Me too, tbh

After loving Kaputt to pieces I realized I had no use for Bejar's New Porno songs because I hate how the arrangements force him to bark and sneer in that pinched, arch voice. Ugh.

two weeks pass...

if Neko Case sings lead on "Champions of Red Wine" my heart will surely melt

― bernard snowy, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 19:06 (1 month ago)

she does!

"dancehall domine" is a carl/kathryn joint, not a bejar as previously suspected, but it totally slays.

only a couple of listens in but i am liking this. it's a lot of fun.

borntohula, Friday, 8 August 2014 20:57 (nine years ago) link

borntohula, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 04:01 (nine years ago) link

thanks!

the new record is somewhat disappointing.

production too mellow. need more sharpness and energy (wish the whole thing was more like the first song..)

nostormo, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 21:22 (nine years ago) link

nice interview!

nostormo, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 21:31 (nine years ago) link

Bjar and Amber Webber (Lightning Dust) sound amazing together on "Born With a Sound." (As usual of late, the Bejar tracks are best.)

Simon H., Thursday, 21 August 2014 01:34 (nine years ago) link

Which tracks star Neko?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 21 August 2014 01:52 (nine years ago) link

"Champions of Red Wine" (which is great) and "Marching Orders" (which is forgettable).

Simon H., Thursday, 21 August 2014 03:47 (nine years ago) link

this is great, it's cool i can now pretend together never happened

call all destroyer, Friday, 22 August 2014 14:23 (nine years ago) link

"Born With a Sound" is great! Will have to check out Amber Webber.

Always nice to hear NPs, such great songwriters and singers all of them, it's maybe kind of like how Tarantino describes Rio Bravo as a hang-out movie because you feel like you're friends with the main characters and when you see it you get to hang out with them again, when there's a new NP record you get to hang out with them again

niels, Friday, 22 August 2014 15:59 (nine years ago) link

I used to like Newman but now I think he should retire from the band he created.

nostormo, Friday, 22 August 2014 16:31 (nine years ago) link

niels, check out Lightning Dust's Infinite Light. great great record.

Simon H., Friday, 22 August 2014 16:42 (nine years ago) link

Webber is also in Black Mountain, and they're excellent if you like proggy hard rock. Haven't kept up w/ them lately, but their In the Future record is pretty perfect. her voice is very prominent on that one.

borntohula, Saturday, 23 August 2014 20:48 (nine years ago) link

aah that makes a lot of sense, was quite into Black Mountain for a while, remember preferring eponymous album but would like to revisit Future. Saw them live in 2008 but remember it as kind of weird and spacey and then I tuned out.

My local library doesn't have Infinite Light but just ordered the Fantasy cd, hope it's good too.

Spidyr sounds like an out take from Kaputt

(untill the bombastic ending that is)

nostormo, Monday, 25 August 2014 12:30 (nine years ago) link

and You Tell Mt Where sounds like a Game Theory song, as Newman said himself.

nostormo, Monday, 25 August 2014 12:37 (nine years ago) link

Spidyr is also a Swan Lake cover.

MarkoP, Monday, 25 August 2014 14:28 (nine years ago) link

$8.99 this week only at Best Buy.

No that's the Traveling Wilburys

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Tuesday, 26 August 2014 04:42 (nine years ago) link

That time Jenny Lewis covered "Handle With Care" with fucking Ben Gibbard, Conor Oberst and M. Ward is likely a better candidate.

Letterman performance of title track. Looks like Kelly Hogan is becoming a touring New Pornographer thanks to Neko.

That's not Kelly Hogan that's Coco from the Ettes

You're Coco from the Ettes.

Welcome to my spooooooky carnival! Hope I don't... blow your mind! (Phil D.), Thursday, 4 September 2014 16:40 (nine years ago) link

Ha was just coming here to say I didn't realize Coco was in the live version of the band.

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 4 September 2014 17:07 (nine years ago) link

Love all the crazy backing vox on this album.

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 4 September 2014 17:08 (nine years ago) link

I know salivating over the Bejar songs is the cool thing to do but all my fave tracks on here are Newman songs. "Dancehall Domine" "Brill Bruisers" "Wide Eyes" "Backstairs" "Fantasy Fools" are all pretty great.

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 4 September 2014 17:43 (nine years ago) link

I hung out with Coco in Nashville one night because she's a friend of a friend. If you ever get the chance, I recommend it. Her default level of enthusiasm for life is 11.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 September 2014 17:46 (nine years ago) link

xp Champions of Red Wine is better than the entirety of Neko's last album

Welcome to my spooooooky carnival! Hope I don't... blow your mind! (Phil D.), Thursday, 4 September 2014 18:46 (nine years ago) link

My old band opened for the Ettes a long time ago and they all seemed like delightful people.
