Gotta Make Polls for the Polls I Make - ILM HUSKER DU POLL RESULTS

Here are the results from voting that stemmed from this thread: Gotta Lotta POLLING To Do - ILM Artist Poll #29 - Your HÜSKER DÜ Nominations Thread

In all, we received 25 ballots – not a bad showing for the fourth or fifth most popular act to come out of Minnesota in the 1980s. Though the last thread showed a definite bell curve from which albums the best songs came from (Zen Arcade through Flip Your Wig), this wasn't the consistency that ran through each ballot. Some ballots finished even before the SST years were over. Some ballots were very heavy on the Warner Bros years.

Two albums each saw every song get at least one vote. Both of these albums surprised the hell out of me for running the table in this department. Here in a moment, we'll get into that when I list the top albums voted.

Today, we'll begin with songs Nos. 21-30, likely to begin in about four hours or so. But first, let's get this part out of the way:

I asked which songwriter or member of the band you preferred. A vote was made on most ballots, though usually with a comment like "if I had to choose," "if you put a gun to my head," or "I don't like this question, but –". And as I implied, some ballots didn't make a vote on this subject at all. My take on this is pretty obvious: Hüsker Dü was a sum of its parts, and choosing one member over the other diminishes the final product.

But that said, here were the results:

http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/tt203/pplains/Husker%20Du%20Poll/hdmemberresults-1.jpg

So Grant Hart wins the popular vote, but will he win in the electoral college that will be our Top 30 Hüsker Dü Songs of All Time? We'll find out this week.

All right, I hate to pull the "I've got a meeting" card, but I've got a meeting to go to in an hour. Let's get the albums out of the way before then, and we'll get to the first songs after lunch/dinner.

Not everyone voted for a favorite album either. I won't embarrass this poll by publishing exactly how many votes each record got. Let's just say there was plenty of room to swing this part of the poll from one side to the other.

So I'll list each album that received votes, including this one .

Okay, I'll reveal how many votes that one got: 1.

pplains, Monday, 26 November 2012 15:13 (eleven years ago) link

Steve Albini voted?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 November 2012 15:15 (eleven years ago) link

fwiw my answer to the Hart/Mould question was, Hart with Mould's guitar. Really hard to separate my love for Grant's songs from the way Bob made them sound.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 26 November 2012 15:17 (eleven years ago) link

I gave Hart a bit of an edge, yet when I looked at my list afterwards, there were more Mould songs. Maybe my very favourite Hart songs (top two or three?) on balance beat my favourite Mould songs, or maybe Grant just seems more likeable. I don't know.

3. Flip Your Wig
SST Records, 1985

pplains, Monday, 26 November 2012 15:32 (eleven years ago) link

I should have mentioned there's a tie at No. 3.

Flip Your Wig was the last Husker Du record I listened to, outside of Everything Falls Apart & More and Living End which were released later.

This is likely the happiest record they ever made. I love the bon voyage feeling to it, where they're letting loose one more time before heading off to the majors. They sound downright giddy. Even Bob.

pplains, Monday, 26 November 2012 15:35 (eleven years ago) link

Flip Your Wig was the last Du record you listened to, or last one you got around to listening to? Because I'd give you the stinkeye if you said you never heard the Warners albums.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 November 2012 15:38 (eleven years ago) link

For me FYW is where they tipped the scale from sound to songs. Could argue that NDR perfectly balances the two and is therefore their high point, and I wouldn't disagree. But FYW is still the one I've listened to most.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 26 November 2012 15:39 (eleven years ago) link

There are some serious stinkers on here that are a harbinger of things to come; there are also some of my favorite Bob AND Grant songs.
I've always felt it was a pretty mixed bag.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 November 2012 15:55 (eleven years ago) link

So did I. It wasn't the first or last Husker Du album I bought, but it was the one that spoke most to me - in particular the songs on disc two seemed to be in a dialogue with each other about what was going on in my life at the time. Can I also state it has an utterly brilliant sleeve note, too.

That was their stage set on the first '87 tour.

It's never occurred to me until now that I've never seen much live Husker Du clips from the Warner years. There's Joan, there's some outdoor festivals, but not much else.

I guess they never made it to any auditorium or arena seating like that band from Twin/Tone did?

pplains, Monday, 26 November 2012 17:37 (eleven years ago) link

(and thanks for the kind words on the graphics! Johnny Fever's Pavement poll gave me some inspiration.)

pplains, Monday, 26 November 2012 17:38 (eleven years ago) link

It was a weird feeling: the lights went down, you saw the day-glo 3D rendering of the Warehouse cover, and for a second you thought, "Oh shit. A stage set? For Husker Du?" Then they proceeded to nearly blow up the building. So yeah, they made up for it.

It's a pretty album cover, but damn near my least-favorite (Candy Apple I guess edges it out.)

Will have to catch up at home...No offense to anyone who voted for it, but I'm glad "Turn on the News" is low. It got so much attention at the time, starting with Christgau. I've always considered it quite bombastic. I went back and checked yesterday, and it hadn't gotten any better.

pplains, Monday, 26 November 2012 21:57 (eleven years ago) link

I cut Diane at the last minute, but here is a short version of my Diane story.

