years ago) link

Going for one of the two obcious ones here: "Sweet Emotion". That intro makes me very thirsty. For several things.

Mule, Saturday, 3 November 2012 12:31 (eleven years ago) link

man that 70s dead-room drum sound on "You See Me Crying" is so good, and so's Tyler's vocal - and the break into the bridge is remarkably clever - as with that crypto-Monkees moment cited by DJP this sounds like...the Beatles? Solo McCartney? amazing track, it's not "Toys" or "Sweet Emotion" but it's really something

Inconceivable (to the entire world) (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Saturday, 3 November 2012 14:39 (eleven years ago) link

oh man and that junkie falsetto at the end of it. fucking stellar

the more I go back the harder it is to pick one. This & Rocks are just so fucking good.

am i the only one who cant stand Sweet Emotion. thanks to classic rock radio i guess

turds (Hungry4Ass), Saturday, 3 November 2012 15:24 (eleven years ago) link

The guitars on this sounded amazing on headphones last night.

The title track is much better than I remembered ... my overexposure to the R.E.M. cover must have worn off. "Big Ten Inch Record" is by far the weakest track, but the jump blues arrangement almost makes up for the lyrics.

What an album. It's not hard to imagine a little dismay in the Stones camp when this came out.

Brad C., Saturday, 3 November 2012 15:42 (eleven years ago) link

Living in Norway, we don't really have classic rock radio. So radio never killed it for me. xxpost.

Mule, Saturday, 3 November 2012 15:45 (eleven years ago) link

layering harmonies at the end of "uncle salty" are the best thing in the world right now

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 3 November 2012 18:06 (eleven years ago) link

massive the way perry's guitar will suddenly outweigh anything else in the mix, e.g. the solo in "walk this way," when both guitars combine at any point in "sweet emotion"

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 3 November 2012 18:14 (eleven years ago) link

something about jack douglas-era aerosmith, whoever was mixing those records was able to create this murky, scary atmosphere inside of this otherwise really tight rock band

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 3 November 2012 18:16 (eleven years ago) link

anyway i voted for "no more no more" and i feel secure in that

ain't seen the daylight since we started this band

'No More No More' narrowly over 'Sweet Emotion'.

walk this way over sweet emotion (radio/mtv be damned)

No More No More because of the guitar solo.

Gotta vote Sweet Emotion, but yeah, lots of great stuff here. Great driving record.

Love this record, sans Big 10" Record... I voted the final track because of the orchestral arrangement. Pokes my heart.

lol

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/toys-in-the-attic-19750731

What's really important to bands of this sort is initial impact — the production must explode, enveloping the listener with a rampaging barrage of sound. The ideal mix is hot and spacious, with each instrument well defined and immediately intimate. A mix, in fact, not at all unlike that of the band's previous LP, Get Your Wings. On Toys, Aerosmith is given a more compact, jumbled mix that gives more of a "group" feel but robs them of that explosive ambience. Hence it's much harder to get involved with the music at first exposure to it.
