so no chaos in tejas this year https://www.facebook.com/chaosintejas/posts/635596446475898?stream_ref=10

ok so i know everyone keeps asking but we are very sad to say that 2014 there will be no giant fest like normal. maybe a smaller scaled down thing but even that is up in the air at this point. i always said if i couldn't top the year before then i shouldn't bother and i'm not sure i can top last year at this point. it's been an amazing 9 years and thank you all for everything to make so many dreams come true year after year. we will still be doing shows and like i said maybe a smaller fest or something? lots of records coming out on the label and always stuff our sleeves so we aren't going anywhere but chaos in tejas as you know it won't be it's normal weekend in 2014.

should i just post punk stuff to the other thread now? this is a cool tape from a uk band called endless rope. vocals are hilariously over the top and would be badly paired with the post punk instrumentals except they pull it off http://endlessrope.bandcamp.com/album/negi-surf-demo

flopson, Tuesday, 4 February 2014 00:56 (ten years ago) link

No! (I mean to other thread question!) Glad to see this!

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 7 February 2014 01:54 (ten years ago) link

fuck you, punx

was absent from this threda lst yr, but will ride shotgun in the 14. work won't let me check out the la misma stuff, but will listen in the am. that is all.

CANONICAL artists, etc., etc. (contenderizer), Friday, 7 February 2014 02:09 (ten years ago) link

cool

i didn't really keep up with punk stuff that much either but listened to a bunch of stuff off the termbo list http://www.terminal-boredom.com/2013/rk13.html some gems in there

flopson, Friday, 7 February 2014 02:12 (ten years ago) link

the termbo aesthetic as expressed through their msgboard is consistently gross and offputting but I have no problem with broadly trusting their judgement when it comes to recommendations for contemporary p/n-iu shit

finally listened to Lumpy & The Dumpers like a fortnight ago and am kicking myself for being prissy about their name for the previous 12 months. what a band!

wilful brony (DJ Mencap), Friday, 7 February 2014 10:43 (ten years ago) link

look fwd to checking them out in feb 2015

CANONICAL artists, etc., etc. (contenderizer), Friday, 7 February 2014 10:56 (ten years ago) link

yeah lumpy & the dumpers are the best, i posted about them here iirc. i don't really read the termbo forums but i have always loved Rich's writing. there's just something about it, like a punk scott seward or something. basically the only current underground rock critic voice that doesn't make me cringe. like compared to doug mosurock (barf) or namedropping MRR dweebs who come off as insecure 16 year olds, he just comes off as a normal dude. as far as the aesthetic goes, i guess intentionally dumbed down garage punk will always be behind the curve politically kind of comes with the territory

flopson, Friday, 7 February 2014 15:25 (ten years ago) link

all that is otm I think. I do enjoy their reviews section of like 150 screeds one after the other. Mosurock is... not as self-aware as he could be perhaps

wilful brony (DJ Mencap), Friday, 7 February 2014 15:31 (ten years ago) link

what's the other thread? time travel or w/e? i never got what that was about?

sXe & the banshees (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 7 February 2014 15:32 (ten years ago) link

maybe we can make some sort of omnibus "ILX ALL KINDS OF ROCK MUSIC THREAD EXCEPT NO LAME-ASS INDIE SHIT LIKE THE NATIONAL OR THOSE GARBAGE PARAMORE BANDS THAT ILM POPIST LIKE FOR SOME REASON"

sXe & the banshees (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 7 February 2014 15:34 (ten years ago) link

it's pretty cool that's basically waht it is

flopson, Friday, 7 February 2014 15:35 (ten years ago) link

iirc lj started it but fortunately he doesn't seem to post much stuff on it, mostly edward iii and sarahell posting weird us post-noise underground stuff

flopson, Friday, 7 February 2014 15:37 (ten years ago) link

oh ok i like that! but i never meant for that stuff to nec be excluded from this thread.

sXe & the banshees (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 7 February 2014 18:33 (ten years ago) link

yeah, i didnt really get the point of the thread in the first place either but it's blossomed into something pretty cool

flopson, Friday, 7 February 2014 18:36 (ten years ago) link

eh time travel's just a catch all for stuff that falls between genre cracks or cool bands that don't deserve their own thread or w/e, so much shit I never posted to ILX cuz there wasn't a bucket to put it in, and I've discovered so much cool shit there, like that holly herndon is blowing my mind but I prolly never would've heard it cuz the dance/techno threads always overwhelm me

I'm just gonna use the punk thread for cool meathead stuff like this

One of my coworkers is in a band and he was complaining about the lack of new good, uh, basically non-indie punk/rock bands and I realized that I hadn't been listening to any new bands for a while (I've been in the crate-digging hole for the last six months or so).