I drove my parents' car into a ditch less than 6 mo after I got my driver's license. I was standing by the side of the road in snow up to my waist when a station wagon with two youngish men wearing purple camo suits drove up and offered me a ride home. It wasn't a great neighborhood, and I was 16 and alone, and it was cold and snowy, so I got into the car. They dropped me off, I said thank you, and nothing else happened that I recall. My parents were glad I was home, but appalled that I would have gotten into the car with these strangers.

I don't remember anything about the incident aside from them offering me a ride, but when I heard Diane for the first time a few years later, it was like I was back there and saw the car pull up again. I don't think they invited me to a party but I suddenly had the thought that maybe they had. It was REALLY weird.

The end.

-- I think this is the first time I've ever heard "In a Free Land"
-- I also assumed "I Apologize" would be Top 10 (but realize how arbitrary these results can be)
-- "Diane" has always made me think of "Riders on the Storm"
-- "Divide and Conquer" was my #2, and some days it's my #1
-- ditto on the graphics; they're very Husker Du-ish!

I voted for Divide & Conquer. Am I imaginging it or is there kind of a drone thing going on with that song, which gives it kind of raga feel? Cos it's always felt that way to me as well as being this totally rocking tune at the same time.

Can finally see the graphics at home and LOVE them. Riverside Plaza apartments one under "In a Free Land" especially. Where Mary Tyler Moore lived toward the end.

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 04:11 (eleven years ago) link

WHAT? Mary Richards never lived in the ghetto in the sky, did she?

I lived in Minneapolis for a brief period and went there to see how much units leased out for. The woman at the desk gave me all of these forms and applications to fill out. I had no idea that by that time, it was a housing project.

I wound up just south of 94 between Chicago and Park. Should've gone with the housing.

pplains, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 04:23 (eleven years ago) link

sad I missed voting in this poll, good results so far though.

Neil S, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 10:19 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, Mary went from Kenwood to the West Bank, where she started wearing piercings.

Revising my earlier neutrality: "Diane" is a huge lapse, IMO. Great riff, chorus, guitar solo, but that unfortunate genre of punk song that takes an actual horrifying event and does nothing more than play it out again. And tastelessly uses her real name (you can look it up).

To balance with some kindness: I still love the feedback hippie-punk guitar bounce on the "times, places" refrain of "Flexible Flyer," their Citizen Kane with a happy ending. Ultimately cornball, but I obsessed over it at the time.

I'm not a huge "Divide & Conquer" fan, but I'll admit the lyrics get better rather than worse in retrospect.

I voted "In a Free Land" because it's another great hardcore critique of do-nothing democracy, but with those unexpectedly complex chord changes and flashes of '60s-ish melody.

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 12:39 (eleven years ago) link

pplains, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 16:12 (eleven years ago) link

It's Grant's delivery that makes it skeevy. In concept, "Diane" is no less blunt than "Jordan MN" or a lot of other songs from the scene and era. Hart is convincing in the song in a way few of his peers were. There not even the thin film of irony you'd get in the Birthday Party or Black Flag.

"whatever" and "terms" are cool but i didn't bother voting for them, guessing some of my warner-era nods didn't make the cut then. xpost and then a warner-era track i didn't vote made the top 20.

I only heard "Diane" relatively recently but i love it. Definitely understand if people find it in poor taste or too harrowing, but it's a really gripping, complicated mess of a song. i've read that grant was allegedly friends with edwards, and the casual flippancy of the verses mixed with the agony of the vocal suggests, at least to me, a real horror. obviously no one needs to clap hart on the back for dealing with this shit in a public sphere, though i doubt he thought "oh it'll be great when some irish group takes it to the UK top 30 ten years from now."

"Could You Be the One?" seems like the sort of Husker song someone who came to the band via Sugar might vote for.

Or, like me, maybe for people who came to the band via the Warehouse album and not aware that it's basically boilerplate Mould but still love it anyway because it was an early favorite.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 20:15 (eleven years ago) link

I dig "Could You Be The One," even though it didn't make my ballot (only two Warehouse songs did, both Hart's). But seeing it on MTV I thought, "Yay! Now everyone can see how great this band is!" but also "...this...this isn't what I'd play for someone to show them how great this band is."

That said, it occupies a cherished place on a mixtape I made in 1988. Or 1989. Yeah, 1989.

"Books About UFOs" was my #1. One of the most joyous songs I can think of. I remember how utterly out of nowhere it seemed to appear on New Day Rising--there had been definite hints of a pop sensibility before on "It's Not Funny Anymore" and parts of Zen Arcade, but nothing like that. If it's based a real girl, that was the girl for me. She sounds like the most perfect and perfectly flaky '70s kind of girl.

clemenza, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 22:47 (eleven years ago) link

That "Books" clip is so good. The kid walking back and forth, the people in back who are barely paying attention...Part of me wants to say, "Don't you know who this is? Don't you know what he's playing?" But in other ways, everything seems exactly as it ought to be for "Books About UFOs." Why wasn't I there?!

