Okay can we talk about this dude? Cos he is just THE BEST.

Such a potent mix of baseline turbulence and 2-step friskiness and by turns murderous and carnivalesque hardcore energy, in a manner that evades easy categorisation but has a surplus of vibes in the bank.

okay yes to this

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 13:50 (nine years ago) link

I feel like a lot of contemporary dance producers have embraced soporific drum reverb that sucks the punch out of their tracks so it fills me with all kinds of joy when I hear something that really THUMPS like this

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 13:58 (nine years ago) link

yes this guys a bit special, this is the first one of his i heard. the perfectly timed needle screech sample drew me in. wicked sudden transition between the warpy bassline bit and the 2steppy organ bit nailed it.

PVC's guest mix (in the middle of the set) here is amazing:

https://m.soundcloud.com/intheface/deadbeat-b2b-gash-pvc-guest-mix-in-the-face-sub-fm-show-24-june

So many fabulous compelling exclusive new productions, dude is a genius, esp. the way he suspends vocal hooks within the grooves, it's like they're caught in the middle of a rope obstacle course.

Seriously though can we talk about this tune, it's ridiculous.

Tim F, Sunday, 21 September 2014 06:39 (nine years ago) link

idk i know this is way harsh tai but i kinda feel this guy is an example of how being lavishly talented and maximalist in spirit can go a bit wrong...? like if having limitless power results in your becomimg the chocolate puma of the lame-o marcus nasty student whiteboy basshouse scene then maybe it's time to get some perimeters and parameters on the go

the earlier bits ('she can get it'/ 'you know my man'/ 'our reason') feel a bit tighter to me and far better for it (quite possibly a q contextual mirage i guess), this new one is a hugely enjoyable trip 2 the moon on its own but otherwise its function is obscure if not untempting

r|t|c, Sunday, 21 September 2014 11:19 (nine years ago) link

that purge mix did nothing for me either tbh, just seemed a lot of monotonously unlovely aggro

r|t|c, Sunday, 21 September 2014 11:25 (nine years ago) link

I've heard it in the mix and it does sound "leaner" in that setting (though less lean than e.g. "She Can Get It" obv).

I assume Chocolate Puma were chosen at random, or is there some specific and enlightening nuance to that diss I'm missing?

xpost haha let's just clear the air all at once.

Tim F, Sunday, 21 September 2014 11:29 (nine years ago) link

TBH though I never really know in advance when something is gonna strike me as lame-o student whiteboy / monotonously unlovely aggro and when I'm going to love it; I can't even really defend why the Purge mix works for me.

Tim F, Sunday, 21 September 2014 11:32 (nine years ago) link

acen is actually probably a v good ref pt that my subconscious has dredged up there without telling me

idk i guess i'm reasonably captivated by a lot of monotonous shuffle right now so maybe it's trendy horses for courses

r|t|c, Sunday, 21 September 2014 11:35 (nine years ago) link

ha yeah idk about choc puma either but it felt right... something about unpredictably pulling big chunky fun moves i guess

r|t|c, Sunday, 21 September 2014 11:40 (nine years ago) link

fair to say also that marcus' efforts these last few days for rinse fm's "uk funky takeover" have likely left me irrationally embittered

r|t|c, Sunday, 21 September 2014 11:46 (nine years ago) link

I just avoid marcus' show now, it surprised me to discover that a fair amount of the releases on his label (ugh "bass clinique" - it's like a parody of a record label name simon reynolds would have complained about in 1997) are quite good.

Tim F, Sunday, 21 September 2014 12:21 (nine years ago) link

i mean yeah the 1997 thing is spot on, who is marcus trying to be now like rennie pilgrem or dave tipper or w/e

