Aluk Todolo (French Krautrock inspired Metal)

So this awesome album made #9 in metal poll. Been a fan for a few years now but they get better and better. Its instrumental so it should appeal to those who are frightened of metal vox. How do i get you all to check it out? By telling you of the krautrock influence!

Here are some reviews

The Quietus

An hour and a half of technically adept instrumental near-black metal with the metonymically beating heart of krautrock; Occult Rock has the potential to upset a lot of people – not in the way that Liturgy put people's corpse paint so continually and hilariously out of joint ("Wah! They're just soulless hipsters, they're not black metal at all, they're just play acting at it. Waaaah!!" like it's a fucking secret) but they too do seem primarily concerned with the transcendental nature of the black metal beast. The difference is that not only have this French trio served significant time in traditional black metal circles (playing in the likes of Diamatregon and Vediog Svaor) and spent years honing their craft, Occult Rock still carries that intangible undercurrent of nihilism and despair; 'I' might be ten minutes of blast-beat black metal channelled through Hawkwind's third eye, yet 'VII' sounds like early Can haunting a deserted, plague struck village, and it totally fucking works.

The Wire

With the goal to create a timeless, organic mix of krautrock’s strangeness and black metal’s coldness, combining Striborg with Faust, Burzum with This Heat, S.V.E.S.T. with Paul Chain, or Ildjarn with Can, Aluk Todolo conjures rabid obsessive rhythms and abyssal disharmonic guitars, subliminal spiritualist vibrations and bizarre, magick summonings. By reducing psychedelic improvisation to a bare, telluric instrumentation, and basking in the archaic rawness of lo-fi production, the trio elaborates on an audio ritual meant to be monolithic and stabbing, hypnotic but unpredictable, minimalist yet teeming. Aluk Todolo features members from the legendary, underground black metal acts, Diamatregon (tUMULt) & Vediog Svaor (Paragon International).

Been slowly getting into this album after seeing it come up somewhere (maybe the year-end critic's poll thread?); v.much my cup of tea, and annoyed that I forgot to vote for 'em in the ILx albums poll.

Downloaded this wednesday evening, listened on thursday's commute - I think all car drivers should listen to this on their commute! Thanks for the heads up, pfunk, it's a great though parts III to V were a bit plodding at times...

I have only listened to this while sitting on a chair in a room, and that doesn't seem right. It sounded pretty great, and I liked the album, but that's far from my preferred listening environment. I need to download it so I can listen to it while walking in the snow. Today might be a good day for that!

Just wanted to mention that I picked this sprawling release up and spent some time with it. It was a perfect release to get into after digesting the My Bloody Valentine release, oddly enough.

I bought this a week or so ago inspired in no small part by this thread, pfunkboy (I was intrigued by the review in the Wire, and this thread just consolidated my desire top check it out). I forgot to convey my thanks -- it's a fucking great album.

I have been listening to this a bit recently and am in love with I,IV and VII and keep skipping inbetween. VII is insane it is like Link Wray jamming with Neu, it really is some wonderful shit.

Yes -- that was an additional encouragement. Listening to it right now on headphones.

Baltimore indie label Public Guilt is closing up shop and selling off inventory.

Among the many things you can get for bare-bones prices is the debut Aluk Todolo CD Descension for only $2.

Oh, so I did start a thread on them after all. Dunno why I didn't revive it when Voix came out?