People who prefer Hart to Mould: is it about lyrics? I just realized that Hart probably wrote much better lyrics.

not always

da croupier, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 23:28 (eleven years ago) link

I think his songs are catchier/prettier/more affecting/moving. And as much as I like Mould's mastery of bllllaaaaaaargh!, Hart can even best him in that category on stuff like "The Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill." Which I imagine will place ... high. I still love Mould's songs, of course, but it was Hart I always connected with when the band and me were in sync.

it's a testament to the band that any claim one wants to make about the qualities of one over the other can be shut down. like i might want to say grant has more annoying hollow earworms, someone could play me "it's not peculiar" or "turn it around" to differ. cuz really anything, good or bad, one was doing, the other would be damn sure to do to

I think it took til "Warehouse," honestly, for Bob to catch up to Grant in the pop department. Up until then they sort of excelled at different things. But, like, those two songs I pretty much like as much as any of the Grant stuff.

anyway I prefer Mould when "Hardly Getting Over It" is on -- a slowcore iteration of the MBV-angst he mastered on Copper Blue -- but change my mind when "No Promise Have I made" is on.

Seeing some of the clips reminds me: On top of everything else, Mould and Hart were great, creative backup singers to each other. And sometimes hugely subtle but crucial, like Hart on "Games" or Mould on "Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill."

Totally late to the poll/didn't vote etc., but enjoying the results. Ditto to what Josh said about Grant playing small, bad venues - but some of my favorite personal recordings of his shows are small venues. I was listening to the 'Spot's Arcade' bootleg getting ready for work this a.m. and that has some tasty Zen alternate takes/diff. songs. I think I'd personally chew Spot out if I ever met him - poor, lackadaisical, noisy production on whatever he touched. No wonder we've never had proper remasters. I saw HD on my 17th birthday and it took until seeing Mould this year to have closure on hearing some of the songs I needed to hear at that age, during that show.

BlackIronPrison, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 14:36 (eleven years ago) link

Had tickets to see Grant here in 2009, but things got in the way, and I had to skip it. The next day, all accounts were that it was a complete disaster. In a way, I was glad I missed it; I don't think I could've taken seeing him so far off his game.

In Chicago in 1986 they played Cabaret Metro (1200 capacity); in early '87 they played the Riviera (3000), and in late '87 the Vic (I wanna say 3500-4000?). Dunno where they played before '86.

I usually don't play the fan boy game, but hey, this thread's perfect for it.

I was 15 and listening to Guns N' Roses when Husker Du broke up, and they likely never played within 100 miles of me anyway. (Black Flag did though!) So I never saw them live.

However, I have been in close contact with two members: Got a nod and a howya doin' from Bob at a Sugar show as I staked my place next to his side of the stage. Also heard him on a SXSW panel talking about how record companies work and why people like Helmet should watch themselves.

I sold a six-pack of Summit to Greg Norton. I was working the register at a long-since-demolished liquor store by the Metrodome. One of those weird moments where I look up and there's that handlebar mustache and twinkly brown eyes looking back at me. He also gave me a nod and a "all right, let's be cool about this" kind of look. I took his $6.98 and told him to have a nice day.

Never met Grant, but I do always keep an eye out for him whenever I eat at a Perkins.

I was too poor to see these shows, two acoustic solo sets from Bob. I was working for the Downtown Marriot as a valet and one of our garages was in the same building as 7th St/1st Ave (I'd frequently have to wait for the line of people on the sidewalk to part so I could pull into the garage.)

And I remember squatting down between a car bumper and the wall, hiding from any of my other valets, smoking a cigarette and listening to Bob sing "Man on the Moon" from the other side.

Also, recently realized that the single and LP mixes are slightly different; the single is more raw/less 80s-hair-metal-reverby.

One quick note: you'll notice Nos. 6 & 5 have the same number of points, but unlike the other ties, I gave the edge to the one that had more first-place votes.

Next time, I might use number of votes received as another tie-breaker, but with only 25 ballots, I'm not sure how much difference it would have made on this poll anyway.

clemenza, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 19:45 (eleven years ago) link

This was also one of the songs that gave me pause in assigning writing credit. "In A Free Land" is credited to Hart/Mould/Norton while this one's attributed to Mould/Hüsker Dü.

You could surmise that band politics were really swinging into effect by the time this record came out.

pplains, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 19:48 (eleven years ago) link

Another Mould/HD song from that album is "How To Skin A Cat".

So Bob repeats take the rats from the cats and the cats from the rats 20 times and gets songwriting credit? And vetoes a slide guitar on one of Grant's songs because it doesn't fit the record?

One of those reasons that I lean toward Grant.

New Day Rising is like gospel music for me in a number of ways which I will absolutely not bore anyone with. Strong feelings!

Hi five La Lechera! You write a list of Husker Du songs down, you've gotta damn well start with New Day Rising imo. You mentioned gospel music, maybe I'm overdoing it here but I think it's kind of Coltrane-ish or Ayler-esque in a way - the fervour, the repetition, the overall sentiment of it. Anyhow, awesome song! Love the way the drums break out of that bash-bash-bash rhythm the first time around and the bass really kicks in and it feels like this whole rush of ecstatic noise is going to carry you away. Fuck yes!

'84 Pazz & Jop:

1. Prince: "When Doves Cry"/"17 Days" (Warner Bros.) 111
2. Bruce Springsteen: "Dancing in the Dark"/"Pink Cadillac" (Columbia) 71
3. Tina Turner: "What's Love Got To Do With It" (Capitol) 61
4. Hüsker Dü: "Eight Miles High" (SST) 56
5. Van Halen: "Jump" (Warner Bros.) 52

#1, 2, 3, and 5 are all fine songs--great songs, if you like, I won't argue. But at the time, being 22 (and really caring about things like Pazz & Jop), seeing "Eight Miles High" right there in the middle of them felt really, really important.

