we ready, we ready, we ready: Bunji Garlin's soca gesamtkunstwerk "Differentology"

Big-tent anthem brings together rave synths, plaintive Spanish guitar, piano chords, bass, sunrises, digital handclaps, ~vibes~, and massive choruses and is glorious:

Thread is a week late for Carnival but oh well.

booming track

graduate of the Suzanne Moore School of Apologies (Noodle Vague), Monday, 18 February 2013 21:52 (eleven years ago) link

Bunji said he was somewhat confused when he was told the song was on the chart and moreso that it was in second position. He initially thought it was a Caribbean chart or something like that until he saw the band that was at the top position.

"I feel elated. I feel like today is my birthday. I was slightly confused. We were trying to figure out if it was a specific category like a West Indian chart, but then I saw Maroon 5 on top and Rihanna below and I realised this is the main chart," Bunji said.

Bless. It's his strongest song in ages. Really good to see it blowing up.

it's basically balearic soca

lex pretend, Monday, 18 February 2013 22:04 (eleven years ago) link

i mean the PIANO CHORDS, MY GOD

lex pretend, Monday, 18 February 2013 22:04 (eleven years ago) link

Woah what chart is this #2 on?

rob, Monday, 18 February 2013 22:08 (eleven years ago) link

Having checked the follow up story, it turns out he issued a correction the following day. Apparently everyone in T&T thought he was no.2 on the international iTunes chart but that was only because iTunes started displaying a separate Trinidad chart the day before. He was just no.2 on the national chart.

It seems to be taking off a bit in Europe though.

Pretty happy for this to turn up while the antipodean summer's still in fine form; immense.

Since this thread probably won't stay on SNA for too much longer, I might as well post my other favorite recent soca discovery, Olatunji's "Bam Bam," which is like the hyperactive, kind of crass little brother to Differentology (not that they sound at all alike):

haha, did you change your display name in reference to that remix? I was just about to write that it was a shame that they cut the Spanish guitar in place of that drop.

rob, Monday, 8 April 2013 19:03 (eleven years ago) link

haha no it was from the madonna poll thread (re: "deeper and deeper")

WHY is this thread not filled with enraptured ilxors, this song is special!

maybe they don't understand what gesamtkunstwerk means

Been sleeping on the thread but not the song, it is awesome yes.

Tim F, Monday, 8 April 2013 19:15 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, I was hoping "gesamkunstwerk" would be intriguing, but maybe people think it signifies some kind of misguided fusion of soca and Wagner. I think it fits though--this morning I was admiring Nigel Rojas's metal low roar backing vocals, so subtly buried in the mix and such an outlier.

can someone please add ***ANTHEM ALERT*** to the title

just sayin, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 11:29 (ten years ago) link

I was a little disappointed when I first heard this, mostly because the phrase "Balearic soca" gave me expectations of something ridiculously euphoric, but now I love it for what it is. Like, those piano chords are actually really melancholy but at the same time they help elevate the song to greatness.

lex pretend, Monday, 28 October 2013 16:45 (ten years ago) link

Yeah it was a good night. Going to work on 2hrs sleep less good but it was all worth it for that moment. Esp because I have no recollection of ever playing or mentioning this track in this guy's presence (although I guess I must have) and as far as I'm aware he's mainly into d&b so it was kinda ridic that he put on EXACTLY the tune I needed at the EXACT right time

Garlin has a whole thing going on with vikings. His album is called The Viking and other tracks have referenced it too. You can kind of see it in action in the Differentology video:

need to hear this. the tracks that I already know (title track, Carnival Tabanca, Red Light District, Truck on D Road) range from amazing (at this point I listen to Tabanca more often than Differentology) to quite good, though I wish they'd used the original Truck.

rob, Thursday, 28 August 2014 20:08 (nine years ago) link

I still need to hear it too.

curmudgeon, Friday, 29 August 2014 16:22 (nine years ago) link

Halfway through the album and it's loads of fun. There's a verse on 'West Indian Jungle' that is quite astounding in both its wordplay and its nerdishness.