would that make pvc the nu skool stanton warriors or what idk

r|t|c, Sunday, 21 September 2014 12:28 (nine years ago) link

try and sell that purge mix to me tho, i'm not closing the book just yet

r|t|c, Sunday, 21 September 2014 12:32 (nine years ago) link

my vague and slightly offensive frame of reference for purge and taiko & nulight mixes is that it's the interzone equivalent of the sami koivikko / misc. / areal period of german tech-house, all chunky and spiky like you're trying to digest too-large chunks of grooves. Casting back even further, this stuff is Dom & Roland's Industry, i.e. the magic resides entirely in how it parks itself just on the right side of monotonously unlovely aggro, drawing some kind of energy from the hyper proximity of those barren badlands. That Distro remix of Conducta's "Let Go" I posted in the other thread is even structured like an archetypal bass-house take of D&R's forever-classic "Elektra". But of course the poison pill secret of D&R was that (a) even he went a bit boring at times, even then right in the midst of his largely unacknowledged golden age, and (b) once you zoom out and think of Industry in the context of what it was part of and what came immediately afterwards you'd be like why the fuck would I ever even bother.

Anyway both that Purge mix and my fave Taiki & Nulight mixes are real "walking home from the train station in the dark very purposefully" mix propositions for me, and I have to be careful that I don't start stuttering my steps in time to the music which I'm pretty certain would look idiotic.

Tim F, Sunday, 21 September 2014 13:17 (nine years ago) link

ya i will listen to those again with a clean mindslate cos i certainly recognise that slightly contrary impulse... like idk if u ever checked that archie b shuffle mix i wz boosting a while ago but while it's all tunes in the scene more or less he presents it all as verging on almost-comedically intense doomy atmospheric burial type shit, proper evil glaring glowering pitilessly punishing uber-metalheadz cold booming sepulchral goth-tech that makes u have existential feels about discarded syringes/thesauri etc. absolutely not what i seek from art in general but its self-belief has an ineluctable orbit

https://soundcloud.com/yoshi-p-uk/de-contrenand-on-the-bassline-bully-show-with-yoshi-p-9-9-14

check this guy & his super fun show out! luvvit when the world sets about proving me rong. lil bit mighty moe/heartless, lil bit b-jaxx, lil bit ummm idk kissy sell out? (never paid him enough attention to know for sure tbh but maybe just more in terms of him being a mashup one-off rather than big deal scene leader). in general terms wrt "bass" as amorphous desiring vehicle this is the off the wall big beat revival (nb. brighton-based) og jackin vibe that other basshouse i've heard ignores or perhaps rather keeps closeted (also yes he plays chocolate puma there! so step BACK!)

yoshi's own tune here is a good precis, simple but appealing: https://soundcloud.com/yoshi-p-uk/yoshi-p-mash-up-the-place-rinse-fm-rip

(he also seems to be friendly with nrky and plays his extracurricular bits like 'feel so' and this other one i will be ripping shortly)

r|t|c, Monday, 6 October 2014 12:15 (nine years ago) link

that t&n is ridic! and so (as u said) was 'iaeatd' which probably should have broken out more than it did

i'd guess maybe what stopped it from doing so is also the usp of the stuff you've been selecting which is the ultra hi-tech widescreen scifi hifi audio test music vibe which eschews a regular kinda swing for something more abstract and stilted/zombified freaky

r|t|c, Monday, 6 October 2014 12:23 (nine years ago) link

uh yeah this nocturnal tune is my shit

Tim F, Monday, 6 October 2014 12:31 (nine years ago) link

xpost yeah I get you on that, I think though that the sonic fetishisation of an aesthetic that remains so plasticky and aspirational-glamour and non-deep means that even these ~studio wizardry~ latterday efforts avoid some of the dead-on-arrival desiccated butterfly under glass feel that characterised future garage from the moment it was invented. Probably not for long, but for a little while.

Tim F, Monday, 6 October 2014 12:34 (nine years ago) link

xp ha jamie george tbf

as soon as i think "fuck no" i'm already dling the most recent one juuuuust to be sure :(

r|t|c, Monday, 6 October 2014 12:40 (nine years ago) link

otoh thinking back to shuffle tech i'm feeling there's a slight tension (possibly even a looming rupture) between today's g-house ruffneck rude and the more austere prowling scifi headspace dub of the earlier matt fear/majesty/playtime wave, and i'm def still more on the side of the latter atm so i'm not being entirely true

r|t|c, Monday, 6 October 2014 12:48 (nine years ago) link

BTW I did go back and listen to the Archie B set again - it does have that grim vibe but so much confidence in its sound-as-a-genre that even if I wasn't feeling it - which of course I do - I don't think I'd ever be minded to question the selector-judgment at work.