A few notes:

• The Spotify playlist.

• You can view the spreadsheets I used.

• Zen Arcade and New Day Rising both placed seven songs in the Top 30. Flip Your Wig a close second with six.

• The two albums that received a vote for every song were Zen Arcade, which surprised me because even the piano interludes received votes, and Candy Apple Grey, surprising since no one named it as a favorite album and it's traditionally been shunned by the HD crowd for the most part.

• Not one single vote for that MTM cover. Not a one!

Great work on the poll and thank you. For what its worth, "Eight miles high" was the first Husker Du song I ever heard - I'd just started listening to John Peel's show in the summer of 84 and he played it and I was blown away. I knew and adored the Byrds' version but I'd not heard anything like this before, it was reverent but irreverent too, and the way Bob just seemed to lose it on the vocals and just SCREAM in such an incoherent but powerful way. It was a great record to hear when I was 15. A great introduction to a great band.

For a v.long time Zen Arcade was all I knew; was hard to find HD stuff in NZ and it cost a bunch to import to NZ. I'd assumed "Pink Turns To Blue" would take #1 as it's the one I hear around & about the most, and it's twinned w/the Chills' "Pink Frost" in my mind. My future partner put "Green Eyes" on a mixtape for me, so a lot of sentimental attachment to it. I guess I had more time for the stuff which sounded like Alastair Galbraith/Xpressway over hardcore, heh.

That's funny--my P&J ballot wasn't tabulated last year either. Apparently I make a deep impression.

Anyway, all I would have done is barely move "Books" into the Top 10. I missed votes and had to fix the two polls I ran while I was counting down, so I realize it happens.

I checked back, and I did interview both Bob and Grant over the phone--the intro calls it a brief interview, so maybe that explains why I don't remember it at all. It was timed to the release of Warehouse, not Candy Apple Grey. Quotes are mixed in with an album-by-album rundown. Really odd: eight quotes from Bob, one from Grant. I started reading the album blurbs and stopped immediately--me at my most overwrought and pretentious.

Right on. Always felt that side of the band never got enough love/wasn't explored enough.

It was more like a side of an album than a side of the band, but an alternative-universe Husker Du that kept on doing long psych-punk freakouts alongside the other stuff is nice to think about.

I think HD is just one of those bands that did everything right. I like every side of them: the hardcore stuff, the psych jams, the pop stuff, the scuzz, the fuzz, the polish. No real wrong turns and, best of all, as much as it's too bad the band broke up, I'm pretty satisfied with what it left behind.

Actually, Sund4r, you might be the best person to ask about this - are there many other 80s US underground tracks similar to "Recurring Dreams"/"The Tooth Fairy & the Princess", Sonic Youth's "Providence", etc? I wouldn't mind putting together a comp/playlist but my knowledge of non-NZ stuff is pretty shallow.

This is otm, and I think it's also why "Eight Miles High" was #1: it's the best of all of those.

only one whose absence really surprises me now is "keep hanging on" since ilx seems pretty comfortable with hart-corn

kind of the opposite idea, but the good news is that i will always have both songs to listen to whenever the mood strikes

Don’t Want To Know If You Are Lonely

Statues - My favorite bass line
Eight Miles High
Broken Home, Broken Heart
Folk Lore - another one I thought would rank higher

my ballot wd've been close to tipsy's (plus Flexible Flyer).

I remember how weird their playing the Warehouse album in running order seemed on that tour, compared to the loose earlier gigs. I went to a Beacon Theater AIDS benefit in Dec '87 where they were supposed to play acoustically (also Laurie Anderson, Glass, Burroughs, John Waters) but they didn't show, having just broken up.

When I went to school at Missouri, there was a man standing at the city limits welcoming all of us freshman and telling us that Husker Du played their last show there at the Blue Note in 1988.

pplains, Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:21 (eleven years ago) link

Just a quick addendum here. Not sure if there is a recording of it (brief search online came up with no results), but Oneida apparently once played a set in Europe that consisted of one song: a cover of "New Day Rising". You can definitely hear parts of the Oneida DNA in that song (especially Kids drumming in regards to the drum intro) and I bet that they played the hell out of it.

this board is gradually convincing me I should have paid more attention to Oneida, actually. Where do I start?

my other pug is a stillsuit (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 29 November 2012 17:53 (eleven years ago) link

Hmm, don't wanna hijack a Husker Du thread with Oneida talk, but the idea of where to start would differ depending on the Oneida fan. They cover a lot of territory. Will try to revive a thread and make suggestions there. Closest thing to what a live 45 minute "New Day Rising" in their catalogue, and a big diving off point as to whether you want Oneida in your life or not, would be "Sheets of Easter" from the album Each One Teach One.

Thirded. In amongst all that pretty decent hardcore, was this gem. At that age aswell, I loved the lyrics but the tune was sublime. That chorused, clean, guitar , albeit multi tracked with some grit, certainly signalled the willingness to change in direction . I'm not sure if Mould used that technique again though?

This was so awesome, thank you for the dose of happiness.

Only painful moment: looking back at the show history on thirdav.com and realizing they played Madison, WI, not once, not twice, but EIGHT times in '83 and '84, before I saw them. Most were all-ages gigs before Zen Arcade, which is when I got into them: One was a bar show after, when I was still too young. Which makes me all the more grateful for that January '86 Turner Hall gymnasium show, kind of their last hardcore hurrah in Madison.

