Fuck them.

I'm sure many will agree. I feel this is a valid thread. Bye.

reckon this thread is inherently linked to RFD: Light-hearted, whimsical indie hipster music that seemed specifically manufactured for Apple commercials

Just like any instrument really, they can be used for evil.

No, looks interesting!

Tom D (Tom D.), Friday, 26 April 2013 12:59 (thirteen years ago)

Think Tiny Tim acknowledged him as an influence, even had him sing at his wedding to Miss Vicky- on the Tonight Show!- which caused late career revival.

The Cosimo Code of the Woosters (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 26 April 2013 13:23 (thirteen years ago)

His original version of "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" from 1929, which is what he sang forty years later on The Tonight Show at that wedding, is awesome.

Ukes didn't particularly annoy me until Five Years Time by Noah & The Whale, it was downhill from there

PaulTMA, Friday, 26 April 2013 18:47 (thirteen years ago)

I dunno why it bothers me, but... It's ukulele, with 2 'u's and 2 'e's. Not ukelele, with 3 'e's. ahem.....

lol VG:

You know that scene with John Belushi and Stephen Bishop in "Animal House?" That's how I feel inside whenever I hear a ukulele.

perfectly fine instrument imo, those shitty indie bands would be just as shitty playing a different instrument. Hate the player.

ur problem here veg is that smashing up a ukulele would look so wimpy, even in smashing it you'd be submitting to its sweet and harmless ways.

It's gotta be tough to hitchhike with a guitarron or something though.

how's life, Friday, 26 April 2013 19:01 (thirteen years ago)

the ukelele is really not a great instrument, so limited in comparison really every other string instrument & it's signature tone/sound is not great.

ums (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 26 April 2013 19:13 (thirteen years ago)

I'd be down with haoles suddenly being obsessed with guitarrons. Guitarrons are badass.

sandra dayo connor (The Reverend), Friday, 26 April 2013 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

ukelele's are pretty much the worst stringed instrument you could think of, very limited range of notes, small neck makes it easy to pick up but difficult to really achieve anything playingwise, small body doesn't have resonance, got that irritating plinky plunk kind of thing, it's really an "effect" instrument like you just want that one specific sound it does as an effect

unless you just kneejerk to the "ooooh any instrument is great it's just got to be in the right hands", i mean there's a reason talentless indie hacks love it and there are reasons it sucks

ums (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 26 April 2013 19:25 (thirteen years ago)

sandra dayo connor (The Reverend), Friday, 26 April 2013 19:28 (thirteen years ago)

xxp it's kinda that uselessness that's making it useful for me lately (and well also that my guitar is 500 miles away) - the flat, characterless tone seems to me a good initial input when your intention anyway is to obliterate that initial tone through swathing in in piles of effects. It's a good blank to sculpt something distinct out of. But I don't rly know what I'm talking about so it's possible there's some essential dumbassery in what I'm saying.

the kind of man who best draws girls' eyeballs (Merdeyeux), Friday, 26 April 2013 19:30 (thirteen years ago)

i'd be curiuos to hear heavily efx ukelele, do you have sound samples?

ums (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 26 April 2013 19:43 (thirteen years ago)

not rly, my amp tried to electrocute me before i had really taken advantage of my new pedal purchases. this bit of fiddling around is as far as i got https://soundcloud.com/eeeeeein/ukecho

I rock a baritone uke that has been in my family since the early 60's, but that is a different beast more akin to a tenor guitar. ukes are tuned like banjos iirc, and are therefore alien to me.