Whereas with this stuff it's almost like for me the charm can be that it's skating so close to going bad? In that sense - though obv not in sound or aesthetic preoccupation or anything else really - it reminds me of broken beat where I never knew in advance whether I was gonna love something or loathe it.

Tim F, Monday, 6 October 2014 12:48 (nine years ago) link

can I be the anti-lex and ask for a dj set recommends in respect of today's g-house ruff neck rude?

it's not quite as simple as bigbeat "rap sample &" tho, more like the phasing from ascetic grooves to a general tough linearity

r|t|c, Friday, 10 October 2014 10:16 (nine years ago) link

"Ey Yo" is marvellous.

The grooves on this stuff feel more Chicago house to me than other deep tech - though we're splitting hairs a bit here obv. Or maybe not so much Chicago house itself as a collective dream of Chicago house - strip off the raps (or not!) and these would be DJ T set fillers circa 2005.

Tim F, Friday, 10 October 2014 11:17 (nine years ago) link

Haha I missed the second last post, i meant recommendation of DJ sets to listen to, not recommendations for a DJ set (the closest thing I get to a DJ set these days is queuing up Londonbeat at parties).

Anyway I came back to say that this show is excellent:

https://soundcloud.com/yoshi-p-uk/de-contrenand-on-the-bassline-bully-show-with-yoshi-p-9-9-14

check this guy & his super fun show out! luvvit when the world sets about proving me rong. lil bit mighty moe/heartless, lil bit b-jaxx, lil bit ummm idk kissy sell out? (never paid him enough attention to know for sure tbh but maybe just more in terms of him being a mashup one-off rather than big deal scene leader). in general terms wrt "bass" as amorphous desiring vehicle this is the off the wall big beat revival (nb. brighton-based) og jackin vibe that other basshouse i've heard ignores or perhaps rather keeps closeted (also yes he plays chocolate puma there! so step BACK!)

De Contrebande's guest mix re-alerts me to the existence of My Nu Leng's "Masterplan", sounds so amazing rounding out the set here.

Tim F, Thursday, 16 October 2014 15:16 (nine years ago) link

I read a soundcloud comment that described my nu leng as the "neurofunk of house'n'bass" (how ugly a phrase this must look to any outsider), which felt like it chimed in with my Dom & Roland reference upstairs. Maybe MNL are bass's Source Direct (see also "Knowing" on this tip).

Tim F, Thursday, 16 October 2014 15:22 (nine years ago) link

(speaking of which D&R seems to be killing it again, but that's a whole 'nother story)

Tim F, Thursday, 16 October 2014 15:45 (nine years ago) link

xp yeah defo... this doesnt exist for no reason (and to that end feels more like solution than novelty)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RW5Y-1jslw

'sleepless' is another good one, unmistakable ed rush & optical sfx (lol idk why u keep going for all the high-end concept neurofunk)

perhaps uncharitably i even tend to think they often qualify as n-funk per se more thru context and sympathetic remixing, as some of their unadorned bits are actually among the most funkless in the scene and therefore nudge them further down the timeline to pendulum-style moody bedroom headbangers by proxy (instro grime obv also has a part to play in that)

also reminded of kidnap kid saying his first cd was pendulum... heh this could easily now spin off into looking at the parallel shadowline dnb has been drawing alongside the rise of bass both pop and underground

r|t|c, Thursday, 16 October 2014 16:04 (nine years ago) link

ooh while i remember i might as well take this opportunity to shout out the monstrous chris lorenzo mix of "you've been gone" tho... near as you'll ever get to a perfect uncanny horror audio recreation of the skeletons bit in jason & the argonauts

r|t|c, Thursday, 16 October 2014 16:09 (nine years ago) link

Well yeah "Knowing" and "Sleepless" are def. more Ed Rush & Optical (as is a lot of DIstro material), "Masterplan" has got more of that ruptured drum kit vibe though. They seem very inconsistent though.

LOVE the Lorenzo remix but that almost goes without saying.
