three weeks pass...

is L.I.E.S. idm? it is, right?

the late great, Monday, 13 January 2014 04:51 (ten years ago) link

i think most of it is intentionally straddling the space between home listening and club music

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Monday, 13 January 2014 07:49 (ten years ago) link

there is a lot of stuff out there that intentionally straddles the space between home listening and club music

i mean that a lot of stuff on LIES sounds like it could have been published by rephlex or skam in 1995

i associate old school idm more with trying to "push the envelope" in terms of rhythmic complexity, whereas LIES as doing more weird things with texture and keeping the rhythmic backbone somewhat more straightforward. that's obv a generalization tho.

Can a track be IDM if there's a 4/4 kick drum all the way through?

paolo, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 21:29 (ten years ago) link

i've only heard the ron morelli album and it sounds like monotonon,.. so... proto idm in spirit with an industrial tint

Like it just sounds like early 80s sheffield dudes playing around with boxes

Ñaka Ñaka - Juan Pestañas has been pushing my buttons by having a track which sounds like 3 of the 4/4-kicked tracks on SAWI mashed into one, so... maybe?

yeah i always linked l.i.e.s. with '80s industrial more than anything else. i hear some early idm textures but it seems less about complexity and more about raw thrust

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 23:40 (ten years ago) link

A lot of L.I.E.S. records are produced for mixing as well. Many are straight up DJ tracks, if hazy, noisy and distorted. That complicates the home-listening angle.

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 20:18 (ten years ago) link

car listening, on the other hand, is excellent

Holly Herndon is back, sounding not a little like Paul Lansky.

Into that. She's obviously checked out the ILM poll and decided she needs to make some pop moves.

seven months pass...

what was all this crazy talk that IDM can't have 4/4?

dan selzer, Friday, 5 September 2014 18:01 (nine years ago) link

whoever it was probably meant four-on-the-floor

festival culture (Jordan), Friday, 5 September 2014 18:22 (nine years ago) link

That's what I meant too actually. Still silly

dan selzer, Friday, 5 September 2014 19:53 (nine years ago) link

some people when they say IDM they mean the early 90s detroit-y stuff, some people mean late 90s laptop drill and bass/autechre clones etc.

brimstead, Friday, 5 September 2014 21:05 (nine years ago) link

guys remember IDM?

╲╱\/╲/\╱╲╱\/\ (gr8080), Friday, 5 September 2014 21:05 (nine years ago) link

It's all cool, but if people are just thinking of laptop drill and bass/autechre clones they should learn some goddamn history and study IDMs pre-late 90s heritage and immerse themselves in the early 90s sounds, because that stuff's better anyway.

LOL countdown to lecture about b12 ...

the late great, Friday, 5 September 2014 22:59 (nine years ago) link

They recently put all their stuff up on iTunes in a series of "archives", including some of the associated acts. Black Dog did something similar.

dan selzer, Friday, 5 September 2014 23:03 (nine years ago) link

yeah I got all those on CD, if you stick their spines together it makes a big b12 logo

the late great, Friday, 5 September 2014 23:07 (nine years ago) link

my point was the two IDMs are barely related to each other/cater to completely different audiences. You really think a fan of late-period autechre would be just as into b12/black dog? there's no relation.

brimstead, Friday, 5 September 2014 23:38 (nine years ago) link

the laptop stuff i just call egghead electronica

brimstead, Friday, 5 September 2014 23:38 (nine years ago) link

it has no relation to the dancefloor or clubs.

brimstead, Friday, 5 September 2014 23:39 (nine years ago) link

I don't totally agree. I don't know much regarding late-period autechre, but their own development would show some sort of progression from IDM displaying a strong awareness of the history of electronic dance music to more avant strains. And some of the drill and bass type stuff reflects it's birth in breakbeats no? And on something like the Richard D. James album, you've got some chopped up drill and bass type stuff sitting comfortably next to say Fingerbib, a bit of new wavey detroit techno pop whatever.

Unless someone wants to come up with a bunch of different terms, I'll continue to refer to IDM as what came out on the Artificial Intelligence series and all that other good stuff, some of which was ok for the dancefloor, some not, but in some way showed some derivation from the dancefloor, techno. new wave etc.

dan selzer, Friday, 5 September 2014 23:57 (nine years ago) link

idm in 2014: still arguing about what idm is

Daphnis Celesta, Saturday, 6 September 2014 00:09 (nine years ago) link

yeah, i'll defer to you dan because honestly i started with the artsy fartsy stuff and moved backwards. i guess the strings in fingerbib are pretty detroity but overall it sounds like video game music to me, as does most of that album. again, though, i came in from the internet indie WIRE angle and worked my way backwards so i am a total poseur who really should not be pontificating on these matters lol

brimstead, Saturday, 6 September 2014 01:37 (nine years ago) link

I did the opposite and jumped off around the time all the IDM artists got real pretentious. On one hand, it was IDM which led me directly back to Detroit...typical story of american techno fan listening mostly to UK imports (mostly 808 State) and needing things like the liner notes to Artificial Intelligence to learn about Derrick May. I got deeper into house and techno and electro-funk and disco and wanted more dancefloor, not less. Only more recently have I started moving forward in time from 1994 or so and realizing, maybe I should see what Boards of Canada sound like? And Mike Servito posted an Autechre track on facebook the other day that I really loved, so I get to explore that stuff for the first time now. But like with Aphex Twin, I want a good deal of accessibility/pop/prettiness with my IDM.
