Cyrus is quick to point out that, having left one bandwagon, she's not about to jump on another. "I've always wanted country-rock influences, but now I'm moving over to a more urban side," she says. "It's not a hip-hop album, though-it's a pop album. I'm not coming in trying to rap. It's more like, 'I don't see any girls out there doing what Miguel and Frank Ocean are doing.'" Cyrus pauses, giggling. "We've been calling it 'count-step,' because it's like country, dubstep and a little trap," she says. "I love the Lumineers, but I also love French Montana, Juicy J, Wiz Khalifa and Dolly Parton. If you could put Dolly, some Adele and Juicy J together, you'd have that weird balance."

you people. "I'm moving to a more urban sound" is literally the same line every Disney/teenpop/boy band/girl band singer in history has given when promo-ing their solo work. it is as cliched as "it's our best album yet."
put another way: I don't like Miley's new single at all but there is no way she isn't receiving a disproportionate amount of shit because "Miley Cyrus" is still a punchline.

i dunno. a couple years ago Demi Lovato had that line and had some awkward Timbaland club songs on her album, but there was no twerking w/ Juicy J or whatever. even Britney working with the Neptunes back in the day was kind of polite and dignified in comparison to what Miley's doing.

even Britney working with the Neptunes back in the day was kind of polite and dignified in comparison to what Miley's doing.
i don't think the difference between this video and "i'm a slave 4 u" is that the latter is "polite and dignified" when britney was in the middle of a fucking orgy in that clip
― da croupier, Friday, 21 June 2013 01:38 (ten years ago) link
there's nothing undignified about orgies, necessarily. there is something undignified about that miley video, especially wrt the way she tries to incorporate elements of hip hop culture and imagery.

the better touchstone for miley is obv xtina's "dirrty" tho, both were going for that LOOK A FURRY thing rather than just sweaty humpa pumpa
― da croupier, Friday, 21 June 2013 01:41 (ten years ago) link
also if we're going to talk about a short-haired white lady in a white tank top incorporating elements of hip hop culture and imagery we should probably acknowledge gwen stefani.
― da croupier, Friday, 21 June 2013 01:56 (ten years ago) link
gwen pulls it off better. the reason this doesn't work isn't so much about cultural appropriation -- which is a fraught issue i don't want to get into bc i am not sure what my feelings are, really, on that topic as a whole -- as it as about the fact that the hip hop stuff seems lame and forced.
― Treeship, Friday, 21 June 2013 01:59 (ten years ago) link
britney and xtina similarly had swagger and stage presence. miley lacks charisma.
oh yeah it's definitely less spirited than xtina or gwen's forays
― da croupier, Friday, 21 June 2013 02:01 (ten years ago) link
i like the artier, surrealisty elements of that video sort of. although i don't really understand why miley cyrus is a pop star. that sounds harsh, but i don't think there is anything distinctive or compelling about her.

"It's both of them that is making it all about Nicki. She is just saying something is wrong here."
Um, Adam, Nicki did make it about her, as well as the bigger issue, from the off, specifically mentioning the Anaconda video. And the last two winners of best video were Miley and Taylor so if she didn't mean them who did she mean? The broader point stands but there was nothing selfless about it. She's a pop star pissed off about being snubbed - everything else she said stemmed from that.
Pretty sure she mixed up Kendrick and Rocky though, which is ugh.

She might have mixed up Kendrick and Asap but honestly, her point stands. Miley making songs about acid is treated differently from male artists making songs about acid. She's an incredibly easy target right now but there's no reason to bury her point about gender under the Miley is rascist lead.

― Spottie, Saturday, 5 September 2015 00:14 (eight years ago) link
Her awkwardness is not there, the new album is not psych or crazy or weird or anything it sounds like very safe and boring (stoned/spaced out) pop music. I made it til halfway through "Space Boots" before realizing it was just going to be this safe coffee house friendly music with the occasional line about weed and a viral marketing campaign. It sounds like a decent lofi attempt at pop but it is not weird or strange. Even compared to her pop contemporaries (esp Nicki Minaj).

^^^ this is exactly what I like about this record (except it's not really lofi at all, just has that aesthetic). I have been playing it in the background, it's relaxing and pretty, but not like wallpaper because every now and then there's a kinda clever lyric or production touch I can admire before going back to what I was doing.

Do we have to treat Kendrick and A$AP as one entity though? Kendrick is obviously leagues beyond almost everyone else these days. The A$AP album was DOA to me, as in there's no life in it. Miley Cyrus was sued for $300 million on Tuesday by Jamaican songwriter Michael May, who claims the singer’s 2013 hit “We Can’t Stop” infringes upon the a song he released in 1988 called “We Run Things,” according to Reuters.Cyrus is one of several writers credited on the song, along with coproducers Mike Williams (a.k.a.
