3. The R&B Songs Are Very Good

My Krazy Life's strength is in consistency instead of super-high peaks. Part of the reason for that is because the R&B songs (mentioned above, plus the closer "Sorry Momma") are all very good. Softening up one's sound can be a hurdle for rappers who primarily make street rap, and over the past few years we've seen artists from Yelawolf to Meek Mill struggle with this. But fortunately for YG, L.A. has a few thugged-out R&B singers (TeeFlii, Ty Dolla $ign) who can provide smooth hooks without coming off as jarring or corny. "Me & My Bitch" with Torey Lanez (a Toronto native who works a lot with L.A. artists) accomplishes what T.I.'s "Why You Wanna" did years ago.

the layering on 'me & my bitch' is so sick

fender rhodes, a grand piano patch, curls of john mclaughlin guitar, string stabs, liquid earthquake bass, multitracked self-harmonizing on the chorus, acid synths set off by the 'ch' in 'bitch', big kicks and handclaps and little pinging cascades

Love this album, but 'I Just Wanna Party' is the one that gets stuck in my head, for pretty obvious reasons.

"Bickin Back Bein Bool" and "Meet the Flockers" are my favorites other than "My Nigga"

would halt that stretch after "my nigga" but otherwise otm. the skits in it do nothing for the album's momentum though, and make me wish the songs were longer

it's also annoying because some of the sudden segues are a+, "bpt" into "i just wanna party" and "meet the flockers" into "my nigga" especially

i agree the skits are pointless but if a loose narrative/theme is the price we have to pay for rappers putting some extra thought into the track sequencing etc then i'm ok with that.

agree that 'me & my bitch' is pretty good but it bothers me how bad this tory lanez guy is jacking our terry

the sage album is a fun little thing, YG is on another level tho

sage has no personality, unique style, or story to tell. I feel like noz's bon mot re: the schoolboy q album (which I thought was unfair, as imperfect as that album is) is much more accurately applied to sage's. but like jordan says, a fun little thing.

Oxymoron has at least four outstanding tracks and a lot of the others sound good to me, it might be a tad front loaded and it isn't as good as Habits... but just a rap album-ass rap album is way unfair.

this is one of the rare rap albums where i was really looking forward to one of the slow jams being slid to radio but jeez they really let "who do you love" ride out

yeah it's kinda bullshit that "Who Do You Love" wasn't bigger than it was and that they didn't have the next single right on deck to maintain momentum

i like "Do It To Ya" a lot in the context of the album but it didn't pop the same way when i heard it on the radio the other day, and i don't think anybody should encourage TeeFlii with that corny 'Annie' shit
