i think i'm gonna vote for holy night fever... love it when the drums come in

flopson, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 20:18 (eleven years ago) link

I voted for Top Tim Rubies, which is not really like the rest of this record.
I was obsessed with this when it came out, now I don't listen to it (or any Deerhoof, really) at all.

lots of killer drums and guitar here but it's holy night fever for me on account of the hilarity quotient.

i love this album so much mostly because they just sound like they're having a lot of fun. the only track i don't love is probably the last, too serious

Probably the best band of 2002 and 2003 and 2004 and maybe 2005 too

incredible album. top tim rubies is the #1 hit of a much better universe. i'm going for the last trumpeter swan, though. it's odd that it never gets mentioned much (even back in the day it always seemed overlooked) when it's the epic centerpiece of the album. greg's drumming on this one is even more fantastic than it usually is. the tension he builds is incredible.

by the way deerhoof are the nicest people ever. i drove to lawrence/ks to see them in 2003 or so. i didn't realize the show was 21+, and at the time i was only 20, and looked about 12 tops. the drummer, greg, saw a bummed out looking little kid (me) slumping around out front and i told him about the problem. he let me carry in some of his equipment and then acted like i was a friend of the band or something so that i could stay inside. awesome guy.

i've never listened to any of the albums before this, are they any good?

flopson, Friday, 7 June 2013 00:32 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, you would probably like them.

If I could just see the Deerhoof/XBXRX tour video again it may rekindle the flame.

Trip Maker, Friday, 7 June 2013 01:15 (eleven years ago) link

halfbird was a sort of rareish album (tour only, japan only? something like that), and it was before reveille, and it was pretty great iirc. i actually wasn't a big fan of holdy paws or the man the king the girl, even at the peak of my fandom. definitely more on the spastic side of the spectrum, but missing a lot of the avant-pop elements.

Z S, Friday, 7 June 2013 01:25 (eleven years ago) link

I was crazy about all that stuff, honestly. And their first seven inch, too. Did you see them at the Ranch, Z? That may as well have been the last show there. I can't recall if it actually was, though.

Trip Maker, Friday, 7 June 2013 01:31 (eleven years ago) link

The first Deerhoof single is just Greg Saunier and Rob Fist, I think. It is pummeling noise rock, pretty different even from those first full lengths. Fisk went on to form Badgerlore, which seems to have a rotating lineup including Ben Chasny and Tom Carter, I think?

Trip Maker, Friday, 7 June 2013 01:40 (eleven years ago) link

shit Rob FISK. FISK!

Trip Maker, Friday, 7 June 2013 01:40 (eleven years ago) link

i saw them at the ranch, yep! that was a great show, although i felt bad because it was my incredibly drunk old friend from farmington that nearly ruined the show by attempting to mosh and then rolling around on the floor and even running into satomi so that she had to stop a song. i was so fucking pissed at him for that.

best show i saw from them (out of a grand total of 3 shows) was in Grinnell, Iowa, a basement show at some house. there was no stage or anything, they just stood in the corner and astonished everyone.

Ah, college.

listned to the man the king the girl last nite... definitely not into it. kind of amazing not just bc of how much they improved but how briskly they shook off the 90's
