There are like two billion Beyonce threads so I didn't know which one to post the preview for the "Grown Woman" video.

i'm so confused

prolego, Saturday, 7 December 2013 23:46 (ten years ago) link

Hope there's a version of the video without the '90s VHS tape aesthetic.

Murgatroid, Saturday, 7 December 2013 23:47 (ten years ago) link

it's as if she felt she wasn't trolling hard enough with song snippets she had to start dropping video snippets

i hate her

i miss matthew :(

prolego, Saturday, 7 December 2013 23:50 (ten years ago) link

if "grown woman" ends up being the first single i'll be pretty fucking annoyed tbh

i mean, i know that sounds ridiculous and entitled, but, this song has been floating around for most of the year! why couldn't she have just released it earlier.

mums go off when i enter the building (monotony), Saturday, 7 December 2013 23:58 (ten years ago) link

yeah same here -- "Grown Woman" never seemed remotely promising so if she's circling back to that, ugh.

someone posted a Hot 97 playlist recently that said "Standing On The Sun" is their #4 song right now -- did a full-length studio version of that song ever actually get released? i loved the snippet in the ad.

some dude, Sunday, 8 December 2013 03:03 (ten years ago) link

idk about its official radio release status but just in terms of hearing it then (short answer) yes. studio leak chronology goes like this afaiui

yeah!! but like the semi-comedic ease with herself in that makes it seem way more truthfully, engagingly grown than the gameface bluster of the og

they play "standing on the sun" on hot 97 frequently, idk what version or if it's official or what

it's gonna be funny watching people who were wretching over timberlake letting timbaland produce his entire album have to turn around and act like beyonce just dropped manna from heaven w/ an album that tim is gonna have like 6 beats on

I pretty much gave myself over to Spotify in 2013. I rarely listen to music any other way. I spend the $10/month or whatever for unlimited ad-free listening.

That said, I'm really tempted to buy this right now.

Well, I thought it was great to find the hot-sauce thing seemingly as ubiquitous in the US as it is here. Ancona hot pepper sauce is definitely a part of the black British experience, including having an emergency supply stashed in your mum's handbag for those awkwardly bland restaurant meals, and that's as true for ppl w/West African roots as it is for ppl with Caribbean/West Indian roots. Can't think of a blatant pop-culture example apart from a woman on Come Dine With Me who kept whipping it out at the other contestants' homes.

I cook plenty of West Indian meat dishes (jerk chicken, curry chicken, curry goat, oxtail stew) because a) love them and b) a Jamaican took pity on me and took me through some of her family recipes about 10 years ago. No matter how FIRE the basic dish, someone will always want to put hot sauce on top. I have a habanero sauce (amongst many) in my cupboard that makes grown-ups weep.

jedi slimane (suzy), Wednesday, 10 February 2016 17:08 (eight years ago) link

people carrying around hot sauce is definitely a thing

i have a colleague who is often sought after during work parties because she has the hot sauce in her bag

hot sauce in the bag always makes me think of my jazz mentor Richard Davis, who always wears a fanny pack containing a bottle of Tabasco.

I apparently phrased my initial post poorly so let me try again: other than 'Top Five', can anyone think of a prior-to-'Formation' pop culture reference or song lyric that associates carrying a bottle of hot sauce as being a black and/or southern signifier?

― ulysses, Wednesday, February 10, 2016 11:40 AM (2 hours ago)

now that you mention it, beyonce (or whoever wrote this song) definitely had this scene from "undercover brother" in mind

i was loving this song the other day - and that battle cry of EGGS BACON GRITS!! - but then the revelation halfway through that Lil Mama only eats turkey bacon was kind of a letdown for some reason. i mean it's fine and she gives religious reasons for avoiding swine but it kinda took the wind out of the chorus cuz who has a turkey bacon battle cry? still like the video a lot though.

During Jim Crow, Black people could pick up food at establishments that served white people, but they often could not eat in them. When custom demanded that Black people be served separately from whites, they were often required to have their own utensils, serving dishes, and condiments. So it was customary for Black families who were traveling to carry everything they might possibly need so that (with the help of the Green Book, the guide that helped Black travelers eat, sleep, and move as safely as possible) they could navigate America in relative comfort.

we took hot sauce to Germany on our second trip there because they didn't have hot sauce and we were used to eating a little hot sauce here and there. our motivation was, we wanted some hot sauce on our food and weren't sure we'd be able to get it otherwise. in Germany they put paprika on stuff when they want to eat spicy food. then eight hours later they shit onto porcelain shelves for the whole world to see

Turkish shops all over Germany can give you all the spicy sauces you'll ever need (and your subsequent shit-on-a-shelf will be that bit more interesting).
