This sharp bit of afro-pop has cast a spell on me for the past 2 or 3 weeks. The clips from the album due next month are likewise intriguing.
RIYL if you like Santigold or Ebony Bones (but realer?)

Just listened to this today based on JF's recommendation in another thread. Nothing is as obviously brilliant as "Let's Dance" but what a fun album.

actually it is possible i queued future islands to come on after this, both for first-time listens. whew! things make a lot more sense to me now.

I like that the sound of this is hard to pigeonhole. Makes it harder to write about, but more fun to listen to.

it's not THAT hard! i haven't had that experience in a long time—i seriously did not know what i was listening to, kept going for a while despite increasingly implausible sense that the back end of this record was 40 minutes of synthpop, etc.
it wasn't until the ott soul-metal shrieking near the end of future islands that i was suddenly convinced—'this is a different record'.
but i guess both eno williams and the future islands guy have pretty husky voices, i just thought the difference had to do with 'her' singing in english versus ibibio, something like that
