If you could take ownership of another person's record collection, whose would you pick?

WHO'DYA PICK? It can be someone famous, a friend of yours, maybe even an ILX0r. Justifications for your choice would be fun too.

Yep, or at least he used to. Apocryphally goes out every Monday and buys EVERY new release. Dunno how true that is, or if he'd buy, y'know, Swans, or Grishnak Anal Lobotomy Sodom, or whatever. But I figure he can spare one of his duplicate sets. And the house he keeps it in.

On the basis of size, I'd go for that of my mate's mate, Patrick. Last I'd heard, he'd sold his sofa to make room for more records. He claims that if you see a copy of an LP you love but already own in a bargain bin, it's "disrespectful" not to buy it.

Supposed Former ILM Lurker (WeWantMiles), Thursday, 22 November 2012 11:16 (eleven years ago) link

i thought about peels, but then came the conclusion that a lot of it would not be of interest to me in the slightest.

whereas scotts revelations re 60s/70s gems in other threads always hit the spot.

Ah, right. A lifetime wasted at record fairs and charity shops so I didn't have to. :)

My second choice would've been Tim Gane, natch. Famously lol-worthy Q&A with the BBC:
How many records are in your collection?
Tim: I don't count - but roughly 3,600 LPs/12"s and 1,950 7"s ... and 4 CDs.

Kind of tempting to have it all melted down and made into some bad-ass vinyl coffin, possibly in the shape of the Batmobile, but really it probably needs to all get sold in order to leave my kids *something* (not that it's worth a whole lot mind you). Unless of course they want to hang on to it themselves...

Albert Crampus (NickB), Thursday, 22 November 2012 20:11 (eleven years ago) link

thats a point re the kids.

you see up until a few weeks/months ago i would never have thought my kids would have been interested, but in the last few weeks my eldest (16!!!), has declared that he no longer uses spotify as he just goes into the archive and helps himself to a chunk of cds as thats a lot more fun.

i'd call that a serious result.

mark e, Thursday, 22 November 2012 20:14 (eleven years ago) link

i worry about my collection this way too. my kids aren't interested (although my Hawkwind section did elicit some interest last week, out of the blue). how about we start an ILX Foundation Archive? i worry about my stuff ending up in some grim estate sale.

also, i would gladly accept Scott Foust's record collection.

Actually, my kids are in line to get my CDs but, really, they'll likely look at a room full of physical objects with disdain. Hopefully ILM circa 2051 will have someone who'll be worthy.

It's almost all on CD. I never fell for LPs though listening to old vinyl on my mates new system has been revelatory. PiL's "Flowers Of Romance" makes more sense than ever before.

I'd want from Chuck Warner's (Hyped2Death records) collection. So many uber-rare UK punk and post-punk 45s to devour...
