Loosened the laces and starting to feel ok

trivia opinion question: what would you say is the "timeless and relatable shoe"

it's a new day in the international landscape (z_tbd), Monday, 13 March 2023 17:26 (one year ago) link

by that i mean what do you think society at large would say is the timeless and relatable shoe

it's a new day in the international landscape (z_tbd), Monday, 13 March 2023 17:27 (one year ago) link

as far as sneakers go thats gotta be the famous chuck taylors

lag∞n, Monday, 13 March 2023 17:30 (one year ago) link

ok, that definitely seems right. but what about the pantheon of about 3 to 5 timeless and relatable shoes

it's a new day in the international landscape (z_tbd), Monday, 13 March 2023 17:31 (one year ago) link

the black and white adidas ones with the stripes. but there's another one though

sambas? idk, stan smiths are maybe more relatable, nike dunks are in the mix

lag∞n, Monday, 13 March 2023 17:35 (one year ago) link

and of course vans have a few models in the running

lag∞n, Monday, 13 March 2023 17:37 (one year ago) link

these are all correct, i think. but in addition, the NB 574 is a timeless and relatable shoe.

Ohtani will be the first athlete to sport a cleated version of the NB 574, the most recognizable and prolific shoe the company has ever released. Even if you aren’t too familiar with sneaker culture, you’ve probably seen the 574s at some point, or even owned a pair yourself. The beauty of the shoe is its ability to appeal to many different kinds of people. There are standard colorways meant for the everyday folk, and rarer colorways targeted at sneakerhead purists. JD Sports’ historical overview of the 574 does it more justice than I can, but what you need to know is that the shoe has been around for more than four decades and was (and is) most dominant in the United States and Japan. It put a stamp on lifestyle fashion culture around the mid-90s — about the same time as Griffey’s entry into the sneaker market and in the middle of Jordan’s stronghold. Much of that meteoric rise can be directly traced to Jordan, who helped all shoe brands rise, but New Balance also deserves credit for putting out such a timeless and relatable shoe.

As part of his new deal with New Balance, Shohei Ohtani will become the first to wear a cleat version of the NB 574. pic.twitter.com/mGX1t8NOeF

i love new balance but i think theyre a lil too niche a lot of people dont relate to them theyre weirdly controversial for an frumpy gray shoe

lag∞n, Monday, 13 March 2023 17:47 (one year ago) link

that’s pretty cool re ohtani

yeah i would say low dunks and/or AF1s have graduated to this category now

Tracer Hand, Monday, 13 March 2023 17:49 (one year ago) link

i think its gotta be dunks af1s are too stylish to be universal

I like the green except for the puffiness. Voting blue.

This thread inspired me to get a pair of the Saucony jazz in green/light green. They are intensely bright, I love them.

Those are excellent :)

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 08:49 (nine months ago) link

I like those a lot. Never considered Saucony. They look very much like summer trainers though - I take it they're not particularly waterproof?

they are not

suicoke is like visvim, really good choice if you are a small japanese person who owns an art gallery and has $$$$$

the late great, Thursday, 17 August 2023 00:14 (eight months ago) link

as someone who is taller than 6’ and dresses “more masculine / less cute” than yr average japanese fashion person i find suicoke / visvim stuff looks not quite right on my feet, the proportions get messed up as your feet get bigger slowly and your legs get longer

instead i got birkenstock kyoto, similarly for visvims i buy non japanese shoes of similar qualities, like sebago boat shoes or quoddy mocs etc. actually if you look at the footwear collabs western workwear brands like engineered garments do they hit that vibe but more tailored for western body proportions

if you have size 6-9 feet you can comfortably ignore my advice i think

the late great, Thursday, 17 August 2023 00:19 (eight months ago) link

i meant to say your legs get longer faster than your feet get bigger, so not only do things like visvim FBTs start to look silly as your feet get longer (by turning even more into pointy genie shoes) they look even sillier because size 12 fbts on a 6’ or taller person somehow end up daintier looking than they do as size 7s on a 5’ tall person

having lustful feelings about various colourful Flower Mountain models, though i rarely move far from a few variants of black canvas sneakers

ionjusit (P. Flick), Thursday, 17 August 2023 14:12 (eight months ago) link

oh yeah 100% i was actually looking at their universal work collaboration awhile back, ultimately passed because they look pretty fragile, but good example of what i meant by "footwear collabs *by) western workwear brands"

https://currently.att.yahoo.com/att/universal-works-x-flower-mountain-113953667.html

i believe there is a 2023 collaboration currently going on too

if i can find a new pair for $100 …