So: Recommend me some more new music in the vein of what this thread usually does.

just want to shout out this benefit compilation thingy that someone I know has organised: http://peterkemptheworldisyours.bandcamp.com/releases

didn't know about the dude who inspired it beforehand but his reviews blog is great and the thing it's seeking to benefit seems to be self-evidently good. for the specific purposes of this thread it's also useful in that it's basically a sample of nearly every good p/n-iu band in the UK at the moment (plus some from Europe/Japan/US/Aus)

saw Solid Attitude/STNNNG/Animal Lover last night!

Solid Attitude was great...felt chaotic but was actually super tight...bleating sax all over everything. great energy

STNNNG great as usual

Animal Love...holy living fuck this was the loudest band I've seen since that one 2 man noise thing that dressed up like evil bunnies i can't remember the name

total Am Rep throwback...Guzzard + Hammerhead's volume...really good...

Aw, was asked to be on that comp Mencap posted but we don't have any songs recorded properly.

Do Hysterics count for this thread? Hardcore/punx0r, played here recently and it was FANTASTIC. Mostly female pit, too, which is still a rarity.

http://mladysrecords.bandcamp.com/album/mlr-044-cant-i-live-7-ep

I'm not entirely sure how welcome I am on this thread, tbh, as the line between punk and indie is pretty blurry at the moment, and I wouldn't want to mess up yr purity, you know.

I'm not too cool to admit that the "Shake Appeal" column on Pitchfork's blog has been really useful in finding new punky/garagey stuff I wouldn't know about otherwise. yes v much so bring it on imho

From Tha Crouuuch To Da Palacios (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 20 May 2014 08:11 (nine years ago) link

I wanted to check out Hysterics but I was away the weekend they played in London.

My punk report:

Seems like a lot of decent newish London bands around at the moment - saw a great gig with mix of HC and post-punk bands a few weeks back - I think Die might've been mentioned on the 2013 thread maybe, there was also No which has ex-Shitty Limits guy on drums. The post-punks were Shopping and Ravioli Me Away both were pretty good. Couple of weeks ago saw Los Crudos with Shopping again plus Frau, Dregs and Lowest Form supporting. Bought the Shopping and Lowest Form LPs at that gig. Also the usual old bands coming round again - Chaos UK reformed again, saw them last month with some other oldies supporting - Lunatic Fringe, Coitus, Fleas & Lice (missed them cos I turned up late).

This weekend is ScumFest which is 3 days of hardcore, punk & crust bands and I have a weekend ticket. And then Melt-Banana on Wednesday.

Oh I also went to an Oi! gig a couple of months ago, with the Templars and Last Resort. That was a bit dodgy tbh. I thought with the Templars having 2 black members they might not attract the bonehead types but they have been accused of associating with racists before and sure enough it was full of skins with "greyzone" band t-shirts, and there were people from bands like Close Shave and Pressure 28 in the audience. On the other hand there wasn't any trouble and no-one was sieg-heiling or anything like that.

Talking of which was nice to see this video of the Cockney Rejects playing recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvN3FdZoDDA

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 20 May 2014 10:34 (nine years ago) link

emil.y, Tuesday, 20 May 2014 12:10 (nine years ago) link

Shill? Are you involved with that comp/label?

I bought the Frau demo tape at the Los Crudos show as well. I hate tapes so I will probably never play it again now I've ripped it. Doesn't help that my tape deck is fucked and likes to just stop playing randomly.

I'm a well-wisher, in that I don't wish them any specific harm. Ha. They are friends, and I guess technically my current label? Seeing as they put out my band's demo tape (sorry, yes, an actual tape: http://riotsnotdiets.bandcamp.com/album/slum-of-legs-demo ), a track of mine was on the last comp and they're putting out our debut 7" this summer, I think that would be a reasonable statement to make.

Thanks Emily, ordered.

First night of Static Shock was cool, started off with 3 HC bands - Snob, Strong Boys, Arms Race all pretty good, then Diät and Rakta which were more post-punk. I got confused because they changed the running order, and thought Diät were called Rakta, and bought the Rakta album after Diät's set, so I was really hoping Rakta would be good after spending money on them! I didn't like them as much as Diät tbh but they were pretty good. I just made the last tube home but I'm working from home today so I didn't have to get up too early.

A belated discovery--their most recent release is from 2104--but I'm really digging Vancouver's Needles//Pins:

(Shamebirds, that 2014 record, is prob a good place to start, but for a great bite-size chunk, check out the "Outta This Place"/"Date Night (You Bring the Napalm)" single.

*2014, that is--no need to wait 89 years for their latest.

Their First World Problems EP from 2010 (which isn't on discogs, I think it was a cassette?) was p good but I never followed up on it.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 12 August 2015 15:22 (eight years ago) link
