btw, we did 20 polls on the list in the course of 2013. so if that pace continues, we should get up to around the Emo/Scream poll by the end of 2014. not as many polls i'm as interested in participating in this year as there were last year, but excited for Steely Dan and Outkast.

ol' Wrink P's thinkpiece (some dude), Thursday, 2 January 2014 12:34 (ten years ago) link

which means we'd also get to the New Pornographers poll around late 2016 or early 2017 hehe

Anyone know when the Roxy poll starts?

charlie h, Thursday, 2 January 2014 15:01 (ten years ago) link

Oh dang, I traded the official prod for some blue meth over the holidays.

oldbowie (WilliamC), Thursday, 2 January 2014 16:36 (ten years ago) link

I think we should include ETAs of everything in the queue, just to twist the knife a little more.

Matt Groening is MY Cousin (Leee), Thursday, 2 January 2014 17:22 (ten years ago) link

If anyone dies under suspicious circumstances, and the person whose poll it is is implicated in said suspicious circumstances, I'm assuming they don't get to jump ahead in the line.

clemenza, Thursday, 2 January 2014 18:55 (ten years ago) link

I think if Bjork killed Stephin Merritt, starting her poll immediately would be the least we could do.

Where is the Classic Rock Canon poll? Having missed out on a lot of the history of this, I understand why we want to coordinate the timing so's not to have 6 million ballot polls flooding the board at once, but don't it seem like we could have one start at least every week?

Ynysddu is the best policy (but tread Caerphilly) (staggerlee), Thursday, 16 January 2014 17:40 (ten years ago) link

There's a hiatus while the big EOY poll is happening...normal service will return at the start February I guess.

Two days left to vote in the ILM EOY Poll! (seandalai), Thursday, 16 January 2014 17:47 (ten years ago) link

There's a break from these while the end-of-year polls run their course. The list should pick back up in February.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 16 January 2014 17:48 (ten years ago) link

There's a pause during the big end-of-year polls, regular polls will begin again by February.

channel 9's meaty urologist (WilliamC), Thursday, 16 January 2014 18:24 (ten years ago) link

Any reason we can't do one a week starting February?

Ynysddu is the best policy (but tread Caerphilly) (staggerlee), Thursday, 16 January 2014 18:49 (ten years ago) link

Most poll-runners have been leaving the voting open for 10-14 days to flog as many ballots as possible out of ILM. Some overlap is cool -- one poll open for voting while another one is rolling out its results -- but any efforts to put these polls on a timetable have been met with an unspoken "yes that's fine for everyone else but I'm going to run my poll this way." I'm not going to play the heavy -- that's the quickest way for these to grind to a screeching stop, imo.

It's really not too hard if you just throw all the ballots in your recycle bin and make up the results you want to see.

still! it's gonna be a slow burner because it seems like the big genre-spanning polls seem to take longer for people to put together ballots for (as opposed to just looking at one band's discography and quickly being able to ID favorites). so i would say, don't mind my slow progress and just proceed with any single artist polls in the queue, and we can worry about whether results rollouts overlap or anything later if it looks likely.

Algerian Horsebeater (some dude), Thursday, 16 January 2014 21:08 (ten years ago) link

as far as I'm concerned, you could start the discussion thread at any time & it'll be it's own board

\///\/// It's the ILX SUPER SUMMER R.E.M. POLL OF POLLS RESULTS THREAD \///\///

mookieproof, Friday, 19 July 2019 22:53 (four years ago) link

No, that's the REM poll that happened, but not the one that was proposed. I can't remember the details now because it was more than 10 years ago (but someone could look into it, if anyone is remotely bothered), but I think that poll was based on people voting from a limited selection of REM tunes that had been selected from an album-by-album series of traditional ILM polls (i.e. where you can only make one vote for one track). Then I copied the idea and did a Blur poll where people could vote for any track by Blur and then it kickstarted this whole neverending list of artist polls and at some point somebody said 'ah, we should do REM again, but this time you can vote for any track by them'. I think.

the salacious inaudible (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 19 July 2019 23:04 (four years ago) link

XP That REM poll wasn't really a standard ballot poll tho.

I can take over Hendrix.

oh okay

mookieproof, Friday, 19 July 2019 23:13 (four years ago) link

yes, REM needs to be redone because NBS pretty much nailed the reason and that is why they were added to this list.

the Shoegaze/Dream Pop/ Post-rock (Akbums and EPs) will be done but i'm also willing to let someone take over that one if wanted. to tell the truth, i will do New Wave before that one anyways, so i would love it if someone took it over that way it will be done sooner rather than later as i can't see me doing it for at least two years.

Hendrix is yours C. Grisso/McCain

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 23:15 (four years ago) link

yeah and like a quarter of those tracks are interstitial things that are around a minute long

xp

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 23:15 (four years ago) link

I mean fine, do whatever, I wouldn't feel compelled to vote in it

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 23:15 (four years ago) link

Smaller discographies don't necessarily warrant a "Top 50" unless the actual results demand it. For instance, when I ran the Sleater-Kinney poll (a discography which at the time was around 100 tracks), the spread was enough that I had a little more than 50 tracks with enough points=two #1's, which I had set as the floor for ranking.

frustration and wonky passion (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 23:24 (four years ago) link

Total points equivalent to two first-place votes? Oddly enough I now see I cut my last one off at almost exactly that same point (#60 in that case) without consciously applying such a criterion, so that seems intuitively 'right'. There were only ever going to be about 100 real contenders (from ~170) amongst Go-Betweens tracks, but it seemed to work okay.

I cut B&S at #60 as well, but I distinctly remember that being where the number of votes dropped below 10. That was apparently equivalent to ~4 #1s, as the number of votes was freakishly high!

As long as one can cobble together say... a top 30, using similar yardsticks, it may still be worthwhile. Besides, I secretly feel like polls are less about stats than the excuse to listen to and talk about a given artist far, far too much!

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Thursday, 22 August 2019 01:40 (four years ago) link

i did: POLL Will Tear Us Apart – ILM Artist Poll #86 - JOY DIVISION – New Order solo or other groups Poll (aka the Electronic poll) – a NEW ORDER (#37) supplement poll --- Results Thread

even tho there were a fair amount of votes, i don't think the poll was very successful. as far as how many should be counted down? i think it depends on the results, tho i also had set boundaries like at least five votes for most polls. i really couldn't do more than a Top 20 for Joy Division as number 25 only had two votes so i didn't expand.

Bee OK, Thursday, 22 August 2019 02:28 (four years ago) link

Looking closer at the S-K thread, I see I actually used something above 90 points as the floor, with 50th place having 6 votes and 97 points.