Good show last night!!! He played a lot of solo stuff, incl a bunch from Hot Wax (he played My Regrets on my request!), and maybe this is a normal thing, but he sang 2541 with totally different lyrics about the 1840s? He begrudgingly played Flexible Flyer and a few other Dü songs ill-suited to the solo-with-guitar setup (also on request) and was having some guitar probs but was affable in spite of them. There were plenty of people there, but I was among the most enthusiastic. Not surprisingly I guess. I found it charming that he changed into his performance shoes, and he complimented me on my shoes as well. After the show we talked a little bit about his new album with the Irish musicians (which I knew all about thanks to the interview above!!!) and he said that he wants to start playing for "the ballet crowd" and not spend the rest of his life in (gestures around his head) "places like this."

This picture is not the best, but you can see how kind and warm he was. I think I was grabbing his arm pretty hard and he didn't complain.

I probably wouldn't go out of my way to see it in a theater, but I'd watch it at home. I didn't watch the Replacements doc because I don't need to see a bunch of people talking about how much they like a band. BUT Grant is part of this doc and the trailer was cute so hey -- I'd give it a shot.

Also, I have high doc standards, it's true.

I trudged through the Replacements doc, and it was endlessly frustrating. But there were a few glimmers of new/interesting information, like how DTaS was remixed against their will...which, granted, anyone coulda guessed...yeah, never mind.

I'd see this, though, hacky or otherwise, just to see how he's doing.

Saw Bob Mould last night. I know very little of his own work--all I have is File Under: Easy Listening, and all I remember from that is "Your Favorite Thing." Anyway, the show started really well: the first song was about "relax" or "react," then something about "it's a good thing/she said" (or maybe "success"), then a song from Warehouse (the titles always blur with me). The middle part wandered a bit, with one song that went on forever, but he did mix in "I Apologize" and "Your Favorite Thing." Best of all was the last encore. He started with a promise that "If you're within five years of my age, you'll recognize this right away," lead-in to the Viletones' "Screamin' Fist." Great local touch--he even shared vocals with some guy who my friend told me was Steven Leckie's nephew. Then he finished with "Flip Your Wig"/"Hate Paper Doll"/"Makes No Sense at All". That was a perfect ending for me--either he agrees with me that FYW was Husker Du's greatest album (not New Day Rising, and especially not Zen Arcade), or that's the one that for whatever reason carries the least amount of baggage for him.

Man, Grant has had a new album coming out for forever.

BTW, saw some Hart interview with this new (to me) nugget:

GH: “The current situation with SST is not good but will get brighter. Greg Ginn (SST founder) is actually suing the band for overpayment of royalties. A World Turned Upside Down.”

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Saturday, 2 March 2013 23:33 (eleven years ago) link

Sounds like the first two were "The Act We Act" and "A Good Idea", the first two from Copper Blue.

Copper Blue was a Sugar album, clemenza. Sugar was the band that Mould started after Husker Du.

pplains, Saturday, 2 March 2013 23:44 (eleven years ago) link

And here I thought he had gone off and formed Cutting Crew--thanks.

So Flip Your Wig is his favorite. I thought about it some, and I should amend what I wrote above: I think it's his best Husker Du album. My favourite Grant songs are scattered across the others.

clemenza, Saturday, 2 March 2013 23:59 (eleven years ago) link

Flip Your Wig is Husker's Green River: you've just managed to catch your breath after New Day Rising/Bayou Country, this just-as-amazing work comes along mere months later, and before you can fully absorb it, it's quickly followed up by the nearly-as-amazing Willy and the Poorboys/Candy Apple Grey. So, by no fault of its own, it sometimes gets lost in the shuffle.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Sunday, 3 March 2013 00:03 (eleven years ago) link

I suppose it does sound bizarre that someone who loves Husker Du, and who bought most of their albums as they came out, would have had no interest in Mould's post-Husker work. (Even File Under I didn't buy until many years later.) I'm not sure, though, if that's any weirder than someone who loves the Rolling Stones having no interest in a Mick Jagger album, or a Who fan and a Peter Towhshend album, etc. The Husker Du story had a nice, full-stop ending for me. At the time, I didn't need to hear any more--plus, after years of primarily listening to indie and punk rock, I had also started to pay attention to Top 40 again.

It seemed downright bizarre at the time. I remember seeing a print ad for a local record store that featured Candy Apple Grey among the new releases. I thought for sure it was a misprint, since it felt like FYW had just come out. Adding to the confusion was the Warners logo.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Sunday, 3 March 2013 00:13 (eleven years ago) link

I wasn't there for Husker Du (I was for Sugar), but it seems like it would've been totally disorienting to buy New Day Rising the day it comes out and then see them the next week performing mostly songs from Flip Your Wig.

I mean, you don't have to be Ricky Nelson playing at a Garden Party, but playing the next album a year before it's released is something else.

pplains, Sunday, 3 March 2013 00:15 (eleven years ago) link

And to follow up CAG with another double a few months later...Starting with Everything Falls Apart, their release schedule goes 1/83, 10/83, 7/84, 1/85, 8/85, 3/86, 1/87. I remember one of those Creem special issues where the writer was going through the Rolling Stones discography album by album, and at one point he stopped himself and said, "Wow--they sure did churn them out in those days."

