As per the opening post, Adam Clayton's always been my go-to guy when this question comes around but, tbh, I haven't paid any attention to U2 for years (let alone his bass playing) so maybe's he's gone all Jaco Pastorius in the interim

Until now I had a long held belief that Clayton composed the Mission Impossible theme song. I had no idea it was a TV series before the Tom Cruise films until I just googled it.
With regard to the question my cousin twice removed did an off the cuff remix of Wonderwall back in the 90's that became insanely popular in Latin America apparently. Still gets around 8k a year in royalties. So I'm probably guessing a remix artist?

If anything Jaco could have learned a thing or two from Clayton about not having a shitty bass tone, staying in the pocket, and not being a total wank.

i feel like this thread is a rockism trap because there've been so many stories the past few years about big EDM headliners who make outrageously huge sums of money for shows where they supposedly press 'play' on a pre-assembled mix and let a crazy light show entertain the crowd. that seems easier than playing a bass guitar for 3 hours every night.

I fucking love Judas Priest, from the extremes of the early shit through the thrash of Painkiller and of course the pop years of my youth.
But it's never once been because of an innovative, catchy bass line, dig?

Presumably most of them worked pretty hard on creating the music on the mix in the first place though.
― I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 14:08 (ten years ago) link
yeah could be? i guess with most of the big earners they're playing their own productions, not DJ mixes? i mean U2 does pretty epic album recording sessions, so even there i dunno if Clayton gets off easy. really i'm not sure if any performer deserves to be mentioned in this thread, just the act of getting on a stage nightly to do anything, giving interviews and maintaining a public profile, etc. seems pretty exhausting.
― deez the season (some dude), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 14:12 (ten years ago) link
Yeah I mean even if Deadmau5 does just press play he did most of the work in the studio creating all that in the first place, whereas the Coldplay bass player pretty much has to play one note for two bars over and over again.

From reading that New Yorker article, I'd say the hardest thing about being one of those EDM guys is staying awake/standing for long hours. Iirc, one of the guys was "working hard" on a new track on a laptop while he was being flown on a private plane from LA to Vegas for a gig.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 14:30 (ten years ago) link
I think those epic U2 et al. tours must be pretty exhausting, not just hanging out with Bono (and calling Bono Bono), but just traveling from place to place, away from friends and family, for months/years. That's what pushes people like Bill Wyman to quit the Rolling Stones. I suppose once you have more money than 99.99% of everybody, it all starts to feel like work.

If the Dixie Chicks documentary is an accurate portrayal of his production methods, he never actually sets foot in the studio. He listens to recordings the artists bring to his house and gives such invaluable insights as "That's a nice chorus" and "I like that part."
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 14:42 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, lately he seems pretty lazy. I've noticed more and more bands ostensibly working with Rick Rubin who leave the studio with only one or two tracks to show for their effort. Timberlake, U2, Weezer, Adele, Kanye, Rick Rubin ... it's like someone suggests Rick Rubin, and they all go "yeah, Rick Rubin!" and then they show up and he's just lying on the couch being fed grapes by the Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer and they're all "uh, I think we'll just do a track or two, thanks."

he might not have done "much" besides listen to the Yeezus tracks and suggest stripping it down (shorter songs + less of them + less tracks per song) but that was also probably the most important decision for that record.

Interview with Glen Matlock on his finances in the Telegraph today:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/fameandfortune/11092419/Glen-Matlock-Leaving-the-Sex-Pistols-cost-me-millions-of-pounds.html
Couple of brief excerpts:
And when we reformed in 1996 we did a reunion tour and I earned a lot from that. It worked out at £35,000 profit per person per show, and we did the best part of 100 shows, plus we’d get merchandising money and other things on top.
£35k (and that was per person per show) was a lot of money in 1996
(How much is your property worth?) A couple of million quid. It’s just a three-bed maisonette in Little Venice [in west London] with a small garden. I moved into it in 1995 and bought the place upstairs, then knocked it through and added more bedrooms. But I’m not a property speculator – I didn’t buy my flat as an investment, I bought it as somewhere to live.
and
(Apart from property, what’s the most expensive thing you’ve ever bought?)A private education for my two sons at the Ryde School on the Isle of Wight. That’s cost me £20,000 a year in school fees.

. Not coincidentally, he was the only Beatle who didn't almost go bankrupt.― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, December 4, 2013 3:49 AM (9 months ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Yep, it's in Peter Doggett's book (You Never Give Me Your Money, a depressing and essential read). His business manager, Dennis O'Brien, screwed him out of millions.

O'Brien stole most of Harrison's money, but that doesn't mean he was anywhere near close to bankruptcy. He just agreed to the Anthology series to restock his coffers.

By agreeing to participate in Apple's documentary, the surviving Beatles were, consciously or not, sacrificing some of their carefully guarded privacy. But Harrison could no longer afford isolation. By late 1992 he had been advised that he was on the verge of bankruptcy, as HandMade's debts ate into his capital. It transpired that for years Harrison's wealth had been cross-collateralised to finance HandMade's features: in effect he was liable for 100 per cent of the company's losses, but only 50 per cent of its profits. 'To have someone sit at your table with your family every night and then betray your trust is one of the worst experiences imaginable,' he commented later. After almost 20 years O'Brien was removed as Harrison's manager and a director of Apple in early 1993 -- Harrison assuming the latter role himself.

Surely the answer to "easiest job for the most money" is "child of one of the Beatles."
