chicago -- what shows are you going to?

passion it person (La Lechera), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 15:22 (eleven years ago) link

May see Azita on Thursday night at the Hideout.

2 Chain Pizzas (to go) (Eazy), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 15:23 (eleven years ago) link

Me: going to EB to see Six Organs of Admittance on Saturday
Also upcoming- Thrill Jockey birthday party. Not much time in between with other holiday obligations, unfortunately.

I wonder if anyone will post itt aside from us hehehe

passion it person (La Lechera), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 15:25 (eleven years ago) link

It kinda creeps me out to broadcast my location but I figured sometimes you gotta stick your neck out.

passion it person (La Lechera), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 15:28 (eleven years ago) link

apparently nick cave and the bad seeds are playing in april at the chicago theater, which is a sit-down venue - seems kinda weird but maybe cool?

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 15:30 (eleven years ago) link

At that age, I think they're a sit-down act. Only so many times you can stand around with goth kids bopping around.

yknow, after all these years i could consider that. i have never seen him and i don't really listen to him all that frequently, but when i do it seems like it would translate well to a live setting. and i'd like to see that.

passion it person (La Lechera), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 15:34 (eleven years ago) link

Nothing but Thrill Jockey for me until/unless I have income again. Will be the first music show I've been to since Deerhoof early last year (yes, because I've been gone from Chicago but oldmanism should not be discounted as a root cause).

Automatic For The Peehole (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 15:35 (eleven years ago) link

hey n - remember when that guy tripped on the platform at the swans show, spilled my beer ALL over the place (not on me, thankfully), gave me the world's most desperately sheepish face, and stumbled off without saying a word?

that was weird, huh?

passion it person (La Lechera), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 15:37 (eleven years ago) link

thrill jockey night is gonna be huge, just wait
i have high hopes
even if it's not as great as i expect it to be (it won't be), getting there (through the next few weeks) will be more fun if i think it's going to be a blowout birthday party massacre.

passion it person (La Lechera), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 15:38 (eleven years ago) link

yeah. that platform at the metro is treacherous. he was probably just really embarrassed.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 15:40 (eleven years ago) link

I saw Cave at the Chicago Theater 8-9 years ago and it worked great. Second song in, he pointed at a latecomer in the first row and then sang the whole song pointing at the guy.

blues bras (Eazy), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 15:40 (eleven years ago) link

Just bought 2 tix for 6organs at bottle w/o checking with my significant other - sure hope she's down for it (she's got a lot of grading to do and it's already kicking her ass). Love the new 6organs rekkid. And it's an added bonus that Scott Tuma is opening (big old Souled American fan - they started and used to live in my college town, Normal, IL - they're big in Germany!). La Lechera, I'll bring your A.Whigs bootlegs!

Yaaay! I thought you had forgotten! Thanks.
Looooove the new 6 Organs too. Good to know about Scott Tuma. Blues Control is also good, but I don't know much about them beyond a few songs I listened to and enjoyed but then forgot about (like virtually everything).

See you there!! I'll be with two other chilxors.

Also how long before this becomes an ILM version of the regular Chicago thread?

dansplaining (dan m), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 17:22 (eleven years ago) link

Eh, this could wind up being a useful thread for me (assuming ILXors don't find me to be a total PITA @ the Thrill Jockey show). For whatever reason, musical interests are not a thing I share with most of my friends and I can never motivate myself to fly solo at a Musical Revue.

Automatic For The Peehole (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 18:21 (eleven years ago) link

I find myself flying solo too frequently and it's ok, but
you know

lots of my irl friends either don't share my musical interests (most) or they are unable/uninterested in seeing live performances for whatever reason. it's branch out my friend group or risk being a lone weirdo forever.

passion it person (La Lechera), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 18:30 (eleven years ago) link

I will be at 6 Organs this weekend
and maybe at the Thrill Jockey show
and that's it.

Though thinking about going to the Veronica Falls show in March. Assuming new album is quality, etc.

doctor, doctor, give me the news (askance johnson), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 19:51 (eleven years ago) link

I don't go to many shows, but I just went through the whole upcoming show list on ohmyrockness (is that the most comprehensive list?) I only found one I would potentially go to. Sort of disappointing, usually I can find a handful.

Sun 12/30 - 7:00 PM Screeching Weasel, The Queers, The Manges, Vatican Junkies - Reggie's Rock Club

There's another on NYE, but I assume that would be a clusterfrak.

Weird, I've been listening to Azita today for the first time in eons.

Sax Blatterday (jaymc), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 23:27 (eleven years ago) link

Part of the reason I don't see much live music anymore is that it seems like most of the artists I like are playing at bigger venues than I usually prefer, or else they don't seem like they'd be that interesting in a live setting.

Like: I dig Tame Impala and think they'd be fun to see, but at the Vic? GTFO.

The one show lately that has caught my eye -- apart from that Thrill Jockey event -- is Shuggie Otis at Lincoln Hall in April. I've heard conflicting reports about what he's like these days, but I do love Inspiration Information.

I don't live in Chicago but I came here to post that all you Chicago ppl should go to the Green Mill tomorrow and Saturday nights (I feel happy knowing I can mention this from the thread heading). Trombonist Jeb Bishop has two 50th birthday gigs featuring pretty much everyone in the Chicago free jazz scene. You'd be daft not to go, seriously.

Set 2 with Daisy/Rempis/McBride definitely going to be great. Engines has never disappointed live or recorded.

5/20, $3 with rsvp, should be awesome

i don't know why i bothered starting this thread but hey here it is and i'm trying to plan ahead

Mayor Manuel (La Lechera), Monday, 21 April 2014 13:35 (nine years ago) link

burlington shows ime start on time, but somehow I always ended up going on like thursday nights so maybe they run a tighter ship on school nights to keep the neighbors happy?

dan m, Monday, 21 April 2014 14:30 (nine years ago) link

espring (amateurist), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 05:46 (nine years ago) link

I remember being blown away when I first moved to Chicago at how punctual the shows were. Shows in Richmond would routinely start an hour or two late. It sucked.

Immediate Follower (NA), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 14:35 (nine years ago) link

I think it's nice that there's a predictability to it -- you can trust start times, generally, almost regardless of venue (but I don't really go to like ~underground warehouse venues~ or whatever, mostly established venues where i have gone alone and not felt weird). also i think it's respectful toward musicians, who also deserve predictable working conditions.

Mayor Manuel (La Lechera), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 15:30 (nine years ago) link

I was kind of weirded out when I visited how punctual a show at the Metro was! I almost missed all the openers.

a strange man (mh), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 15:33 (nine years ago) link

you learn that lesson 1x or at the most 1x at each new venue
i asked about the burlington bc i had never been there and i was bored to death for 90 minutes while i waited for the 3 bands to start
and then i got mad bc i went with the understanding that things start at/around (within 20-30 min) of the advertised start time
then i left and didn't see the bands i arrived on time to see (i got there at 9, maybe a few min after)

Mayor Manuel (La Lechera), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 15:44 (nine years ago) link

LL, I wish I lived in Chicago -- you would never lack for somebody willing to go to live shows with you.

Alvarius B. Goode (WilliamC), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 15:47 (nine years ago) link

i don't mind going alone 95% of the time and people do go with me occasionally
it's not bad unless i just sit there doodling on my grocery list for 90 min waiting for anything to happen

Mayor Manuel (La Lechera), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 16:00 (nine years ago) link

but thank you! there is no shortage of shows to see around here, that's for sure.