Motley Crue sucks. I can't decide on the highlight (lowlight) of the last time I saw them, either Tommy Lee springing up on a Thunderdome harness to some suspended percussion and repeatedly missing his goal (in Tommy Lee surfer voice: "Aw, maaaaaaan....") or Vince Neil sounding like shit and repeatedly, angrily motioning to his microphone and scrunching up his face in frustration. Do you know the only people who ever really do that? People that can't sing.

1) the NO WAR image at the top of the thread -- the colors -- whoa to see that in spring 2022
2) i went to a show last week and the first band that played totally blew me away -- they were a three piece with a really strong (female!) drummer and two songwriters/singers, and i realized they reminded me of HD. in all of the shows i have seen and bands i have enjoyed, this Du-quality is so rare that it took me by surprise
3) on a whim I listened to "In a Free Land" and all the feelings I have about this band came flooding back -- I have been on my semi-regular Dü kick ever since
4) i cried in the car while listening to "Diane"
5) i think they is probably my favorite rock band of all time, which is inconsequential in the big picture but makes me realize how head and shoulders better than so many of their peers these three people are

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Wednesday, 13 April 2022 20:28 (two years ago) link

I really wanna check out that band. I can’t think of anyone who has/had that Dü energy.

Just came across this, from a new book called Corporate Rock Sucks: The Rise and Fall of SST Records, which explains the lack of any Hüsker reissues:

"There's a large gap between what most labels would do and SST's current business practices. One possible explanation for SST's curious disregard for its own history is that it no longer has access to those original recordings. Consider the story of how Black Flag's Live '84 had to be painstakingly remixed. Those tapes fell into disrepair in less than 15 years. What do the original masters look like now? What about recordings made even earlier?

SST's location in LA's South Bay may have played a role in this mystery. When the sun goes down in the Beach Cities, the marine layer creeps in and hangs around until morning. The mass of air is created when cool offshore temperatures collide with warmer inland temperatures. These damp conditions can have a catastrophic effect on analog tapes, which are sensitive to both heat and humidity and should be kept in a cool, dry temperature-controlled atmosphere. To put it another way, the South Bay may have been the worst possible place for SST's tapes.

SST didn't really have a stable environment in which to store them until 1987. Over the years stories have emerged about the reckless handling of masters, such as when Emil Johnson retaliated against Black Flag by stealing them. SST was able to get them back, but the temporary solution was to hide them in Mugger's girlfriend's closet. When (former SST employee Daniel) Spector was general manager at SST, he didn't have access to the masters, which meant responsibility for their safety and storage fell to (Greg) Ginn. According to the Meat Puppets, when the band requested that SST turn over the masters, the band was told they were lost. That sounds like evasion, but what if it were true? How many other recordings are missing?

'That's the million dollar question,' Spector said. 'Probably a ten million dollar question.'

SST can't reproduce what it doesn't have. Given the lack of safe storage, perhaps this is one reason SST hasn't issued lavish editions of milestone albums like Damaged, Double Nickels on the Dime, and Zen Arcade. For whatever reason, whether they were lost in all the moves, misplaced out of carelessness, stolen due to insecure storage, or unintentionally damaged, SST's inability to produce quality tapes would explain a lot."

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 13 April 2022 22:44 (two years ago) link

Numero shared some new photos of master tape boxes for the later Dü SST albums during the build-up to The Hungry Young... set, falsely getting hopes up that they had the rights to that stuff as well.

I don’t think those records, save probably Metal Circus, are an honest representation of the sound of the band - IMO The Living End sounds a lot better than any of their main albums.

I do think it was a mistake not to hand the reins over to someone else for the albums from Flip Your Wig on. They obviously made some mistakes in terms of letting go of some of the decisions surrounding the band to outsiders once they move from SST to Warners and this was one of them.

Listening to Soul Asylum’s Made To Be Broken (produced by Mould) and it sounds a good bit thinner - with the same biscuit tin drum sound as found on Flip Your Wig/CAG/Warehouse - than While You Were Out and Hang Time

On the old indie rawk recording quality angle, I gave the Jesus Urge Superstar / Americruiser CD a listen. In 1986 there wasn't really a clear path for this band to follow, as a hardcore punk band making its way towards maturity and accessibility. The "life lessons" lyrics on Warehouse seem as much self-directed as trying to lecture younger fans, or attempts to come off as a guiding light.

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 22:55 (one year ago) link

I think he's selectively egotistical and (falsely) modest. There are lots of times he writes like he was the leader of the band without claiming to be the leader of the band. Other times, he calls out other people for *their* respective "power trips," but never acknowledges his own moves. He seems to go out of his way, barely, to cite Grant's great songs, but two of Grant's best - "2541" and "Turn On the News" - only get sort of belated respect or relative dismissal, respectively. He'll kind of talk shit about the Replacements on one page, but then a few pages later talk about them as friendly peers. He alludes to his own bad behavior on speed/drugs/alcohol, but never indicates whether his own behavior had any impact on the fate of the band. Whenever he can he throws Grant under the bus, for various reasons, but Mould never calls his own motives and motivations into question. It's always someone else fucking up or forgetting something or not seeing the big picture. That sort of thing.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 23:18 (one year ago) link

JoC on the money about his bio book. It’s kinda the tough thing about being a Hüsker Dü fan - for every new, admittedly 3/4ths good Bob release, we no longer have sublime Grant records that provided a look into his creative process/scene which was so obviously was different, (but enjoyable/rewarding) from Bob’s. I’ll bet he is tormented by the one on stage reunion (the Karl mueller get together I believe).

