There's a ton of ancillary live shit they've done but I'm sticking with the core albums.

And no, I have no clue what I'm voting for yet. "Absolutes" would be the obvious choice though.

"Gardens of War" I never even got to hear!

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 20 July 2013 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

If enough people vote I'll consider a tracks poll, just saying

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 20 July 2013 21:34 (eleven years ago) link

man, it's crazy to see all their records lined up like that. they've made a ton of 'em! i haven't heard all of them, but i think i'm voting either absolutes or arrived in gold.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Saturday, 20 July 2013 22:56 (eleven years ago) link

ive not heard these in a while

arrived in gold i liked at the time but i cant remember what it sounds like

i will need to reinvestigate

Was it Arrived in Gold or Through The Panama what had the cover of "The Electrician on it? Anyway, that one. I also used to like playing their debut 7" on Freedom From at the wrong speed. Good band.

It was Through The Panama man

My prediction for top three (in no particular order and based on observed enthusiasm on the part of other fans I know):

City Of Straw
Arrived In Gold
Michigan Haters

FUN FACT: I bought Absolutes at Soundgarden in Baltimore in 2003, but what I really longed for was Michigan Haters, which Wire had praised. I was bummed until I got home and Absolutes knocked me on my ass. Would be several years until I finally got MH.

Absolutes followed very closely by City of Straw

This is tough. I haven't heard the most recent yet, may need to do that first, but I may be a City of Straw guy too.

bump

I interviewed these guys a few times, and Mark's answers to questions about lyrics on early albums were all "they're just words" but for City of Straw he had some definite themes in mind. I'll root around for the links

And there was another one, for signal to noise, which was print only (CoS era)

If you're gonna vote, vote soon, true believers.

I only have these,

Absolutes
City of Straw
Michigan Haters

Will listen again and vote.

have been listening to sightings on and off for about a week (along with swans, scott walker & demdike stare, lol). so far, city of straw and arrived in gold are the standouts. don't much care for the s/t or absolutes. funny how much the "rock" tracks on the latter sound like even more fucked-up-sounding cows.

I voted earlier but I can't remember if I went with Arrived in Gold or Through the Panama. Probably the latter.

This is it!

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 11:34 (eleven years ago) link

wended with city of straw

IIIrd Datekeeper (contenderizer), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 15:00 (eleven years ago) link

Absolutes, it's the one I listen to the most.

The righteousness of this song cannot be overstated:

I love how Hoffman's bass intro gives you absolutely no clue that you are gonna be hit with a straight up anthemic banger (the Sightings version of one at least).

grandavis, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:06 (eleven years ago) link

divided between 'michigan haters' and 'end times'. i don't listen to 'absolutes' for a long time, but my memory would position it as a serious contender. with that said, 'terribly well' is great and in due time might become my fav. and the lenghty track on 'future accidents' might be the best thing they've done so far.

never heard the record with tom smith and never cared much for the s/t or 'arrived in gold'. both 'through the panama' and 'city of straw' have they're gems - i.e. 'perforated' or 'tar and pine' - but drag a little bit, imho.

Thanks to everyone who voted. I may consider a tracks poll - if you're interested in that, please say so here. Voting would be for an extender period.

I forgot that I posted this, got no takers, started a tracks poll anyway.
