At that age, I think they're a sit-down act. Only so many times you can stand around with goth kids bopping around.

yknow, after all these years i could consider that. i have never seen him and i don't really listen to him all that frequently, but when i do it seems like it would translate well to a live setting. and i'd like to see that.

Nothing but Thrill Jockey for me until/unless I have income again. Will be the first music show I've been to since Deerhoof early last year (yes, because I've been gone from Chicago but oldmanism should not be discounted as a root cause).

I saw Cave at the Chicago Theater 8-9 years ago and it worked great. Second song in, he pointed at a latecomer in the first row and then sang the whole song pointing at the guy.

Just bought 2 tix for 6organs at bottle w/o checking with my significant other - sure hope she's down for it (she's got a lot of grading to do and it's already kicking her ass). Love the new 6organs rekkid. And it's an added bonus that Scott Tuma is opening (big old Souled American fan - they started and used to live in my college town, Normal, IL - they're big in Germany!). Eh, this could wind up being a useful thread for me (assuming ILXors don't find me to be a total PITA @ the Thrill Jockey show). For whatever reason, musical interests are not a thing I share with most of my friends and I can never motivate myself to fly solo at a Musical Revue.

I find myself flying solo too frequently and it's ok, but

lots of my irl friends either don't share my musical interests (most) or they are unable/uninterested in seeing live performances for whatever reason. it's branch out my friend group or risk being a lone weirdo forever.

I will be at 6 Organs this weekend
and maybe at the Thrill Jockey show
and that's it.

Though thinking about going to the Veronica Falls show in March. Assuming new album is quality, etc.

I don't go to many shows, but I just went through the whole upcoming show list on ohmyrockness (is that the most comprehensive list?) I only found one I would potentially go to. Sort of disappointing, usually I can find a handful.

Weird, I've been listening to Azita today for the first time in eons.

Part of the reason I don't see much live music anymore is that it seems like most of the artists I like are playing at bigger venues than I usually prefer, or else they don't seem like they'd be that interesting in a live setting.

Like: I dig Tame Impala and think they'd be fun to see, but at the Vic? GTFO.

The one show lately that has caught my eye -- apart from that Thrill Jockey event -- is Shuggie Otis at Lincoln Hall in April. I've heard conflicting reports about what he's like these days, but I do love Inspiration Information.

Jessie Ware at Schubas could be interesting, too.

Trombonist Jeb Bishop has two 50th birthday gigs featuring pretty much everyone in the Chicago free jazz scene. You'd be daft not to go, seriously.

Set 2 with Daisy/Rempis/McBride definitely going to be great. Engines has never disappointed live or recorded.

the only difference is that the fri show is 9 - 1 and the sat show is 8 - 12. because of that, i feel like friday is a hotter show and better attended, and saturday is a little more chill?

Old Town is bad about putting sellout notices on their site proper, I've had the same thing where it doesn't show up as sold out until I actually go to buy a ticket.

burlington shows ime start on time, but somehow I always ended up going on like thursday nights so maybe they run a tighter ship on school nights to keep the neighbors happy?

So an unexplained 90 min delay is abnormal? I'm still grouchy about Friday.

i should have asked that question 30 years ago, really.

I remember being blown away when I first moved to Chicago at how punctual the shows were. Shows in Richmond would routinely start an hour or two late. It sucked.

I think it's nice that there's a predictability to it -- you can trust start times, generally, almost regardless of venue (but I don't really go to like ~underground warehouse venues~ or whatever, mostly established venues where i have gone alone and not felt weird). also i think it's respectful toward musicians, who also deserve predictable working conditions.

I was kind of weirded out when I visited how punctual a show at the Metro was! I almost missed all the openers.

you learn that lesson 1x or at the most 1x at each new venue
i asked about the burlington bc i had never been there and i was bored to death for 90 minutes while i waited for the 3 bands to start
and then i got mad bc i went with the understanding that things start at/around (within 20-30 min) of the advertised start time
then i left and didn't see the bands i arrived on time to see (i got there at 9, maybe a few min after)

LL, I wish I lived in Chicago -- you would never lack for somebody willing to go to live shows with you.

i don't mind going alone 95% of the time and people do go with me occasionally
it's not bad unless i just sit there doodling on my grocery list for 90 min waiting for anything to happen

I'll be at Thalia for Killing Joke too Feb 9. For some reason, I plug into the Chicago show 'early warnings' more during the Holiday season. I'm just thankful that I live in such a music-rich city. I think 'stoked' is my most used ILX word, because of threads like this.

Anyone thinking of hitting Levitation Fest CH,ILL 2016 should do so 'cause Lightning Bolt has been added & they rule-ith. I'm a bit nervous about balancing some work projects & the 3 day pass, but I think it will be worth it, esp. as the top acts each day have face-melting performance potential. Would love to chat tunes w/ other ILX'rs if any go.