Josh's description encapsulates why I so much prefer reading biographies over autobiographies/memoirs (aware that there are exceptions). I would gladly read a well written biography of Husker Du--there's probably one out there besides Michael Azerrad's chapter on them, which was quite good as I remember it, I've just never looked into it. I knew about Mould's book but it just doesn't interest me that much.

Interesting and surprising. Mould strikes me as a writerly guy who wouldn't take on a co-author.

I'd love Bob Mehr to turn his gaze on HD.

Woo -- yeah THAT would be something.

Been a while since I read it and I know there’s comments on another thread, but that Earles book is not very good. At least Greg Norton gets his say in it, though.

I'd love Bob Mehr to turn his gaze on HD.

Yes, that would be amazing.

Mould's a complicated guy with a lot of damage he's trying to figure out, and I think that explains his book, which I didn't really enjoy. He's seemed more sanguine lately - when I interviewed him in 2020 he was talking about the peace he struck with Grant while they were working on the Numero box set, and his sadness over Grant's death. But you just have to listen to his songs to know this is a guy who holds a grudge and is on very visceral terms with his own emotions.

In its defense, the book doesn't scan like bitter score settling or anything like that, but it has this smug history is written by with the winner tone to it that rubs me the wrong way. The weirdest thing about it is how for all the focus on Husker Du (at least at the start of the book, sensibly), it often feels like Mould barely knew Grant and Greg. Which is oddly possible; Mould mentions how they never socialized outside of the band, and later, when their manager David Savoy commits suicide, Mould mentions how he knew next to nothing about his personal life or family, too.

Still, this is a group that was together from '79-'89. That's longer than the Police, or the Smiths, or the Beatles. You'd think those hundreds and hundreds of hours spent in motels or the van together would amount to more, but maybe not. (Mould claims Greg would diligently drive in silence, while he and Hart would sleep in the back, because they were the hard workers that needed their rest, of course, writing these songs that make all the money, something Mould pretty much literally states). Maybe the band was just interpersonally dysfunctional from the start and it really was strictly professional, like office mates. Or as I was saying with my complaints about the way this story is being told, maybe (essentially) last man standing Mould and his own damaged personalty were the problem and he's ultimately unable to fully see or admit it.

I was browsing this book in the library, mostly to see what he had to say about Workbook, and his writing about the other members of Hüsker Dü was really externalized: "they were doing this or that", but not a lot of curiosity or even acknowledgement that there might be reasons why. Same with Chris Stamey playing on the first solo tour, wanting to avoid hearing damage and annoying Mould by keeping the volume too low.

Exactly.

A (male) musician being self-centered??!!!! Whaaaaaaat?? Idk what y’all expected — what I want from a memoir type book is for someone to show me who they are, whether I like it or not. His book succeeded for me on that level.

All memoirs are self-centered, but some are more gracious than others. As I've been reading this I have kept in mind how Robert Forster wrote about a different Grant.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 17:14 (one year ago) link

And you hope the passage of time would "grant" a memoirist a certain amount of insight, too.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 17:17 (one year ago) link

The Forster memoir is to me a model of its kind: wry, often rueful, impeccable in its accounts about recording + songwriting, and humble enough to acknowledge that there are shadows in his best friend he never understood.

I just got to the part in the book where the band has broken up, and Mould is working on solo stuff. He plays some songs for someone, and they get this look on their face and ask him if he's ever heard of Richard Thompson. "No," says Bob. The guy hands him "Bright Lights" and "Shoot Out the Lights" and Bob listens and, would you believe it, Bob agrees he sounds just like Richard Thompson! Who he's literally only heard of for the first time! Bob is just that good.

Sigh. It reminds me of this interview with Billy Joel I saw once, where he was talking about taking some late in life piano lessons, just to brush up, and as he was noodling around the teacher goes "you know that's Mozart, don't you?" Amazingly, Billy Joel, who is also just that good, was simply messing around on the piano and came up with the same thing as Mozart! Just amazing!

Mould does cover "Shoot Out the Lights" a few years later iirc

On the tribute album? That was X. Mould did "Turning Of The Tide" there.

Mould too.

He told me about neve having heard Thompson before Workbook too, when we spoke in 2020. I don't know, it checks out! He never said it like "I had that sound before him", more that he was initially totally ignorant of this complex music he was growing to love, being some scuzzy punk rat raised on the Beatles and the Beach Boys.

Like I said, I really didn't like the book. But I do really like Bob as an interviewee - he's very engaging, very engaged, self-deprecating at times but also passionate.

"I had that sound before I heard of him", I mean - he wasn't trying to obscure a debt of influence he owed, more reeling at the fact that he'd never consciously heard of this guy whose style he'd natively worked his own way towards.

I've interviewed him a couple of times, and yeah, he can be a good interview.

I do believe that he had never heard Richard Thompson before, I was reacting more to the gratuitous humblebrag of him picking up an acoustic guitar and then, what do you know, sounding at all close to one of the greatest and most distinctive guitarists of all time.

