I liked Kyla La Grange's first album, but it was more guitar-y and singer songwritery than this new single. This is LUSH.

this is nice.

i like the video too. reminds me of cosmic bowling.

That Kyla video make me want to break out the black light from the attic.

In spite of the off-putting bandname:

And other badly named throwback, not entirely sure if it fits this threads remit:

NONONO - "Hungry Eyes"

I have mixed emotions about Nonono...I initially like every song I've heard by them, but I can see myself loathing them in the near future.

Looking forward to this Color War album coming out next month:

Not sure what thread to use to talk about Aussie Courtney Barnett who likes Nirvana and the Go-Betweens

curmudgeon, Friday, 21 February 2014 00:11 (ten years ago) link

bump

curmudgeon, Friday, 21 February 2014 14:57 (ten years ago) link

I'm gonna give her a few more listens. Her DC gig got a nice Washington Post review.

curmudgeon, Saturday, 22 February 2014 16:06 (ten years ago) link

lol I should probably bookmark this thread so I see the new things

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 22 February 2014 16:15 (ten years ago) link

Courtney Barnett just recorded an NPR Tiny Desk concert

curmudgeon, Monday, 24 February 2014 19:20 (ten years ago) link

Courtney Barnett is really cool but isn't she straight-up indie? Whatever indie means.

Legendary Zing! Alum (seandalai), Monday, 24 February 2014 19:27 (ten years ago) link

Probably, but I couldn't find an "Indie 2014" thread and didn't want to be the one to start one, since I'm no indie 2014 expert

curmudgeon, Monday, 24 February 2014 20:29 (ten years ago) link

Regretted playing shambala vigilante border patrol as soon as I posted, but yeah there should be a Rolling Indie 2014 thread.

It's not like I really know what belongs here anyway. Just listened to the Jaakko Eino Kalevi Dreamzone Remixes EP and this track jumped out at me, it's poppy but in a very meandering way:

http://noisey.vice.com/en_se/read/youneedtohearthis-listen-to-this-gorgeous-remix-of-finnish-mastermind-jaakko-eino-kalevi

Legendary Zing! Alum (seandalai), Monday, 24 February 2014 22:20 (ten years ago) link

Even I don't know what belongs here, but if it would feel weird putting it in rolling pop or rolling indie and it seems like something that would appeal to both, then share it here.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 February 2014 22:39 (ten years ago) link

Would the NYC band Skaters belong here? Or what?

You are otm.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 February 2014 06:04 (ten years ago) link

Do the Orwells belong here?

the Orwells obviously sprang from a broad set of guitar-based bands — there were clear whiffs of the Sonics, the Replacements, Guided By Voices and Black Lips wafting across the room

http://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/music/the-orwells-perform-at-u-street-music-hall/2014/03/09/869a06c0-a79f-11e3-8a7b-c1c684e2671f_story.html

curmudgeon, Monday, 10 March 2014 16:43 (ten years ago) link

Not sure how they don't fall squarely into the indie category (no broad brush even necessary).

Johnny Fever, Monday, 10 March 2014 16:49 (ten years ago) link

So you don't want this thread used as an "indie" thread, since there is not a 2014 indie thread (and I don't think every new rock band deserves their own thread)? Maybe I will have to start one

curmudgeon, Monday, 10 March 2014 16:59 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, I don't think anyone ever started an indie thread this year. Might be a good idea to have one?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 10 March 2014 17:09 (ten years ago) link

Yep. I do kind of like the idea of the de facto indie thread being a thread called "not indie" though.

RAC has been doing quality remixes for years. I'm still feeling my way through the album, but the St. Lucia track is def one of the keepers.

New eponymous album, m/f singers, consistently good singles - I can see where many who gave into Paramore last year will dig this.

Kind of reminds me of Metric mixed with something in a Hyundai commercial.

Apologies for not keeping this thread hopping. My usual rabid appetite for digging up new music isn't as rabid as its been in recent years.

kinder, Sunday, 1 June 2014 09:39 (nine years ago) link

Kate Boy has been my next big thing for the past year. They signed to Fiction records, finished the album a week ago, and it should be out later this year. They're probably more inspired by 80s Peter Gabriel or Kate Bush, but given Kate's inflections, end up in the Knife-alike category. I've been planning to carpetbomb a new thread once we have an album release date.

Collabo between Bullion and Laura Groves. "Lay Back" is superb and the melodic hook of "Freedom of the Floor" reminds me of something I haven't been able to place, so I keep listening to it hoping it will jar my memory.

The likes of Lordi and Conchita Wurst make it seem like the largest in-joke in entertainment. Margaret Berger was a guilty pleasure nominee last year who has a good production team on her more recent singles.

There's very definitely a Copenhagen sound, with Saint Cava following in the steps of downtempo Trentemoller, Lulu Rouge, and Mike Sheridan. Nice.
