damn was hoping for a Ned thread again this year.

With a tweet suggesting fans "share it like a polaroid picture," the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival sent out this year's highly anticipated lineup late on Wednesday. As previously reported, long-dormant rap duo Outkast will reunite at the Goldenvoice-organized gathering, being held over two weekends April 11-13 and April 18-20 in Indio, Calif.

Outkast will headline on Friday April 11 and 18; Muse on Saturday April 12 and 19; and Arcade Fire on Sunday April 13 and 20. Other major names include Queens of the Stone Age, Beck, Lorde, HAIM, Ellie Goulding, Pet Shop Boys, The Replacements, Skrillex, Calvin Harris, Neutral Milk Hotel, Lana Del Rey, MGMT, and a previously announced set by rock legends Motorhead.

Some of the many fine-print highlights include Solange, ZZ Ward, Blood Orange, AlunaGeorge and John Newman, along with noted veteran acts Dismemberment Plan, Superchunk, Fishbone, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

But the buzz around the Empire Polo Club come April will surely have a lot to do with Andre "Andre 3000" Benjamin and Antwan "Big Boi" Patton, who put their Grammy-winning duo on hiatus in 2007 after scoring hits like "Ms Jackson," "So Fresh, So Clean" and "Hey Ya!".

Over the course of its 14-year run, Coachella has hosted numerous memorable artist reunions, from the Pixies in 2004 to Rage Against The Machine in 2007 to Pavement in 2010. Last year's headliners included the Stone Roses and Blur, who made Coachella's two weekends their only U.S. dates of their recent reunion runs.

Because the Coachella crowd would be the perfect crowd to appreciate "large-scale art installations" (are those two artists well-known? idk).

Murgatroid, Thursday, 9 January 2014 06:02 (ten years ago) link

The Knife is the most interesting thing to me this year. Pet Shop Boys, the Replacements, Neutral Milk Hotel, Beck, the Cult, the Afghan Whigs, Mogwai and Bryan Ferry should also be fun.

If you're counting dates, the more relevant point is that they haven't played live since... the 20th century? Didn't Andre drop out of touring Stankonia?

Day one looks awesome: Outkast, Mats, Knife, Haim, Ferry, Whigs. Nothing else looks remotely interesting in this setting.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 9 January 2014 14:30 (ten years ago) link

I def saw outkast sometime in 2001 when they were on tour for stankonia.. at the shoreline with lauryn hill, the roots, etc. fuckin ridic.

Motorhead!

I love Motorhead, but people always make a big deal about Motorhead even though Motorhead tours all the time, with everyone. And yet few ever go to see Motorhead (maybe because they tour all the time, with everyone). I've seen Motorhead at least three times, once at this place with, like, 100 people and a ton of empty space, once with Megadeth and once at Ozzfest, where the band went on I want to say at 11:30 am. On the way there my friend gave me a Motorhead shirt to throw on, and all day people would flash the devil horns at me, yell "Motorhead!" then ask when they were playing. Um, five hours ago?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 9 January 2014 18:33 (ten years ago) link

Bookman should be headlining.

nickn, Thursday, 9 January 2014 18:42 (ten years ago) link

Motorhead stands out in this setting though. Certainly among the bands with the just-under-the-headliner-sized font.

katherine, Thursday, 9 January 2014 21:06 (ten years ago) link

My anecdotal experience shows that everyone in their late 20s-30s who grew up in Southern California are really only excited by the Toy Dolls being on that bill. Not that any of them will actually go to Coachella, though.

SOLD OUT

Bee OK, Saturday, 11 January 2014 03:48 (ten years ago) link

heard that via KROQ toady, only way to get tickets is to win them.

Bee OK, Saturday, 11 January 2014 03:50 (ten years ago) link

It was pretty much already sold out last year, they just hold onto a bank until the final announcement and then they go like crazy after that.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 11 January 2014 04:20 (ten years ago) link

I really had no idea they'd stopped with the single day tickets. As far as destination fests go, is this one, like, 95% Californians? Because I cannot imagine paying $400 for a weekend pass, $400 for plane tix, scrambling for a place to stay and/or a way to get there and justifying dropping a grand on going to a concert in a field with 90% of the acts either touring nationally or no doubt headlining my own local "destination" festival that I generally skip, anyway.

http://kroq.cbslocal.com/2014/01/14/phil-collins-doesnt-know-what-a-coachella-is/

Phil Collins doesn’t want to play Coachella. Mostly, because he’s not exactly sure what it is.

Since 2011, loyal Collins fans have been petitioning to get their favorite singer on the bill of the Indio, California fest. But at the premiere of the Carole King musical, Beautiful on Sunday night (Jan. 12) the “In the Air Tonight” singer admitted to Vulture that he wasn’t privy of the petition or the festival itself. “I don’t know it,” he told the publication.

After Vulture briefly explained what Coachella is to Collins, the singer said he wasn’t interested in playing the festival anytime soon. But as Justin Bieber so wisely said, never say never.

“If ever I come back and do shows, I’ll be thinking about it, rehearsing for it,” Collins explained. “A festival is not the place to go for my first show after I’ve been out for a while.”

As a Washington resident, the three years I've come down, it's been a mix of great friends joining me, the smorgasbord of acts in a small location, and add'l time spent at Joshua Tree Nat'l Park and Pappy & Harriet's. Well worth the $1500-2000. Lots of good show memories, favorites being Teddybears and Art Brut.

Holy shit, I've been to Coachella and it was a good time but fuck no was it not worth $2000. Then again, I get to see all the bands here, if I want, either touring or often at a whole different (same) festival. But sure, if I lived somewhere where none of these acts play, I can see maybe making a trip out of it. Maybe.

Has anyone ever actually calculated/diagrammed festival overlap, to determine just how many Coachella acts later appear at, say, Lollapalooza?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 April 2014 13:44 (ten years ago) link

Having worked most of them, I wouldn't spend money on attending any beta-rock festival-- with the exception of Primavera. But I've been to Coachella twice and both times I had way more fun there than most festis, especially the first time, where I went from DJ Vivo to Wolf Eyes to upside-down-crucified Peter Murphy in 20 minutes. The traffic is the only bummer about the thing, the PAs are big and loud, the line-up is generally good, it's nice to be in the desert, rentals are generally easy and cool, side shows in Joshua Tree are fun to attend, and Californians are underrated.

Bee OK, Friday, 11 April 2014 15:35 (ten years ago) link

Yep, my $2K high-end guess included extra nights in Santa Monica and Pioneertown, steak dinners, alcohol, cigars, souvenirs, etc, for a long weekend. Just the festival itself, much less.

the bullshit about this if you live in southern california goldenvoice forbids coachella performers from playing anywhere in the region the weeks they're here.. totally blows if you want to see someone performing at the festival but would rather cut your balls off than go