A subsequent humblebrag comes when someone tells him "A Good Idea" sounds like the Pixies, and gosh, he'd never noticed that before! "There was an unconscious homage too: I didn’t realize the similarities between “A Good Idea” and the Pixies’ “Debaser” until Sugar was riding around America during the summer 1992 dates. I simultaneously laughed and gasped at the horror of having accidentally pilfered Kim Deal’s bass line." Earlier in the book he opens for the Pixies as a solo act, and mentions "I had a few conversations with Charles (aka Black Francis) from the Pixies. We treated each other as equals, a very cordial interaction." Well, yeah, duh. Pixies owed tons to Husker Du, it's part of the lore, and Mould later even mentions the famous Pixies musicians wanted ad. So Mould really didn't need to namedrop in that manner. It reeks of insecurity, as does his claim that Metallica were supposedly fans (so?), or the backhanded namedrop of meeting the Clash in the early HD years, "they were nice chaps, but very intense, as if they were very aware of their importance."

It's hard to know what's up with some of this, maybe it's Azerrad's doing. Like when he writes that the fourth single from "Copper Blue" "would be the upbeat and catchy “If I Can’t Change Your Mind.”" Who writes about their own songs that way?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 23 January 2023 03:44 (one year ago) link

Ha, I can kinda picture him saying "upbeat and catchy" through clenched teeth and a rictus smile.

Could be a lot more obnoxious. I stopped watching Quentin Tarantino's interviews because I got sick of listening to him talk about his own work like he was his own biggest fan.

The problem is that the most interesting personality in the band - and the one most likely to write the most illuminating account, bias and all - is no longer with us.

Master of Treacle, Monday, 23 January 2023 17:33 (one year ago) link

I say illuminating - Greg is in a unique position in that he’s neither Grant but Bob but he’s said a fair amount from his perspective since the Azerrad 80s book and I don’t know if he ever had the interest in anything further

Master of Treacle, Monday, 23 January 2023 17:37 (one year ago) link

Neither Grant *nor Bob

Re “history as written by the victors” point upthread, I think it’s sometimes unfortunate that the last word from an insiders POV is often from the person who in many ways I’d read last, but OTOH we could easily have nothing.

Master of Treacle, Monday, 23 January 2023 17:43 (one year ago) link

There's a great oral history on the '80 Minneapolis scene by Magnet, but the Hüsker Dü parts do get uncomfortable in how contentious they are:

https://magnetmagazine.com/2005/06/12/a-tale-of-twin-cities-husker-du-the-replacements-and-the-rise-and-fall-of-the-80s-minneapolis-scene/

For example:

Norton: When Bob said we were going to do the individual songwriter credits, I thought it was just Bob being pissed off at Grant, not realizing I was the only one who thought the songs the three of us worked on were collaborations. I mean, it said, “All songs by Hüsker Dü.” Bob went back and changed it, so he got all the money.

Hart: Bob can stink up a room without saying a word. The guy has an intimidation factor that’s exponentially greater than anyone I’ve ever met in my life. He can loathe you through a wall. Bob had all of this contempt. It was like, “Why are you in a band with me if you fucking hate me so much?”

-

Mould: When David committed suicide, that was the beginning of the end. Everyone sort of retreated into their own corners and dealt with that in their own particular ways.

Hart: That makes a great fucking story. Bob, I’m sorry your friend died and everything, but you’re still a prick.

-

Hart: Bob said, “It’s up to you, Grant. Should we go on and play, or do you just want to head home?” And I’m like, “Hell, man, let’s go play.” “Well, Grant, we already canceled it.” “OK, so you wanted to give me the fucking opportunity to think you gave a fuck.”

-

Norton: I was pissed off at Grant. I was pissed off at Bob, too. It got to the point with Bob that I realized I had nothing in common with him. It was obvious he didn’t give a shit about me anymore, so whatever. It was fine.

-

Norton: Grant would say he quit the band in December when we were on the last tour. Then Bob got himself a lawyer and had himself removed from the contract. So according to Grant, he broke the band up. According to Bob, he quit the band. Bob would probably say he fired me. Leading up to when Bob withdrew from the contract, I had had conversations with him about me and him keeping the band together with a new drummer. At the same time, Bob told Grant, “Let’s you and me keep the band going and kick Greg out and get a new bass player.” Basically, it comes down to this: Who do you believe? I don’t doubt Bob had plans for a solo career and this was a great time for him to get it started.

(I should add, this was published in 2005, when relations between all three were probably at an all-time low.)

I'm essentially hate reading this thing at this point, but gah, when he hits his pro wrestling writing stint, or dalliance with electronic music, or the death of his fucking dog, he just becomes even more insufferable. He's always right, only he knows what's going, all he's doing is the right thing, why do other people keep messing it up? He alludes to the lawsuit Hart and Norton tried to file to get the SST rights:

I offered to pay for the lawsuit, but in return Grant and Greg would have to stay uninvolved so that I could sue SST myself without encumbrances, changes, or midstream indecision. I had Josh Grier draw up an offer for a one-time payment of $15,000 each to Grant and Greg. As ever, they would retain co-ownership of the Hüsker Dü name, but would be silent partners in this lawsuit.

I didn’t care about the name Hüsker Dü, nor holding sole ownership of the SST catalog. I had, and still have, no interest in the name Hüsker Dü or in recreating or revisiting that part of my life. But while conducting research for this book, I found and reviewed the document, and it most certainly appeared as if I was trying to buy them out. And yet it meant so little to me that I’d forgotten about it until seeing the document.

Yeah, no shit, Bob.
